#UofT student Stephen Gogolev ⛸️ had a solid excuse for missing his midterms: there were no makeups for the Olympics.

As Canada’s lone representative in men’s singles at the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, Gogolev reached an elite athletic milestone & capped a comeback from back problems that nearly derailed his skating career.

After winning national championships & securing an Olympic berth, the St. Michael’s College student set his sights on gold at Milano Cortina, joining several members of the U of T community competing in Italy.

Read more about Stephen’s journey as a U of T student representing Team Canada 🍁 at the Milano Cortina Olympic Games at the link in bio. We’re cheering you on, Stephen! 🙌

Watch our new #HeritageMinute on Bora Laskin, the first Jewish Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Laskin’s legacy is brought to life by the iconic Victor Garber.

Bora Laskin was born on 5 October 1912 in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario. He was a graduate of the University of Toronto and of Harvard Law School. Although he excelled in his studies, Laskin struggled to find work once he was called to the bar, possibly due to the rampant antisemitism in Toronto at the time. In 1940, he was able to obtain employment teaching law at the University of Toronto. His notable academic work earned him an appointment to the Ontario Court of Appeal in 1965. In 1970, Laskin was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, and three years later he was named Chief Justice. Known as “the Great Dissenter,” he often disagreed with his more conservative peers. His decisions helped shape what would become the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982. Bora Laskin was known as an innovative educator and the first academic on the Supreme Court, whose extensive career included many notable cases.

This Heritage Minute was made possible thanks to funding from Canadian Heritage, and Norton Rose Fulbright, with in-kind support from Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV.

A massive thank-you to producer Mike Masters (Accomplice Content), as well as our consultants, cast, and crew!
