It’s been almost 1 year since we bought my childhood house and a lot has happened. I needed a break from sharing my world…to take some time for myself. Process the loss of my parents moving so far away. I honestly did not think that would bother me as much as it did. De stressed. Be still. Let the creative burnout that took over my brain pass…for a while I wasn’t sure if it would ever leave. But over the last couple months there’s been a shift. Everything feels lighter. I’ve learned to enjoy the process again. Finally looking at upholstery fabric, wallpaper, flooring, lighting, and of course window treatments. But I’m not going to rush it because this one is on my terms. Cheers to slow decorating.

My friend @lelaburris asked me where I buy my art. Oh man, where do I even begin? This is gonna have to be at least a two parter because anywhere and everywhere. I think the biggest thing is art isn’t necessarily a painting you hang on your wall. It can be a sculptural table, a lamp, a vase. But here are my sources:

Slide 1: @where_is_frances but I would say the drippy disco ball is art, the chair (which I consider art and no one is allowed to sit in) from @dyphornewyork, and the pottery in the cabinet is from @scenevintage and estate sales.

Slide 2: @vintagechicagodesign if you look closely it’s a bunch of lady bits 🫣😂

Slide 3: the gramaphone is from @architecturalanarchy and the guys are famous graffiti artists shot by @lanileephotography (set of 3 with only 3 prints ever sold - I’ll never part with them). The pink LOSER pottery is by @chrisheck1

Slide 4: this is the only print I think I have. Picasso - “Woman Wearing A Chemise.” I purchased her from @mariannedeley.stylist The umbrella is a lamp purchased from @carefullypicked, the woman sculpture is by Doris Rudoff (I went to her estate sale), and Edna Arnow pottery from @zovietfrance02

Slide 5: the paper art in the lucite box is from an estate sale and the painting is from @mydeerartshop_official I consider the sheep ottoman art and it’s from an estate sale as well. The neon light is by Rudi Stern.

Slide 6: abstract painting is from @southlooploft

Slide 7: is an original Martin Sumer from @gillianbryce

Slide 8: an original Italo Scanga purchased from an estate sale. He studied under Picasso. This one being a portrait is considered one of his earlier pieces. His cubist pieces were more popular.

Slide 9: the woman’s face is from one of my favorite dealers, @hitman_antiques_chicago. I also got the chain table from Hitman.

Slide 10: graphic abstract by @tonycurryart

Slide 11: this is one of those estate sale finds you read about in the news. The sale was only listed on Facebook in a buy/sell group. I was just drawn to it. She was $25 or $35 and she’s an original Gino Hollander.

Slide 12: the piece that introduced me to my friend and painting buddy @zovietfrance02

The number one question I get about buying my childhood home is what are you going to do with a second house? Are you going to rent it? Airbnb it? Are you flipping it? Nope. I’m keeping it just for me. Unless you belong to The Dead Sibling Club, it’s impossible to understand.

Last week was my sister’s birthday. She would have been 46. Almost 20 years have passed. A few weeks ago, we finally spread her ashes. My parents and I never really knew what to do with her. No place seemed like the perfect spot.

My mom suggested, since I bought the house, that maybe she’d like to be sprinkled around the in the backyard. My dad and I thought that was a great idea. I don’t know if you’ve ever spread ashes, but it was a first for me, and somehow I got nominated to open the box. That was slightly unnerving. I wasn’t sure what to expect.

If you read my blog post about her death, then you know about the mysterious feathers. To this day, feathers still appear when I need her the most and the day after we spread her ashes, she showed her approval.

See, on my way home, I got a text from my parents. The entire back patio was covered in little white feathers. Now, we’re not talking about 5, 10, 15 feathers. Literally, they were everywhere. It was a big damn deal. I watched my dad on the ring camera. He stopped in his tracks, shook his head, turned around in a circle, and just started chuckling. My mom came outside and said, “Well for heavens sakes.” We have no idea where those feathers came from (Okay, we do have a theory. There is a neighborhood hawk and a missing owl, but srsly, the timing was uncanny). We took it as a sign from her that she was happy to finally get outta that cardboard box that had been tucked away for 20 years. We had indeed found the perfect spot.

Last year was tough. Like it really sucked balls. Hence why you haven’t heard from me on social media. Lots of getting older milestones were hit. Buying this house has been nerve racking to say the least. My parents have now permanently moved to Florida. All in all, I’m adjusting. Finding my new normal. Thankful for The Boy and my kiddos.

Treated myself to a solo date in the city because it was opening weekend for @randolphmarket and the weather was gorgeous. The SUCK IT shirt got a lot of unexpected attention 😂 To the ladies (and gentlemen who chased me down, thank. You made my day.) I was lucky enough to score VIP early access so by the time the crowd rolled in, I was ready to skidaddle. Nothin’ but time on my hands, so I made my way to @design.at.329 to check out Tim’s space (@dialmformodern). With the Kennedy under construction for the last 3+ years, trips downtown have been few and far between. Also popped into @benjaminvintageanddesign, @velvetgoldminechicago, and @circamodern. Highly recommend.

Fed up with chasing algorithms, I silently quit Instagram…and social media in general. However, last night I felt compelled to share an update of my childhood home. Will you see this? Who the heck knows. But in case you missed my last update, I bought my parents house in Wisconsin….the home I grew up in. I’ve named it Devi-Bara IYKYK and have slowly decorated it the only way I know how…with weird art, killer lighting, and of course, vintage furniture. Now that we’ve moved everything into the space, it’s time to start working on the decor details…paint, upholstery fabric, wallpaper, curtains, and you guessed it, wood paneling. I’ll try my best to post and share more of this makeover madness, but IG has been really defeating. Anyhoo, I’ve tagged as many sources as possible. Most are amazing vintage shops, so hop over, say hi, and tell em I sent ya 😍 now here are the hashtags: #EclecticDecor #SecondHome #WisconsinHome #MidCenturyModernDecor #MidCenturyModern #InteriorDesignInspo

Heading up to Devi Bara this weekend with a to-do list a mile long, zero plan, and unrealistic ADHD expectations for what one human can accomplish in 48 hours. Devi Bara has been patient. The track lighting has not…its days are numbered.

Okay Devi Bara, we need to talk. This weekend’s hit list:”

✅ Strip the paint off that brick fireplace

✅ Hang the lamps

✅ Rip out the track lighting

✅ Ditch the curtains (sorry mom)

✅ Paint the walls white

Obviously I can’t do all of this in one weekend, so where should I start? Tell me what you would do first 👇

Here’s a collection I’ve never shared before 🤭🤫🫣 when I go to estate sales and vintage shops, I always keep my eyes peeled for the naughty stuff. Yes, you’ve seen the nude portraits on my walls, but these are a bit more risqué. Can you handle it? If you have innocent eyes, you might just wanna scroll on by this one. Also, if there’s one thing I know for sure, grandma and grandpa were dirty birds 😂

Last time I shared my childhood home progress, I was asked, “what did you keep.” Furniture wise? Not much. I kept the beds, TVs, plates, silverware, Tupperware. My mom is a chronic decorator (wonder where I get it from), so the furniture from way back when is long gone. I did however, keep mementos. The things that would not be important to anyone but myself. The “good” serving platter. My Cabbage Patch Kid (but I think the original is in Illinois, I need to bring it back up here along with my Care Bear. I’ll do this again when I find her and Sunshine Bear.). The old matchbooks from various Wisconsin supper clubs. I still have every single bike 🤦🏻‍♀️ those actually should go, but until the next purge, they stay. Also, this took all day to make, so you better freaking like it 😂

Jumping on this trend and using AI to turn my son’s texts into an emo song. Gotta say, it’s a bop, although he was not impressed. Hopefully you giggle like I did while putting this foul mouthed ditty together. To put a few things into context, he just got his driver’s license. To earn some gas money, he cleaned the windows inside the house, apparently my office windows were disgusting 🫣 Also, he tries his best to shock me (see the health class text). It rarely works. He asked me to be a Karen because the AC wasn’t working at school and he was hot. I tried driving our old truck up to WI the other week and thought I blew the transmission. I didn’t, but it didn’t stop his dad from teasing me. I swear that truck hates me.

Microphone check, micra microphone checka…is this thing on? I was chatting with some friends the other day, and I asked, “Am I weird? Like do I give off a weird vibe?” After the laughter subsided, and they realized I was serious, I got a resounding yes. “Srsly, what is it that I do that’s so weird?” Their answer, “I don’t know, you’re just weird.” Anyhoo, here’s a bunch of weird shit in my house. Fully embracing it.

2016 was a banger year. I was coming down from the high of my first One Room Challenge. We bought a new house - sold our old house. The kiddos were tiny. The Boy flooded the basement which resulted in a deluge of room makeovers. Everyone wanted brass chairs and rams heads. The dining room went viral. I was listening to Smallpools on repeat. (What was on heavy rotation for you?) And if you’ve been around here since the beginning of HOH, you probably remember @ihavethisthingwithpink 💕 Things were very different yet nothing has changed. What a wild ride.

Remember back in the day when I started sharing my HOH Regrets? (RIP hashtags) I kinda dropped the ball because a bunch of creators took my idea and ran with it. I got frustrated, took my vintage ball of fun and peaced out 😂 Anyhoo, I was reminiscing about the shoppe (RIP) which made me start pining away for vintage treasures I truly miss. So here’s an ode to some favorites that are long gone. Side note, did you know adults with ADHD use physical objects as external memory storage at higher rate than neurotypical people? Yup, science backed. Wonder if that’s why I can remember exactly where I purchased each of these pieces and how I styled them, but when I am hungry, I’m looking for food in the dryer but can’t remember why I’m looking in the dryer 🤔💁🏻‍♀️ Also, maybe that’s why ADHD folks tend to hoard vintage.

New vintage treasure! Okay, not true vintage but when I found this retired IKEA gem on Etsy, I knew it would paired perfectly with my dad’s old turntable and my vintage silver face receiver (that I’m obsessed with). When The Boy saw me open this little black box and turn it on, he said, “that thing is badass!” Even after it blinded him 🫣 warning, don’t look directly into this thing when you turn it on 😂 it’s hella bright. BTDubs, you know when audio nerds talk all deep about the unmatched sound of vintage speakers? Ya, it’s true. I get it now. Blondie has never sounded so good.

My last few trips out to High Point were for work. Yup, this gal got herself a job! In case you haven’t heard, I’m the @cryptonfabric content nerd. Some days I’m sitting behind a computer, and other days I get to go feral at places like @thayercoggin 👀 Every time I visit Thayer, I literally walked out of the building, twirl, throw my hands in the air, and scream, “I have the best job ever!” Big thank you to @rick_chang_lee (innovator and epic furniture designer) for the chit chat time - 3 Scorpios now bonded for life ♏️ And shout out to my co-worker Cadee, who won’t let me tag her, for is always down for a High Point adventure with a side of mischief ❤️

This room has gone through so many iterations. Pretty much everything has shifted, switched, and turned around except the brass etagere. Even the styling has remained (almost) unchanged. Right now I’m eyeing the wood dresser. I dipped my toes in the vinyl waters with a new turntable which turned in to a full on obsession with silver faced audio. The speakers have grown from tiny table top size to bigger than a toddler. Records on the floor, a vintage receiver and my friend from high school gave me his dad’s turntable. My furniture placement makes for an inferior listening experience. Did you know that was a thing? That all being said…who knows about record storage and audio cabinets? Got any suggestions? Can ya help a nerdy audiophile out?

Morning coffee thoughts: your record collection has expanded into this room, that fake ass plant has been sitting on that pedestal for 2 years without a planter. Dude, find a planter…or maybe get rid of that plant. Ya, get rid of the plant. Three pieces of art all in a row, that’s too much. You really need to swap out this rug. It was here for the blue sofa. That was a year ago. You should really rewire those cabinets. The lighting is so beautiful. “House Party” might be small but it’s mighty. You should probably reframe that to have archival glass…and do that that the tank top art you idiot. That sits in the sun every damn day. You need record storage. Do you silently judge your room and make a giant to-do list or just me?

Making headway on my childhood home in Wisconsin (I’ve named it Devi Bara). Here’s a little before and after action. Don’t blink or you might miss it. Sorry, I know you hate fast Reels, but it’s a trend, and I need to play Instagram’s algorithm game or you won’t see me at all. Especially since I took a 2 year long break.

This whole thing started without a plan. I mean, buying the house was unplanned, so why would I plan the decor? Two mortgages mean Kyla’s on a tight budget. Everything left over from the vintage shop (RIP) that I loved was loaded into a U-Haul. A few new pieces have been purchased. More on those to come.

Next up, digging a French drain around the perimeter of the house. Got some water in the basement that needs to be fixed. Ah yes, the fun part of home ownership, spending money on boring shit. Once day I’ll get to spend my money on pretty vintage pieces, but until then, here’s a progress report.

Once day I’ll get to spend my money on pretty vintage pieces, but until then, here’s a progress report.
What is the biggest design mistake? In my opinion, staying safe. I renovated the kitchen in 2019 (srsly, how was that 7 years ago). The kitchen island pushed me and the stone fabricator out of our comfort zone. When designing the space, I channelled a friend’s words. He said, “Kyla, your style is minimal by glam as fuck.” I couldn’t have described it better myself. Right down to the way I dress (last weekend I paired a Thrasher sweatshirt with a Celine bag - so me). I’ve developed a personal style. So ya, this was an all white kitchen (safe), but the island was my showstopper (the most bonkers stone with a band of brass glam). Trust me, by playing with what you love, you will develop a unique look that’s all your own.

If she wants to buy that terrible idea of a Mid-Century Modern home with the conversation pit, let her. Take her shopping at her favorite vintage shop; maybe hit the flea market.

Also, hands up if you’ve had this song on repeat 🙋🏻‍♀️ Thanks to @zeopatra for the inspo 😘
