Welcome…to Jurassic Park! Nearly caught a flame at the end there 😂
Ryan freaked out that I wasn’t wearing ‘handles’ half way through and he kept touching Winnie 😅😂😂 but I wasn’t gonna let that hold me back. Who wants to see the BTS?

Oh and anyone know the casting directors for strictly? Not sure about the curse… but I feel like we’d be pretty good candidates 😵‍💫

Ps. If you’re facing the reality of a stoma bag, then let me tell you that you can still do hard things, or ANY thing for that matter. Today I went to watch Ryan in a fitness challenge in east London and I had TWO people come up to me to say they had stoma bags and they were taking part. I was so impressed 😮‍💨. It was a gruelling workout. 🏋️

Made me wanna get back into it tbf. Ryan is doing an Ironman in Hawaii in June and I feel like I should set myself a mini challenge at some point to see if I can push myself a bit. Especially now I’ve overcome quite a bad flare and managed to get myself back into remission without ending up in the bad place. Maybe there’s hope for clawing my old identity back after all?!?? I’m just still quite scared.

Did an ice bath to connect with myself and impress my son and instead I nearly connected with the afterlife. WTF is going on here ☠️

Not even joking my ptsd really kicked in and all the research I’ve ever done on health over the past 36 years flooded right through my blood and bones as I tried to figure out how to survive. No freeze instinct here. Pure fight and flight. lol.

On a serious note - talk me through how the hell im supposed to get on board with this! And is this actually good for inflammation or is my system now in a state of total shock/ is the cortisol gonna make matters worse 😂😂

You should watch Ryan cruise in there for 10 minutes in 3oC…. THREE DEGREES !

I’ve done ice stuff before but this machine is COLDER than cold with that metal base. I like the sound of my blood vessels constricting and then flushing to blow the cobwebs out and the Adrenalin feels quite nice but I’m so sensitive to allll sensory things these days so this felt nuts. My poor nerves. 😳😳😳

There was a moment in time when I never would have shared me looking like this in a swimsuit, but I know now what I didn’t know back then. And I’m only just starting back on a little health kick pow pow 💥 💥 watch this space, 5 pack inbound (no longer 6 pack with my silly stoma bag Winnie)

You’re told the only thing that matters is a healthy baby.

As if the woman who carried that baby isn’t allowed to matter too.

We check the baby at six weeks. We weigh them, measure them, celebrate them.
But the mother? She’s sent home with stitches, hormones, fear, and a body she barely recognises… and somehow is expected to just crack on.

Gratitude becomes a bit of a gag.
Because yes, we’re grateful that we have a baby.
But we can be grateful and broken at the same time.

Sometimes it simply feels impossible to feel ‘grateful’.

I couldn’t when i was drowning in the pp period and suffering with pnd + post traumatic stress disorder. I could hardly spell my own name. Other people might not have got that.

I remember someone telling me that I should try to focus on gratitude shortly after I gave birth. It sent me into a total spiral. I couldn’t concentrate on anything other than blood and sirens, let alone f***ing gratitude. 4 years on I respect that the person hadn’t experienced severe debilitating mental trauma before. The tricky thing is I think many of the people making important healthcare decisions and often judging mothers haven’t experienced it for themselves.

Mothers are not vessels.
We are not the afterthought once the baby arrives.

And care for our beautiful babies should never mean neglecting the mother.

This is dedicated to all those who didn’t survive and those who lost their babies.

Thank you to the 30,000 of you who have already signed our petition.

This number is significant because it’s also the number of women who develop PTSD following childbirth every year.

@theoclarkemp and I believe that we NEED a maternity commissioner in this country - because every woman deserves the right to a safe and dignified birth. It would be great to see our government enforce some of the 748 recommendations that have been made following various inquiries over the past decade.

I have to say i’m SO RELIEVED that so many of you care about women, our birth rights, and our babies. Especially at a time when we have people like Steven Bartlett blaming women for a declining population.

The time is now. I’ve been reading a brilliant book about tipping points this week and I think we are about to be the ‘push’ that nudges something major over the line. Please join me in that pursuit.

This issue can’t keep getting sidelined in favour of other projects. Childbirth is the inception of life. What is more important than that. We need standardised care for all.

Next steps - We would love a conversation with our health minister Wes.

When people ask how Greece was I send them this video and it keeps everyone quiet for a little 🤏 while.

Ps.
Anyone else feel like they wear a lot of hats? This is me wearing fun mum mode hat. I had my reservations about posting it because Ryan and I look like two bars of soap squished together in a soap dish, but ya know it’s good to be real and body posi and all that. Winnie was having a good day out.

I have quite a lot to say about what is going on in the maternity space atm, but I can only move through one thing at a time so please bare with me as I prioritise things that I think are immediately helpful.

→ This week, the government announced that Martha’s Rule is being extended to all NHS maternity settings. This is a direct response to the Ockenden report into Nottingham University Hospitals, which was the largest maternity review in NHS history and sadly uncovered that there were 444 potentially avoidable outcomes across 2,500 families.

Martha’s Rule is SO IMPORTANT because it gives us layman folk a bit of power when we are at our MOST vulnerable.

…and giving birth, especially for the first time, has to to be one of the most vulnerable moments in a woman’s life.

I’m pleased to see the government take action on this because lots of structural changes that are announced take YONKS before ever trickling down to reach the general public, aka, US, as patients relying and trusting on our nhs healthcare.

Martha’s Rule was born from the most devastating loss. Martha Mills was 13 when she died from sepsis in 2021, after her family’s concerns about her deteriorating condition went unheard. Her parents, Merope and Paul, turned that grief into a campaign that is now saving lives across England. I well up when I think about that tragedy because I can’t even begin to imagine the unimaginable pain of losing a child, but they have done something unthinkably brave by turning her legacy into something that will save so many mothers and babies. It’s brilliant the rule has transcended into maternity care.

And here’s why I really wanted to race to write this post before the weekend...

I feel like a rule is v powerful but only if people know it exists and know how to use it. I’ve personally been informed by lots of brilliant people about the rule because it actively sits within the campaign work that i’m doing. But for lots of people they may NOT be informed. They might miss it. They might not catch the news that day. They might not be on social media. Not their fault, not the gov fault, just the way it is. So please share this, but also talk to people i 👇🏼

Made in Chelsea star Louise Thompson says she's lucky to be alive after almost losing her life following the traumatic birth of her son Leo, with the experience leaving her with PTSD.

Now, she's joined forces with former MP Theo Clarke - who also had a traumatic labour - to urge the government to appoint a Maternity Commissioner, aimed at improving care for mothers and their babies.

It comes a week after the government asked for evidence - something they think is a waste of time.

Winnie was born 2 years ago.
And we’ve been attached at the hip ever since.

I’m not normally compatible with Aquarius signs but then again this wasn’t a relationship that I chose.
We were thrown in to each other’s lives out of necessity.

It’s been an interesting journey.
You’ve taught me a lot.
I think I owe you a lot.
Sometimes you’re my best friend,
other times I hate you.
You’re clever
stubborn
overly honest - I don’t need to know that much detail about my health thank you very much.

It’s funny to think that you might be in my life forever.
Clinging on right up until the end.

Two years on and I’m still making my peace. 🤝🏼

Although I did have a massage two nights ago as a v day treat and I reeealllly resented you. I couldn’t be bothered to explain my situation to the lovely foreign massage therapist who thought I said I have stomach problems instead of a stoma bag. I nodded and prayed that she didn’t get all up in my groin or she’d have had a right fright. Sometimes I wish you away. Especially this last month when you’ve been raking me up from my deepest sleep and sweetest dreams every single night. Good practise for another kid I guess.

Sometimes it’s ok to complain.
I never do.
I joke, but I don’t complain.
I’ll complain about a chip on the sideboard or the dogs barking.
But never about Winnie
Even when she leaks
It’s good I’ve got a solid handle on ‘perspective’ 😮‍💨😂

For the most part life is a breeze. 🌴

This morning I’m allowing myself a moment of reflection… I’m sat here writing this and feeling grateful to the first person who ever performed a colectomy … can you believe this -

The first recorded colectomy was a right hemicolectomy performed in 1732 by the French surgeon George Arnaud de Ronsil.

The EARLY 1700s.

I wouldn’t wanna be the person on that operating table. Thanks to the team that did mine so tidily (I think) and so safely. And thanks to all the test subjects before me. I wonder what will be possible for ibd / colon cancer sufferers in the future?

x x

If anyone has any questions please fire away as I know it’s a little unusual.

What a privilege it is to have your bed taken over by a tiny human who thinks it’s the safest place in the world. 👶🏼🌙🪺🛌💫

Imagine the parent police trying to tell you that THIS is a terrible idea. Yes, I may not have slept through the night fully in 4 years, but this is the face I get to wake up to and that makes it feel like a fair trade. Plus we may only get one turn to do this parenting thing and the days turn into years faster than the speed of light so I’m soaking it all up. We manage to make it work and we manage to achieve the things we want and need to.

I have a confession (I won’t pretend I’m perfect)…I’m quite looking forward to taking a melatonin tonight - I’ve just been prescribed them today because I’m doing an embryo freeze cycle atm and the menopur jabs are making me WIRED at night. I’ve never been an insomniac but I feel like I’m on speed.
