My birthday is next week!

And like I’ve done the past few years I’ll be posting a list of completely unrequested birthday advice.

Here's the post I made September 17th last year which the algorithms deemed controversial—see if you can guess which one!—before firing it around to a million people. All the better for "sticky eyeballs", etc.

Thought I would repost it as I chisel away at this year's list...

PS. Let me know in the comments any you agree or disagree with!

Dear Prime Minister Mark Carney (@markjcarney)

I wrote you a letter about Ontario Premier Doug Ford's (@fordnationdougford) proposed expansion of Billy Bishop Airport into Lake Ontario.

I mailed it to you—and I’m sharing it here.

I hope you’ll read it.

Thank you,

Today is my birthday!

I'm celebrating by sharing '46 things I’ve (Almost) Learned As I Turn 46.'

Lists like these are preachy by nature so lemme know which you agree with, disagree with, or what you might add!

So, uh...

Last year I bought a 750 square foot painting.

10’ tall, 75’ long, on a lonnnng strip of curved concrete outside a busy downtown subway station.

Few months earlier I was walking under a bridge on a freezing night with @mbs_works when we stumbled on a stunning spraypainted Hooded Merganser. I was shook!

I noticed a word in the corner—Sweetman—and googled “sweetman toronto” which took me to @nick_sweetman who became my favorite graffiti artist.

For months, I kept wondering how I could work with Nick till one day I walked past a brutalist concrete wall behind Dupont Station.

The station is packed! Buses, trains, colleges, @casalomatoronto, everyone racing uptown, downtown, passing this massive empty wall.

I learned the Toronto Transit Commission (@takethettc) was paying to paint over tags on that wall 2-3x a week!

So I began organizing meetings with TTC councillors and local associations to work through q’s about paint, access, maintenance, and timelines.

Then I hired Nick for the the art!

I gave him my two-word vision
—local birds!—and he did the rest.

There are 16 species on the wall and all have been seen within 333m of Dupont Station within the past 3.33 years according to data from @cornellbirds and @team_ebird

The result?

A painting I am endlessly inspired by which I hope inspires others, too.

Nick started painting on September 17th (my bday) and worked tirelessly—no stencils! no AI! no aids except a ladder!—until November.

Birds from L to R: Black-and-white Warbler, Blue Jay, White-Breasted Nuthatch, Cedar Waxwing, Northern Flicker, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, White-throated Sparrow, Scarlet Tanager, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, European Starling, Red-tailed Hawk, House Finch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Turkey Vulture, Blackburnian Warbler, and Common Grackle.

We recorded a podcast there, made a documentary (link in bio), and he added beauty to a dreary corner.

Now ... I have big news.

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER!

Why?

Because we need more beauty, more love, more awe, & more giant colorful things to walk by when you least expect them!

So let me ask you:

WHAT BIRD DO YOU WANT ON THE WALL??

Do you feel like it’s getting harder to get stuff done?

It’s not just you.

The distraction machine is cranked to 10.

Endless apps and feeds and algorithms fight for our attention.

They’re good at getting it, too!

I find myself revisiting these 10 simple practices to help make sure I actually get anything done.

What small daily habits do you use for productivity?

Reading doesn’t just inform—it transforms.

When you read fiction, you’re not you …

You’re another gender, another religion, another time in the world, another place in the world…

No wonder research suggests that reading opens up the mirror neurons responsible for empathy, compassion, and understanding (Dovey, 2015). Not to mention, reading can impact the future you—as characters and stories influence individuality (Dovey, 2015).

When I was Director of Leadership Development at Walmart—the world’s largest company with 2.5 million employees—guess what the #1 derailer was for all leaders at all levels?

It was precisely EQ — or, when you get into the data, empathy, compassion, and understanding.

No wonder! Those are difficult skills to teach. You can’t ship somebody off to empathy class! It doesn’t exist.

So here’s a counterintuitive way to grow as a leader:

Read more fiction!

What’s the last work of fiction you read and loved?

If you drank a bottle of wine before bed every night, slept within 5 feet of a bottle of wine, and drank a bottle of wine when you woke up every morning, what would we call you?

Reading does more than inform us — it transforms us.

When we read fiction we’re another gender, another religion, we’re in another time of the world, another place in the world.

Research shows that reading fiction builds empathy, compassion, and understanding.

Those skills form EQ which is the number one leadership derailer to getting promoted..

What’s one counterintuitive way to becoming a better leader?

She reads a book a week ... with a full-time acting career.

How does she do it?

We welcome global gallivant and raging bibliophile Eve Harlow on 3 Books!

Born in Russia, raised in Israel, living in Canada and the U.S., Eve Harlow is a talented actress best known for roles in The 100, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Night Agent, and her current star turn as Dr. Ingrid Derian in Watson, the medical-mystery thriller inspired by stories of Sherlock Holmes.

Somehow between her busy acting schedule, Eve finds time to read a book a week. She’s a library junkie, a reading phenom, and posts stacks of her latest reads @eveharlow between red carpet shots and behind-the-scenes clips from her shows.

This is a conversation for all of us who aspire to grow our love of reading books amidst the digital deluge. We live in worlds designed to tease our brains into shallow skimming. So how does Eve do it? What systems does she use? How does she think about her reading life? And (of course!) which 3 books shaped her more than any others?

We talk about reading habits, magic realism, identity in a politically robust and privacy-eroded world, deliberate daydreaming, building resilience, and much, much more.

Pull up a chair and join us in this bookish conversation.

Let’s flip the page to Chapter 159 now…

I’m thrilled to welcome our latest 3 Books guest: a luminous force in publishing, a powerhouse editor-turned-author, and a wonderful storyteller: the one and only @NitaProse.

Raised in Ontario’s Simcoe County, Nita began her career by contributing to literary magazines, became a production editor with HarperCollins, and then became a Senior Editor at Doubleday.

She then held the lofty publishing position of Vice President and Editorial Director at Simon & Schuster Canada and oversaw titles by authors like Rupi Kaur (@rupikaur_), Kate Morton (@katemortonauthor), Iain Reid (@tidydissolve), and... me!

Nita was the editor of my book on resilience 'You Are Awesome: How To Navigate Change, Wrestle with Failure, and Live an Intentional Life' which came out in 2019 and my book on gratitude and community 'Our Book Of Awesome,' which came out in 2022.

Nita has since left publishing to write full-time and today her phenomenal career and perspectives offer a true publishing and writing masterclass.

Tune in as we discuss: What does an editor actually do? How do you get a job in publishing? What writing routines structure Nita’s stories? Why might you keep the novel you're writing a secret from your long-term partner? How do you write an allegory? And (of course!) which 3 books most shaped her life?

We talk about creating characters grounded in emotional truths, measuring success within the labyrinth-like writing industry, the importance of reading across genres, and much, much more.
