Yesterday the news was broken that a Black trans man known as Danny Dusse was found deceased after days of friends and family searching from him. His jeep had been found abandoned, prompting the search.

The details surrounding his death are unknown currently. Sending my sincerest condolences to his friends and family. 💔

@blue.kansan is raising funds to help trans Kansans. Jae is a well-respected trans person and a friend of mine, and the first trans Kansan to go to the Democratic National Convention to choose our presidential candidates. Whatever organizing Jae does, I stand behind.

@transjoykc Is a fantastic trans led and run nonprofit that you can also donate to.

Not pictured: many, many more people I have known and loved during my time in Kansas City.

Lesson learned. There are so many nurses in my personal life who I love, and I have immense respect for what they do. I’ll never know for sure if that’s what I think happening was indeed happening. It was a feeling I got. From where I grew up, I’m well aware most people know it’s socially unacceptable to say outwardly racist things. So they are covertly racist instead. Either way, she did a great job and people deserve to be recognized for such things.
.
Do you think I overreacted or do you think it was justified?

I’m a strong believer that the hourly jobs I’ve worked outside of medicine will serve only to make me a better doctor, more empathetic to my patients’ experiences, and above all, a better advocate for healthcare access.

Love of my life
From the experiences I’ve had, I empathize deeply with other trans people walking into a doctor’s office, concerned people won’t understand what they’re asking for or what they need. Listening and finally being able to be the person to give them the nonjudge mental and personally understood care I did today felt fantastic. To me, a staunch atheist since childhood, it feels almost sacred. To see someone in that way we so rarely feel seen and understood. To alleviate their worries that I don’t believe them or think what they were asking for is valid, true, and medically necessary. I look forward to a lifetime of walking with many more of my trans siblings in this way. And providing exactly the care that I have needed and that so many people I love need.

46 is now requiring all trans people be registered with sex assigned at birth. This is a gross misrepresentation of middle school-level biology being paraded as medical fact.

Good trans news update August 2925

NYC opened its first trans shelter for the unhoused.

A U.S. District Court in Maryland blocked the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from terminating grants that fund research on sexual and gender minority health. This decision prevented the cancellation of millions of dollars in federal funding for health research, including studies focused on LGBTQI+ communities.

More than a dozen states filed a lawsuit to protect access to gender-affirming care from federal investigations by the regime.

In Australia, transgender soccer player, Riley Dennis won a legal case against anti-trans activist Kirralie Smith. This victory pushes back against efforts to exclude trans athletes from sports

A major new research effort was announced in the U.K. to track the health and well-being of thousands of transgender and gender nonconforming youth. The $14 million study aims to better understand their physical, mental, and social health to improve services.

Illinois launched a legal hotline for LGBTQ+ residents.

The Williams Institute at UCLA released an August 2025 study update estimating that just over 2.8 million USians aged 13 and over identify as transgender. This increased visibility and accurate data can inform policies and resources. And even at that number, we’re still less than 1% of the total population in the US.

The fact that increasingly young people are identifying as being trans means that they have grown up in the world that recognize them for who they are and was supportive. They are not going to want to go back to something else. They will continue to fight for the right to live authentically.

It’s been a minute, and residency is hard, but I’m still kicking. As per usual, perspective, viewing things in a healthy and productive way, and trying to center myself to focus on that which I can control, have all been vital to decreasing stress in residency (and maintaining my sanity).

There are so many things in life we can’t control. Many people feel very overwhelmed right now. That’s understandable. There is a lot that’s out of our hands. A lot of uncertainty. A lot of fear. A lot of unjust actions we’re witnessing around the country and the world.

It’s hard because no matter how much we may want to help, so many of these things are slow processes that take time, power, and massive organizing to have an impact on. I think we can all play some role and should continue fighting. We should never give up or give in. I think many people often find themselves wondering— What can the average caring person do? That is a difficult question to grapple with. We are small, and the problems are large. But I hope that we can continue to fight and find our way out of the mess we’re in.

All of this being said, I’m increasingly trying to focus on that which I can control. And to see how I can help me help myself as I navigate residency, and the general high stress levels from being a [transgender] human in the world right now.

I’m challenging myself more to try and have a positive mindset and make the best of things where I can to shape what I can about my reality. This is my take away regarding that today.

How about we focus on facts and truth. How about we listen to actual science and peer-reviewed research. How about we don’t listen to people with zero medical training. How about we protect babies.

Lying about the safety of common medications used during pregnancy does exactly the opposite.

Why I choose to be out and open about being trans and why I’m not stealth.
.
Tried it, hated it. Not my thing. Initially it was more of a safety concern but shame also played a huge role. As I came into my own I reconnected to the community and have been happier that way. Some people view transition as a thing to overcome and don’t really want to be very involved or know other trans people beyond that. To me transness and transitioning is all a part of a journey and is integral to who I am. I don’t view it as a barrier or something to overcome. It has certainly had its challenges; but as a whole it’s added much more to my life in the grand scheme of things.

For me, being tuned into the community and having lots of trans friends has always been how I’m happiest. Having people who understand your experience and the feeling of just being fully me without feeling I need to hide anything has been freeing. I understand stealth means safety for many people and there is no shame in that whatsoever. Again—I’ve been there. But at this point in my life being out brings me more joy and I plan to be out for the rest of my life.
.
I get messages regularly from people thanking me for being so out, and that serves as further reminder for exactly what I experienced. That trans visibility made me feel so much less alone and so much more hopeful early on. And I want to be that person for others.

Love y’all.
As I take in this landscape, I’m reminded how fleeting life is. I’ve never liked creed or doctrine, nor humanity’s endless attempts to enforce belief on belief. We’re all human, with different stories and perspectives that make life beautiful.

Our lives are one moment in time of the sights these mountains have seen. A drop in the ocean. One day we’ll look back old and grey, hoping we lived well. What could be more important than helping others live well too? What’s more sacred than kindness? Forget doctrine and dogma. Forget mad rulers who point to difference and call it danger.

See the person before you. They may look different than you, speak a language you don’t, sing a song foreign to your ear. Yet, they’re you. We’re all human. In the end, we can be judged by one thing: kindness. The moments we made another’s burden lighter, the chances we missed doing so. No title, no faith, no ideology defines us more than this.

Are you kind? Is your vote kind? Do you choose comfort over compassion, wealth over welfare, self-interest over protecting the vulnerable? Do you hide behind ancient texts or echo chambers, telling yourself that cruelty is conviction? Are you kind?

When we leave this earth, the birds will still sing, the wind won’t remember our names. We’re small. But our kindness, our impact on one another can be immense.

Once more, Are you kind?
