Rare diseases affect 1 in 10 Americans, but research that advances our knowledge of how to help people affected by rare diseases has been threatened or eliminated completely due to cuts to medical research funding. It is critically important that we continue to support scientists who are doing the work that ultimately improves health and quality of life for all of us. #dorisdukefdnpartner #rarediseases #cancer #dermatologist

i used to think that protecting forests meant leaving them alone.

but the more i learn, the more i realize that so many of the places we love are already dealing with the effects of human impact, so caring for ecosystems often requires a more hands-on approach.

this video is a little glimpse into why climate-smart forest work matters, and why i’m learning more about it with support from @DorisDukeFdn! these are investments in climate mitigation, ecological resilience, and in communities that depend on healthy forests across north america. learn more with me! Follow the Doris Duke Foundation to see more of the work they are doing around these topics.

For Sickle Cell Awareness Month, let’s talk about the story of Dr. Charity Oyedeji, a Duke hematologist whose groundbreaking Sickle Cell Disease Functional Assessment tool was designed to capture how patients truly live and age with this disease.

But earlier this year, the NIH pulled her grant. Not because the science wasn’t sound, but because her work centered equity in a condition that disproportionately affects marginalized communities.

This isn’t just a blow to the scientific community. It’s a warning. When equity in science is treated like a threat, the progress and lives of millions are put at risk. #SickleCellAwareness #DorisDukePartner #HealthEquity #NIHcuts

the misconception about what artists & actors do in our “down time” from 8 show weeks… couldn’t be farther from the truth. and keeping our skills, minds, & bodies ready in the *pricey* environment in NYC can seem at times unsustainable. what are some things you do as actors/artists that provide some security in your rest periods? (shout out to @dorisdukefdn for making the world a better and more sustainable place for artists.) #DorisDukePartner

You want to get paid?? For your work?? You’re being sooo crazy right now.
For real though, artists’ work is too often taken for granted. They deserve the same protections and support as other workers. #DDFPartner

For the last day of Sickle Cell Awareness Month, meet Kendric Cromer, the first sickle cell patient in the U.S. to undergo an FDA-approved commercial gene therapy.

In September 2024, after 44 days at Children’s National Hospital, Kendric walked out as the first patient to receive this groundbreaking treatment. His story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we invest in conditions that have too often been overlooked. At a moment when research funding is being cut, Kendric’s journey underscores just how many lives depend on innovation, equity, and continued commitment to science. #SickleCell #KendricCromer #Innovation #HealthEquity #sicklecellawareness

Mosques have been part of America’s religious landscape for longer than most people realize. Watch American Muslims on PBS to explore the history of these sacred spaces and the communities that built them (link in bio). 🕌

We’re deeply grateful to the @DorisDukeFDN for its long-term support of the American Muslims project and for championing U.S. Muslim storytelling in media, helping bring fuller histories, diverse voices, and deeper public understanding to wider audiences.

How do we create the conditions that artists need to thrive?

I sat down with Ashley Ferro Murray from the Doris Duke Foundation (@dorisdukefdn ) and Ziyaad Bhorat from Mozilla (@mozillafoundation ) to discuss artists’ need for equitable infrastructure that empowers them to be the entrepreneurs that they already are.

Today we're announcing The Vanguard, the 1st ever award and accelerator for innovative leaders in the visual and performing arts, in partnership with the @dorisdukefdn.

American arts institutions are facing a genuine crisis. With declining audiences, increasing costs, and shifts in philanthropy, they need new ideas more than ever. But leaders who do have new ideas report they often feel isolated, without the risk capital and support they deserve.

The Vanguard was created to change that. It starts with the $100,000 Vanguard Award and investment in new ideas. These ideas are developed in a year-long Vanguard Accelerator, in partnership with @mitsloan and @chicagobooth; it begins with a weeklong intensive at @hi_shangrila.

The Vanguard is also a cohort, and we know each year’s class will build a community to support each other, and the next.

The Vanguard's open call application begins on May 18 with informational webinars to come. Detailed info at the link in bio and at remuseum.org/the-vanguard.

The Doris Duke Foundation is conducting a research study to understand how performing artists view the opportunities and challenges presented by technology in the arts.

As part of this effort, we are inviting the artists who are part of our community to participate in a brief online survey. Please take a few moments to share your opinions by completing the questionnaire at the link in bio.

This survey is being conducted on behalf of the Doris Duke Foundation by Meridian Research & Insights. As an independent research company, they will ensure that all survey responses are kept completely anonymous and confidential.
