Before jumping in to help, try asking one simple question: do you want to be helped, hugged, or heard? People know the answer immediately, and it changes everything about how you show up for them.

Super communicators ask 10 to 20 times more questions than the average person, and most of them are simple. The real skill is asking questions that invite people to talk about what they actually care about, and then genuinely listening to the answer.

Most of us think we laugh because something is funny. But 80% of the time, laughter has nothing to do with humor. It's how we tell someone we want to connect with them.

I see this all the time: we reach for stickers, dollars, rewards... and then feel confused when nothing really sticks.

Here’s the reframe that changes everything: what shapes behavior long-term isn’t transactions - it’s connection. Feeling seen. Feeling valued. Feeling like, “My parent really knows who I’m becoming.”

That kind of reward lands in a child’s nervous system. And once it lands there, it lasts.

If this made you pause, or rethink how you motivate your child, my full conversation with @charlesduhigg is now out on the Good Inside Podcast. Comment PODCAST and I’ll send you a link to the full episode! 🎧

One problem with AI? It messes with the signals that we've developed, over centuries, to figure out what we ought to pay attention to, and what we can safely ignore. Thanks @FindingMastery for having me on the show!

When limits come from frustration, kids feel like the problem. When limits come from protection, kids feel cared for - even if they don’t like the decision. And that distinction matters more than we think.

In my talk Charles Duhigg on the Good Inside Podcast, we talk about how better cues, named rewards, and repair over punishment don’t just change behavior - they lower tension and build real connection at home. With our kids. With our partners. And with ourselves.

This episode is for anyone who wants to communicate more clearly, and finally make change stick. Comment PODCAST and I'll send you a link to listen to the full episode!

Great communicators don’t guess what people need they clarify it by asking whether someone wants help, empathy, or just to be heard before responding. This simple shift prevents miscommunication and instantly aligns the conversation so people feel understood instead of misunderstood or interrupted.

Friendship takes more hours than we think but fewer heroics. Assume they like you, reach out even when it feels awkward, and when they share good news, actually celebrate it.

Want to know how to instantly connect with anyone? It’s easier than you might think. learn the answer in the new video by @CharlesDuhigg animated by @afterskool100

Communication is a superpower and the best communicators understand that whenever we speak, we’re actually participating in one of three conversations: practical (What’s this really about?), emotional (How do we feel?), and social (Who are we?). If you don’t know what kind of conversation you’re having, you’re unlikely to connect. The good news is that communication is a science, and, with the right guidance, anyone can learn to master the skills needed to connect.

This video is based on the research from Charles Duhigg’s latest book, Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection – a fascinating guide to what makes conversations work and how we can all learn to be supercommunicators at work and in life.

Head over to After Skool to check it out!

Vulnerability isn’t oversharing or emotional dumping it’s the moment you share something that another person could judge and risk being seen anyway. Neuroscience shows that trust, persuasion, and deeper connection are built when vulnerability is met with curiosity instead of judgment making vulnerability the foundation of meaningful communication.

Super communicators don't have a special gift — they just think half an inch deeper and make it clear they actually want to connect with you. I'm not trying to convince you of anything or prove how smart I am, I just want you to walk away from every conversation feeling genuinely understood. That's it. That's the whole secret.

The people who match your energy aren't just being polite. They're showing you they actually want to connect, and that turns out to be one of the best predictors of emotional intelligence there is.

Super communicators don’t just talk better, they listen differently. They ask more questions, actively proving they’re listening through follow ups, and reflecting understanding back in real time. They also recognize the type of conversation happening and adapt whether it’s practical, emotional, or social so the other person feels truly understood instead of just heard.

The simplest way to make someone feel heard is also the most underused. Ask them why, reflect back what you heard, and then ask if you got it right. Most people never make it to that third step.

Laughter is less about what's funny and more about what's human. Most of the time we laugh, we're not responding to a joke, we're telling someone we want to connect with them.

When someone says something that gets under your skin, the most effective response isn't a counterargument. Ask them why it matters so much, and they'll stop defending a position and start telling you who they are. That's when real conversation becomes possible.
