🔥 In 1885, Vancouver caught fire. Most people have never heard what happened next. When the flames hit and people started jumping into Burrard Inlet to survive, it was the Indigenous women of the community who responded, led by an elder named Angus Rivers. With the men away working in the mountains, she gathered every woman who knew how to paddle and put them in canoes. 12 canoes crossed the inlet that day. They didn’t speak the same language as the people they were saving. So they sang, loud enough to be heard over the fire, loud enough to guide people to the boats. They pulled survivors out of the water, brought them back to the longhouses, fed them, and clothed them. This is what caring for each other looks like in action. Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. 🦅❤️✨🙏🏽 We already know the statistics; we are 12x more likely to go missing. Less likely to have our stories shared. More likely to experience violence on our own lands. And yet, we are so much more than a statistic. ❤️✨🦅 We are life givers, matriarchs, water and land protectors. We are represented within the bowl of a pipe - acknowledging the balance of masculine and feminine. We represent that sacred fire within the center of a tipi. We are guided by Grandmother Moon + our values are connected to Mother Earth. 🌕🌎 Our reflection is found within the waters - nipiy - we are that sacred connection to life itself. And yet, a lot of parallel violations have happened to Indigenous women the same time we started harming the Earth and the Waters. So I believe that parallel healing also has to happen because is not just an Indigenous issue, this is a systemic and a human rights one. We deserve to feel safe in our own homelands. We deserve to grow old. To love and be loved. To access safe, culturally grounded wellness spaces. To find sisterhood within each other. ❤️🦅✨ So today - and every day, say their names. demand justice. do not stay silent. Which makeup the foundations of the medicine wheel. The medicine wheel is a circle that represents the interconnectedness of everything and everyone. ⭕️ That circle is divided into four sections. To find balance and harmony in our lives, we must first find that reflection within our medicine wheel , within ourselves. For me, right now, that looks like trusting in Creator + trusting in my dreams and visions + learning my language because our language carries a spirit. It opens a doorway that helps dismantle the limited and fragmented ways I’ve come to see the world through English alone. As I learn more of my language, I begin to see and move through life with a more relational worldview. And through that, I cultivate deeper relationships with everything around me that are rooted in respect and reciprocity. Whenever I second-guess myself or feel fragmented, I pray in my language and say my nèhiyawi-wihowin (spirit name). It grounds me in my identity and reminds me where I come from and that name reminds me of my responsibility in the world. Knowing my identity as an Indigenous person gives me a foundation to build from. Every tool, modality, and teaching I learn can grow from there, but without that, there is no solid ground. Setting that foundation is like anchoring into the teachings of the medicine wheel- realizing it acts as an internal compass. It reminds me that I am not alone, and that everything in my life- whether a lesson or an expansion - is here to teach me. Through knowing my culture, my language, and my identity, I carry a sense of purpose that allows me to trust in everything sent my way. 🌞✨🙏🏽 So, here’s to learning more of my language. 📸: @jacky.photos

What I didn’t realize was that one of the very first teachings I would receive was learning how to truly receive again. 🌊✨🌿🙏🏽 Before coming here, I had been working nonstop for four months straight -no weekends, no real rest. Always pouring into others and always giving. This land brought me back to who “Shayla” truly is - beneath the projections, expectations, and judgments that were never mine to carry. Being here cleared old cords and gave me razor-sharp clarity about my life, my past, my future, and who is coming with me into my next chapter. The Balinese people have truly restored my faith in humanity. There is such a genuine kindness here. They see you for YOU. Their care isn’t performative or transactional - it isn’t about extracting anything from you. It’s simply who they are, rooted in faith, devotion, and culture. Bali is known as the “Island of the Gods,” and lives by the philosophy of Tri Hita Karana - harmony with Creator, with one another, and with the land. You feel it everywhere: in the architecture, the agriculture, the offerings, the way people treat each other and nature itself. I’m honestly in tears thinking about how much this place and the people here have taught me. I know I’ll be back here often. I’m so grateful to Creator for bringing me 3 spiritually grounded, aligned sisters I didn’t even know I needed. @brookiedigi @biancaeurope @francslyn.sequeira 💕 Forever thankful for this chapter. Bali has changed me forever. I originally came here to focus on writing my first book for @simonschusterca and to complete a sound healing training. What I didn’t realize was that one of the very first teachings I would receive was learning how to truly receive again. 🌊✨🌿🙏🏽 Before coming here, I had been working nonstop for four months straight -no weekends, no real rest. Always pouring into others and always giving. This land brought me back to who “Shayla” truly is - beneath the projections, expectations, and judgments that were never mine to carry. As I’ve gotten older, my work and network has expanded as well as my social capital. People get attached to the following they see on social media. As it grows, so do people’s expectations, projections and judgements. For anyone that knows me, know I keep an intimate circle around me. I have a small group of friends and am loyal to the people close to me. I prefer to focus on work, myself, my few and my community. However, ever since I was young girl, people have mistaken this, my shyness, my introverted-ness for fakeness, selfishness, or labeling me as thinking I am “better than everyone else”. Even though I’ve never actually met them in real life and just prefer to mind my business. I am a clairsentient + highly sensitive person (HSP). I can be overwhelmed by bright lights, loud noises, large crowds and by too much sensory overload. Though, I’ve learned that my vulnerability isn’t a weakness but a superpower. ✨🦅 Highly sensitives have the ability to feel everything and that gives us the ability to relate to many people throughout life. However, it’s not our responsibility to heal or alchemize everyone’s pain. (Invitation to watch Maryam’s Hasnaa’s course on becoming the “healed healer” or “retired empath” as well as the course “wake up from being woke”.) To this day, I don’t understand why people don’t use the same energy that it takes to gossip and tear others down, to utilize and focus on their craft, their work and community. I think people often forget to go a lot harder on the systems and less on each other, and that through that we would be a lot stronger working together to dismantle the systems of oppression. I hope one day as a society we have the ability to have critical discourse, without needing to hate people that disagree with us. What are your hopes during this time? Every hardship that touches Indigenous families has touched mine - residential schools, the child welfare system, poverty, the prison system, and losing people I love because of these systems. 🥺 I wasn’t raised with much, but with my family I felt like I had everything. And at 18, I left home with $400 in my pocket and a vision no one else could see. I moved to Vancouver alone, hoping there was something more for me. Eventually, I hit my own cycles. I got my heart broken, hit a rock bottom I didn’t think I’d get out of - and in that breaking point, I took out a $5,000 loan for a yoga teacher training because I had nothing left to lose. That training, reconnecting to my culture, and coming back to ceremony ended up saving my life. It brought me back home into my body. It reconnected me to my purpose and my path. I’m forever grateful for the practice of yoga and to have had the opportunity to travel to Rishikesh, India, to learn directly from the community it comes from and I look forward to going back and giving back. 🥹✨🙏🏽. I’m also grateful for the elders and knowledge carriers that I have collaborated with and learned from alongside my journey. Knowing that healing is a lifelong commitment. So when I talk about Indigenous representation and inclusion in wellness, I don’t mean it as a trend or an aesthetic or a talking point. It literally saves lives. We deserve to see ourselves here. We deserve to have our voices centered in health and wellness spaces. I say this as someone who had to become the very thing she never saw. Two weeks until I’m somewhere new. 🌊 🌿💕✨ One thing I’ve learned to love about myself is that I stopped waiting for permission - or for external validation - to make the decisions that shape my life. The moment I quit waiting on the world (or the people around me) for consent was the moment I truly started living with intention, clarity, and trust in my own choices.
