Andy Burnham asked me to meet him yesterday and I said no.
Not because I am against him.
Not because I cannot help him (and our country) and vice versa.
But because I already made a promise to someone else.
My son. I promised to take him out for the day to see hawks and owls!
I always remember kids don’t do what you say, they do what you do. And if I promised to take my son out for the day then didn’t - what does a promise mean after that.
I am sure Andy would understand. Infact I know he does.

A mortgage is a trap.
You’re essentially locking yourself in jail.
Let me explain:
You never truly own your home with a mortgage.
The bank owns it. You’re renting from them… with interest.
Miss a few payments and they’ll happily take "your" house and find a new tenant.
And unlike renting, which often comes with yearly contracts allowing you flexibility…
You’re trapped for often up to 3 decades.
Even if you manage to pay it off someday, you’re not free from hidden costs.
- Stamp duty
- Taxes
- Lawyer fees
- Maintenance
- Upgrades
These are constant costs that could be spent investing in yourself and your future.
But this isn’t about Rent vs Mortgage.
There are alternatives, and no one talks about them.
People tell me, “I don’t have the money to chase my dream,” but the truth is…
The money they need is locked in unnecessary costs they don’t need… (but they’re comfortable with.)
We’ve been brainwashed into thinking homeownership = success.
When I started my first business, I didn’t have a mortgage.
In fact, I didn’t even have a proper flat.
I slept in a friend's spare room for a time.
Another time, I bartered for an office and slept in it.
Was it comfortable? Not particularly.
But I was free, and I used that freedom to build my dream.
Today, I live in a nice home.
But I bought that house outright, because I could afford it.
There's no mortgage or debt involved.
My dad died thinking his “good debt” would secure our future.
It didn’t.
Mortgages are not the dream. Freedom is.
Let’s stop glorifying debt and start chasing freedom instead.
