Every September 30th, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Survivors, families, and all those impacted by residential schools—and remember the Indigenous children who never made it home. 🧡
But true reconciliation calls for more than reflection. One powerful way to take action is by supporting the Indigenous Peoples’ Solidarity Fund with @canadahelps. Curated by Wanda Brascoupé, it unites over 50 Indigenous-led registered charities creating healing and lasting change.

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. 🦅❤️✨🙏🏽
We already know the statistics;
we are 12x more likely to go missing.
Less likely to have our stories shared.
More likely to experience violence on our own lands.
And yet, we are so much more than a statistic. ❤️✨🦅
We are life givers, matriarchs, water and land protectors. We are represented within the bowl of a pipe - acknowledging the balance of masculine and feminine. We represent that sacred fire within the center of a tipi. We are guided by Grandmother Moon + our values are connected to Mother Earth. 🌕🌎
Our reflection is found within the waters - nipiy - we are that sacred connection to life itself.
And yet, a lot of parallel violations have happened to Indigenous women the same time we started harming the Earth and the Waters.
So I believe that parallel healing also has to happen because is not just an Indigenous issue, this is a systemic and a human rights one.
We deserve to feel safe in our own homelands. We deserve to grow old. To love and be loved. To access safe, culturally grounded wellness spaces. To find sisterhood within each other. ❤️🦅✨
So today - and every day,
say their names. demand justice. do not stay silent.

I’m so grateful to have been trusted to lead a yoga session with 44 powerful women who are making waves in the health and wellness space here in Vancouver.

They say a nêhiyaw (Cree) child is born with many gifts.
The gift of our language (nêhiyawêwin), of life (pimâtisiwin), and of our livelihood (pimâcihowin). 💕🌸✨🌊⛰️🌳
The word nêhiyaw in my language translates to a “four-bodied person,” representing the four aspects of our well-being: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Which makeup the foundations of the medicine wheel. The medicine wheel is a circle that represents the interconnectedness of everything and everyone. ⭕️
That circle is divided into four sections. To find balance and harmony in our lives, we must first find that reflection within our medicine wheel , within ourselves.
For me, right now, that looks like trusting in Creator + trusting in my dreams and visions + learning my language because our language carries a spirit.
It opens a doorway that helps dismantle the limited and fragmented ways I’ve come to see the world through English alone.
As I learn more of my language, I begin to see and move through life with a more relational worldview. And through that, I cultivate deeper relationships with everything around me that are rooted in respect and reciprocity.
Whenever I second-guess myself or feel fragmented, I pray in my language and say my nèhiyawi-wihowin (spirit name). It grounds me in my identity and reminds me where I come from and that name reminds me of my responsibility in the world.
Knowing my identity as an Indigenous person gives me a foundation to build from. Every tool, modality, and teaching I learn can grow from there, but without that, there is no solid ground.
Setting that foundation is like anchoring into the teachings of the medicine wheel- realizing it acts as an internal compass.
It reminds me that I am not alone, and that everything in my life- whether a lesson or an expansion - is here to teach me.
Through knowing my culture, my language, and my identity, I carry a sense of purpose that allows me to trust in everything sent my way. 🌞✨🙏🏽
So, here’s to learning more of my language.

Sometimes I forget that every system and policy was designed to erase me, my family and my lineage - and somehow I am still here. Not only surviving but thriving. 😭🫶🏽🪶✨
So many of the statistics about Indigenous people are woven into my own story and my own family.
And somehow, I’ve learned to use all that pain and grief as a compass and a catalyst, a guiding North Star. To make sure that no one would have to feel the pain that I’ve felt or my families. To be in service to others.
On the difficult days, I remember that..every time you reconnect to your culture, learn and pray in your native language, braid your hair, learn how to dance, attend ceremony, fast for others, etc,
even if it feels imperfect -
it goes against everything that they tried to take from us and that in itself, is a quiet rebellion. 🦅🪶❤️

Bali has changed me forever. I originally came here to focus on writing my first book for @simonschusterca and to complete a sound healing training. What I didn’t realize was that one of the very first teachings I would receive was learning how to truly receive again. 🌊✨🌿🙏🏽
Before coming here, I had been working nonstop for four months straight -no weekends, no real rest. Always pouring into others and always giving.
This land brought me back to who “Shayla” truly is - beneath the projections, expectations, and judgments that were never mine to carry. Being here cleared old cords and gave me razor-sharp clarity about my life, my past, my future, and who is coming with me into my next chapter.
The Balinese people have truly restored my faith in humanity. There is such a genuine kindness here. They see you for YOU. Their care isn’t performative or transactional - it isn’t about extracting anything from you. It’s simply who they are, rooted in faith, devotion, and culture.
Bali is known as the “Island of the Gods,” and lives by the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - harmony with Creator, with one another, and with the land. You feel it everywhere: in the architecture, the agriculture, the offerings, the way people treat each other and nature itself.
I’m honestly in tears thinking about how much this place and the people here have taught me. I know I’ll be back here often. I’m so grateful to Creator for bringing me 3 spiritually grounded, aligned sisters I didn’t even know I needed. @brookiedigi @biancaeurope @francslyn.sequeira 💕 Forever thankful for this chapter.

Indigenous beauty was never about fitting in - it’s about remembering who we are. This Indigenous History Month, I honour the beauty practices passed down through my lineage. Not as trends, but as acts of resistance, remembrance, and love. It is about reclaiming the rituals that have always lived within us - braiding, beading, cleansing, adorning - with intention, pride, and care.
National Indigenous Peoples Month is a reminder of our power, our presence, and the stories that will never be erased. Indigenous representation and inclusion are vital, because too often we are made invisible in a society built on our lands. Yet, our teachings, stories, and healing practices continue to influence and inspire communities around the world.

Today, I’m especially grateful to witness our voices rising, our languages returning, and our communities embodying the teachings Creator gifted us.
🧡 Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day.
One of the most powerful ways to show support is to reclaim your own relationship to the Land, to the elements, and to one another.
In a world built on fragmentation, exploitation, and disconnection - the most revolutionary thing we can do is the opposite. Even within our own communities. To heal, to connect, to practice compassion towards one another despite our own differences.
Other ways to support today and every day:

What does Indigenous beauty look like today? Backstage at this year’s Runway of Reziliencewith Sephora Canada x Seeing Red, I had the honour of connecting with trailblazing Indigenous designers @taalrumiq and @lesley_hampton , along with one of my favourite beauty brand founders @cheekbonejenn . Through the beauty of fashion and self-expression, they’re reclaiming their Indigenous identity through storytelling, art, and fashion while carrying forward generational teachings with every stitch and shade.
From daily rituals to runway looks and regalia, Indigenous creativity is living medicine and how we remember, heal, and dream the future forward.

Couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate Indigenous History Month than a beautiful getaway with my mom to @fairmontbanff, where we had the chance to support their first-ever Indigenous Marketplace. 🧡
The weekend kicked off with a warm opening reception, an unforgettable performance by @ashleyghostkeeper, and an inspiring lineup of Indigenous vendors like @nativedivacreations, @lorettas_wellness_circle, and one of my favorite beauty brands @motherearthessentials. We even crafted our first dreamcatchers with @iskadreams (let’s just say mine turned out way better than my moms 😂).
From scenic views of Lake Louise to attending the Banff Pow wow and seeing familiar faces, to delicious food, the sauna, and the outdoor pool - every moment felt special.
A weekend to remember, and one we hope to return to. Grateful to witness and support this initiative honoring Indigenous creativity and culture.

In your 20s, you may never see Indigenous people represented in the wellness industry. That’s exactly why it’s important that you become that person. 🪶✨🫶🏽🥹
Statistically speaking, I shouldn’t be here.
Every hardship that touches Indigenous families has touched mine - residential schools, the child welfare system, poverty, the prison system, and losing people I love because of these systems. 🥺
I wasn’t raised with much, but with my family I felt like I had everything. And at 18, I left home with $400 in my pocket and a vision no one else could see. I moved to Vancouver alone, hoping there was something more for me.
Eventually, I hit my own cycles. I got my heart broken, hit a rock bottom I didn’t think I’d get out of - and in that breaking point, I took out a $5,000 loan for a yoga teacher training because I had nothing left to lose.
That training, reconnecting to my culture, and coming back to ceremony ended up saving my life. It brought me back home into my body. It reconnected me to my purpose and my path.
I’m forever grateful for the practice of yoga and to have had the opportunity to travel to Rishikesh, India, to learn directly from the community it comes from and I look forward to going back and giving back. 🥹✨🙏🏽.
I’m also grateful for the elders and knowledge carriers that I have collaborated with and learned from alongside my journey. Knowing that healing is a lifelong commitment.
So when I talk about Indigenous representation and inclusion in wellness, I don’t mean it as a trend or an aesthetic or a talking point. It literally saves lives.
We deserve to see ourselves here. We deserve to have our voices centered in health and wellness spaces.
I say this as someone who had to become the very thing she never saw.

It’s almost that time of year again. Two weeks until I’m somewhere new. 🌊 🌿💕✨ One thing I’ve learned to love about myself is that I stopped waiting for permission - or for external validation - to make the decisions that shape my life.
The moment I quit waiting on the world (or the people around me) for consent was the moment I truly started living with intention, clarity, and trust in my own choices.
I’ve travelled across the world alone, and each journey has expanded me in ways I never expected or imagined. I also want to acknowledge that travelling is a privilege - one I don’t take lightly. Being invited onto new lands and to learn from different cultures is one of the greatest gifts I have received. 🙏🏽✨🫶🏽

I didn’t grow up seeing Indigenous women reflected in fitness spaces - and even now, we are rarely centered in mainstream wellness.
And yet, we have been leaders in well-being for thousands of years. Our entire worldview is rooted in holistic health. Our language carries the understanding that wellness isn’t just individual - it’s relational.
It’s about the well-being of our bodies, our spirits, our land, and especially our community.
Our well-being is directly connected to our communities well-being.
As Plains Cree - Nehiyaw - a word that means being a “four-bodied person”. I was taught that we are reflected within the Medicine Wheel: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.
For many of us, movement isn’t just a workout - it’s reclamation. It’s intergenerational healing. It’s taking back our power, autonomy, and self-sovereignty.
When Indigenous women are visible in global wellness spaces, it shifts something. It tells the next generation: you belong here too.

Being able to be fully present in our bodies, in our breath, and in this moment is our birthright. But for many Black and Indigenous women, that presence isn’t always accessible. Generations of survival mode and systemic barriers can make stillness feel out of reach.
That’s why I’m so proud to share this series with you.
Power of Presence is a collaboration @onepeloton @pelotonstudios between @chelsealovesyoga and I and it includes:

🌊 A slow flow to connect breath and movement
