Cold plunging is a regular part of my routine (off days too)
Aside from benefits shown in real data, I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t feel like it was worth it- I’m also a big empirical evidence person. However, there’s lots of mixed info out there. Here’s what to know:
Cold plunging has tangible and measurable health benefits, but some of it varies based upon WHEN you cold plunge.
The most well established research on the subject suggests that the best time to cold plunge is in the morning (ideal for your circadian rhythm), but it’s also not the ONLY time you can benefit. Studies show various benefits of cold exposure anytime during in the day: it can elevate dopamine levels by up to 250%, enhancing mood, focus, and motivation for hours. Preworkout, it acts as a powerful catalyst that stimulates your sympathetic nervous system in ways that caffeine can’t. Just make sure you warmup thoroughly after!
Cold water immersion also activates brown fat (improves thermogenesis, insulin sensitivity, and other metabolic functions) supports metabolism, and helps regulate your circadian rhythm.
Long story short, do it EARLIER in the day if possible, BEFORE you workout, or on recovery days.
Contrary to popular opinion, DO NOT do it within a few hours after working out (I never do it after working out in general). Most of the data available on the subject shows that cold plunging post-workout can actually have some negative affects; including a blunted hypertrophy response after strength training.
Cold exposure might be “trendy” but it’s also backed by real science❄️🧠💪

I like feeling fit, but I love feeling fast 💨
Apples and oranges, but if it’s left up to me, I’d rather sprint on the beach than jog on concrete.
Obviously, cardiovascular endurance is crucial for health longevity overall, but these days I tend to bias my training more towards anaerobic stuff vs aerobic stuff…As long as I’m getting 10k steps per day I’m ok with not doing long bouts of aerobic exercise.
Also, as a dad my days with fast twitch muscle are numbered so I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts 😂

The road to 5,000 lunges🧱
After I submitted a formal application, @guinnessworldrecords specified that in order to make anything official I need:
✅ 2 witnesses present for the entire duration of the record attempt (one of them a credentialed trainer / fitness professional…they cannot do shifts longer than 4 continuous hours)
✅ 2 simultaneous camera angles filming every lunge performed (one from the front and one from the side)
✅ a clearly visible rep counter alongside me
✅ repetition logs for every set of lunges from both witnesses
✅ correct technique and form throughout (no hands touching the thighs etc)
How many you think I can do in 24 hours? We’ll find out in a few weeks…
