Kindness and niceness aren’t the same thing.

Niceness is the performance: the smile, the polite silence, the moment that keeps things comfortable. Kindness is the action, even when it’s awkward or hard.

Not everything kind feels good in the moment. But that’s often the point.

Great leaders play the long game.

Instead of needing to be the smartest voice in the room, they choose to create space for others to grow.

Being a leader isn’t about being in charge.

Simon Sinek breaks down the difference between authority and leadership: one is given by title, the other is earned through trust and responsibility.

Leadership isn’t about being in charge — it’s about taking care of the people in your charge, helping them rise, and showing up for them consistently. When leaders lead with service, loyalty and trust follow naturally.

You’ll take away:
🧭 Leadership is service
🧠 Trust beats control
🤝 Safety drives loyalty

It is better to have a great team than a team of greats. The ability of a group of people to do remarkable things hinges on how well those people can pull together.

We don’t become leaders when we accept a title and the perks that come with it. We become leaders when we accept responsibility for the wellbeing of others.

Three introverts walk into a bar and quickly run from it as fast as they can . . .

The three of us have so much fun together, but don’t back us into an unwanted social situation.

Thanks to @simonsinek for joining me and @adamgrant in Stockholm as our first guest on @thecuriosityshop.

Questions to ponder? (alone or with others)
1. How do you think about your own introversion/extroversion, needs, restoration time, and nervous system regulation?
2. Why aren’t we sharing our energy givers and takers with our teams?

We’ve shared these lessons in our org and it’s led to more connection and grace.

To listen or watch episode 14 in full, head to YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts.

✋ Raise your hand if you spend so much time on your phone that “Stranger Danger” now means you have no idea how to talk to actual humans.

We’ve been glued to screens, and honestly, chatting with new people can feel terrifying. But couples therapist and intimacy expert @estherperelofficial reminds us that talking to strangers isn’t just good for life—it’s an essential job skill too. So, what’s the best unexpected chat you’ve had with someone you didn’t know?

A few months ago, our friend Simon Sinek visited our BW Papersystems location in Phillips, WI to record an episode of his A Bit of Optimism podcast with Barry-Wehmiller Chairman Bob Chapman.

It wasn’t the first time Simon had been to Phillips, WI, and for his podcast, Simon not only wanted to talk to his good friend Bob, but other BW teammates in Phillips, some he had met almost 15 years ago.

That episode of Simon’s podcast is out now. We highly encourage you to listen to it or watch the video version on You Tube, which is almost a mini documentary. You can find it at the link in our bio.

On this episode of our Truly Human Leadership podcast, we want to bring you something special. While in Phillips to record, Simon and Bob held a Town Hall for the team members there as a thank you and to recognize them for the inspiration they have been, not only to Simon but countless others.

This Town Hall is a great dialogue between Bob and Simon and it also includes a couple questions from the audience, including the high school aged son of one of our team members that is a big fan of Simon’s and was very excited to talk to him. Also, Simon and Bob talk about the 10th anniversary revised and expanded edition of Bob and Raj Sisodia’s book, Everybody Matters: The Extraordinary Power of Caring for Your People Like Family.

PSA: If you drop acronyms like everyone’s in on the secret… they’re not. 😅
Let’s not make people feel like they missed the memo. Clear is cool.

What’s an acronym you had to pretend to understand for way too long? 👀👇

This simple story of a recruiter from the Marines illustrates a point I’ve seen over and over again: Great organizations don’t hire skilled people and motivate them. Great organizations hire already motivated people and inspire them.

In Hollywood, the gap between public and private selves can be huge. @roblowe’s secret to four decades of relevance?

Not playing that game.

He’s the same off camera as he is on camera—and that’s what makes him relatable. Authenticity isn’t about being perfect. It’s about owning your flaws…and sometimes turning them into strengths.

What’s one flaw of yours that’s secretly a superpower? 💥
