I literally did not sign up to be a hockey mom….I don’t mind but I found it daunting….all the etiquette that nobody teaches you and all the equipment that you’re supposed to know how to put on! It is a bit of a steep learning curve. 🫠 I recently found myself a bit lost trying to put on Charlie’s equipment for her since @shelbylui usually is the one to do it. There is an actual order of events or wearing I guess it is called. Once the order is mucked then something (or everything) is uncomfortable. Wish someone had told me so I am telling you now. I literally did not sign up to be a hockey mom….I don’t mind but I found it daunting….all the etiquette that nobody teaches you and all the equipment that you’re supposed to know how to put on! It is a bit of a steep learning curve. 🫠 I recently found myself a bit lost trying to put on Charlie’s equipment for her since @shelbylui usually is the one to do it. There is an actual order of events or wearing I guess it is called. Once the order is mucked then something (or everything) is uncomfortable. Wish someone had told me so I am telling you now. My process always starts with building volume and depth for the tree canopy, and only then I refine the details and add light accents✨ I personally love a hand-drawn look more than using pasted images — it makes each sketch unique and full of character. Happy Erniversary ❤️‍🩹 It’s been 11 years, and I still miss that little soul who watched me and Shelby grow up. Erny was our first Jack Russell, gentle, loyal, and full of quiet love. But as a mom to a neurodivergent child, I’ve learned to go deeper…Things that may not matter to a “typical” person are different…How does this surface feel under your hands?…Is this light too harsh?…Is there a sound you wish you could turn off? We put off so many things in life because we’re scared. I put off having kids for years because I was terrified of it. I avoided public speaking because I thought I’d embarrass myself. And for the longest time, I held back from posting on social media because I was afraid of being judged. Fear is sneaky like that….It convinces you to wait… until you’re “ready.” But the truth is, most of us never feel fully ready. Sometimes I wish I could go back and do things differently. I actually haven’t heard this from a client in a long time but this trend was way too fun not to try it. Building a career from nothing takes time…years of learning, experimenting, trusting your gut, and hoping the right clients trust in you and the process too. I’m so grateful for every client who took a chance, believed in the vision, and let me do what I do best. Beware of the contractor friend……😅 As someone who has been in the business for 20 years. This is one that I have heard countless times and unfortunately I have also picked up the pieces countless times. For some reason more often than not it just doesn’t work out. Friends always mean well but price isn’t everything. There is also timelines to meet, accountability and quality. Make sure you take that into consideration when picking a contractor. If it is one your designer is recommending then often times that person has been tried and vetted for you through their past projects. They already know if the contractor is responsive, if they have good trades, and if they are accountable. I truly believe it builds good work ethic to see what we have to do to earn money. This one seemed especially funny because I guess he has high expectations of a work site…but I guess he isn’t totally wrong. Twenty years ago, neither of us could have imagined where this journey would take us. What began as a shared passion for design grew into a business, a partnership, and a friendship that shaped so much of my life. As I close this chapter, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude…for our clients, our team, our industry partners, and everyone who trusted us with their homes, projects, and dreams. Most of all, I’m grateful to my business partner, Aleem. Thank you for taking a chance on two young designers with big ambitions, for the countless lessons, laughs, challenges, and successes we shared along the way. Somehow an introvert met an extrovert, and together we built something truly special.
