Today, on my 40th birthday, I’d like to share a poem I wrote the week of my wedding. It is has never rang more true than it does for me today… ‘Here’ I was so broken and so far away from who and what I wanted. That one arbitrary day I put my head down and I just started working. I worked I worked I worked I worked And then one day Many years later I looked up at myself in the mirror… And I was older. I was tired I was worn. My hair corse and grey. My skin, weathered and lined. The surprise of it… made me pause… I questioned, Why am I so tired? Why am I so visibly worn? For I should be happy. I tell myself that I am at peace. And it was in this moment that I realized I am here. The goals that I once set for myself. The expectations. The desires. The dreams. They are all here. That VOICE that is inside of me, that day, after day, after DAY, tells me to keep pushing… To keep grinding It is the voice that got me here. (Exhale) But it is no longer the voice that is needed. I pause. Because I know, that without that voice, I would be nothing. I would be ashes in the wind. So I thank that voice. And I see in this moment for the very first time just how powerful that voice truly is… So powerful, that I have been unable to separate it from myself. It has been in my ears. In my eyes. In my bones. I SEE now, just how deeply challenging it is going to be to silence that voice. But like a coat of armor after a war… It is no longer needed I have arrived The war is over. I am back home. With all that I ever wanted. It is time to let this old friend go. Thank you voice, for giving me all that I ever dreamed of. Thank you. Now… I wish to rest. I am tired. I will try to enjoy the spoils of which you have gave me. I pray that I might. Voice! No one will ever truly know or appreciate all that you did for me. All that you gave me to get me here. I hope that I do not forget you. But if I do, know that it is all in thanks to you I love you.
