Since the 1920s, Japan’s kissaten, quiet coffee houses rooted in slow living, became sanctuaries for reflection and culture.

By the post-war era, jazz kissa emerged: dimly lit rooms, high-fidelity vinyl, and regulars who came not to talk, but to truly listen.

I’ve always been fascinated by this world—the music, the atmosphere, the people who keep it alive. On this trip, I visited around 20 jazz kissas across Tokyo to support a fading culture and spend more time just listening.

One of my favorites was this spot in Setagaya. Opened in 1960, it stands among Tokyo’s oldest surviving jazz kissas, still filled with Showa-era charm. The current owner, once a long-time regular, took over after the previous owner passed away. He’s warm, soft-spoken and has an incredible taste in music. I loved every song he played!

John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders visited during their one and only Japan tour in 1966, and the owner still treasures that piece of history. He’s also kept decades of guest notebooks, and I even found one from 1979. Regulars drop by after work or before their night shifts to listen to a few songs. Drinks are around ¥900, coffee’s served too, and it’s non-smoking with no cover—truly truly a gem!!

Watch till the end for the magical moment✨Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, this might be the most magical hotel in Tokyo!

Out back there’s a massive Japanese garden that dates all the way back to 1878—with a 3-story pagoda from the 1300s, a 500-year-old sacred tree, koi ponds, and winding stone paths that feel straight out of a fairytale.

The coolest part? They do a Sea of Clouds show—basically a soft mist that rolls through the garden a few times a day, recreating that dreamy mountain fog vibe.

And at night, the garden lights up with 1,000+ LED bulbs, turning the whole place into a glowing wonderland.

The best part? It’s free to visit!📍Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo ホテル椿山荘東京: 2 Chome-10-8 Sekiguchi, Bunkyo City, Tokyo 112-8680, Japan

Tokyo’s lucky cat–themed vinyl jazz bar 🐱🎶

Hidden upstairs in Shinjuku, this spot has been run by a husband-and-wife team since 1979. Inside, there are 2,500+ maneki-neko (招財貓) everywhere—lining the walls, stacked in cabinets, basically watching you drink.

It’s all vinyl jazz, picked by the owner Miyazaki-san, with signed album sleeves on the walls from his time in New York back in the ’70s. Super cozy, a little quirky, and very Tokyo.

Snacks are around ¥350–¥850 (~$2–6 USD) and drinks are around ¥700 ($5 USD).

A new kind of coffee destination just opened in SoHo, NYC—and it’s not just about the caffeine. Housed inside a two-story retail flagship, the space blends the intimacy of a design library, the comfort of a lounge, and the quiet cool of a record collector’s den.

Originally known in Nashville for strong, no-fuss coffee and standout service, this NYC outpost brings that same easygoing charm—with even more design edge. A space to sip, browse, and sink in.

Downstairs, shelves stretch floor to ceiling, lined with over 1,000 curated titles spanning art, fashion, photography, and architecture—available for purchase. Coffee tables overflow with collectible monographs, while velvet armchairs and soft lighting make it feel more like a private reading room than your typical café.

Upstairs, you’ll find buttery leather sofas, analog speakers, and rows of vinyl—Ella, Miles, and Ellington included. The styling is impeccable: Japanese lanterns, raw wood, and a slow, soulful energy that invites you to linger.

I tried the sweet latte ($7) made with house-crafted syrup and the espresso tonic ($7). Both were beautifully balanced, but the tonic especially stood out—light and citrusy, thanks to a delicate aromatic spray. Perfect if you’re looking for something refreshing.

One of Tokyo’s oldest surviving jazz kissas🎷💿👵🏻

Hidden on the second floor of Kabukichō in Shinjuku, this café has been part of the city’s jazz story since the 1930s.

Originally a literary bar opened in 1938, it was reborn as a vinyl-only jazz café in 1978, now run by Yuko Kawashima, daughter of the original owner.

The space feels frozen in time. Shelves lined with vintage bottles and records, portraits of jazz legends on the wall and a mellow glow fill the room.

Yuko-san is incredibly kind and gentle. She doesn’t hear perfectly, so you might need to speak a little closer when ordering or choosing a seat.

She still switches between mono and stereo needles depending on the record, since most albums before 1960 were recorded in mono, she changes cartridges to match the groove and era. It’s the kind of analog precision that defines the true jazz kissa spirit.

The speakers fill the room with a soft, powerful hum—Miles, Coltrane, Johnny Griffin, Albert Ayler, etc. The sound feels alive, warm and imperfect in the best way.

So happy you guys liked the last post, so here’s Part 2. Follow along for more jazz cafés and listening bars around Japan 🙏☺️

NYC’s prettiest new 10,000-square-foot Greek restaurant just opened in SoHo tonight!🌙🏺🐟

This gorgeous new spot was created by Reno Christou, founder of Kyma, and James Ragonese, former Vice President of Operations at LDV Hospitality, where he oversaw acclaimed concepts like Scarpetta. Together, they’ve created a stunning space that feels like a mini escape to the Greek islands, with a sun-filled retractable glass atrium, pink velvet banquettes, warm terracotta details, multiple beautiful terraces, and an incredibly warm and welcoming team.

The menu focuses on elevated Greek seafood and share plates, with crudo, plenty of fresh seafood, and caviar-topped spanakopita.

They also offer whole fish cooked over charcoal, including branzino ($55) and pink snapper ($75 for two), as well as the Lagoustine Pasta ($60). The creative cocktail list features distinctly Greek ingredients like mastiha, xinomavro wine, and Greek yogurt.

📍 Selene: SoHo, NYC

Established in 1936 by the founder of Key Coffee, this café is a historic kissaten-style shop that preserves the refined charm of pre-war Ginza. The original building was destroyed during WWII, but rebuilt in 1947, and later reimagined into the warm, two-story café it is today.

Inside, every detail invites you to slow down.
First floor: dark wood paneling, brick fireplaces, and an old-world bar counter
Second floor: skylights, royal blue carpet, and a vintage fireplace

This visit, I ordered their signature iced coffee with milk@(¥1250) and coffee with milk (¥1160), both poured tableside with two pots—coffee in one hand, milk in the other—in perfect sync. It’s a quiet little show that feels uniquely old-school. Their house blend, brewed with a soft flannel filter (nel drip), was bold and smooth, with notes of dark chocolate, toasted caramel, and a touch of smokiness. It’s full-bodied but not bitter, with a clean, lingering finish. Expect a 30-minute to 1-hour wait during peak times.📍Tricolore: 5 Chome-9-17 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan

Hidden Café with a Shibuya Crossing View in Tokyo. Located on the 17th floor of an office building, this café offers one of the most iconic views in Tokyo — but from a spot most people don’t even realize exists. Honestly, I’ve been holding off on sharing this place for almost a year haha.

Coffee here is around $3 USD — unbelievably cheap for the view you’re getting. The vibe is calm and super chill. It’s also laptop-friendly with free Wi-Fi and plenty of outlets, so it doubles as the perfect remote work or study spot.

👉 How to find it: This is where it feels truly “hidden.” You won’t see it from the main shopping area — and there’s no big café sign. Instead, enter Shibuya Scramble Square from the B2F or 2F “Office Entrance,” look for the yellow office elevator signs, and ride straight up to the 17th floor. Step out, and the café will be on the left hand side.

Sometimes I love finding places that feel like a secret escape above the city — and this one checks every box. Definitely worth a visit if you want coffee with that Shibuya view.

A Tokyo café run by the same couple for 50+ years ☕️

It’s one of those places you’d definitely notice from the outside—muted green facade, red awning, and those little window details. Inside, warm sunlight through the arched windows and shelves lined with old red coffee tins.

Run by Junichi Miyamoto and his wife Fusako since 1968. He makes the coffee, she makes the cakes and sandwiches.

Loved the thick-cut toast with different jams and black coffee. Simple but just right!

📍Shanty, Tokyo
💴 Coffee ~ ¥550 ($3), toast ~ ¥650 ($4), morning set ¥650 ($4)
🕰️ 10am–6pm, closed Wed & Thu

Tokyo’s Classical Music Listening Café 🎼📢☕️

Inside, you’re surrounded by 12,000+ vinyl records, collected over decades by the owner, Niikura-san(新倉裕之), who is incredibly kind and welcoming.

The space is designed purely for listening: comfortable seating positioned between two front horn speakers, paired with vintage tube amplification.

Requests are always welcome. And if you’re not sure what to ask for, simply share your mood. He’ll select the perfect piece for you!

For beginners, thoughtfully curated guides like “500 Essential Classical Pieces” and “100 Must-Listen Selections” make classical music approachable and enjoyable.

The coffee is just as wonderful. ¥900 ($6 USD) for a pot (about two cups), meant to be enjoyed slowly alongside the music.

Anthony Bourdain’s “favorite bar on earth” has reopened 🍸🚇

This legendary underground dive bar once loved by Bourdain, artists, chefs, and night owls originally opened in 1996 before closing in 2007. After nearly 20 years, it has quietly reopened inside the Columbus Circle subway station.

Inside: red neon lights, punk CDs in the jukebox, random protest art, the infamous protest toilet, and Tracy, the original owner, is still there telling stories almost every night. Sometimes there’s even live jazz performances by musicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center.

📍Siberia (inside the Turnstyle underground market near Columbus Circle)
💵 Cash only

Climbing the mirrored red-carpet staircase in Soho, this spot feels like stepping onto a 1970s movie set—sultry, cinematic, and impossibly chic. The second floor has a bar and small tables for walk-ins, but the third floor is where the magic happens: a wood-paneled lounge with velvet loveseats, arch chairs, and a $45 per person minimum. I went for a pre-dinner drink months ago—scallop crudo was a solid 9/10 and my cocktail around 7.5/10. Service was amazing throughout—attentive but never overbearing, 10/10. Overall, it’s a seductive escape perfect for date nights, girls’ night, and late-night snaps.

Tokyo’s hidden underground kissaten in Kichijoji that feels straight out of a Ghibli scene.

Opened in 1979 by members of a puppet theatre troupe, this cave-like café has lived quietly beneath the street for decades. It originally served as a quiet working and resting space for troupe members between shows and rehearsals.

Their classic curry rice set (¥2,000) is the cutest, simmered with more than 10 spices. Their coffee beans are French-roasted, aged for at least two years, and hand-dripped to order.

📍 Coffee Hall Kugutsusō / COFFEE HALL くぐつ草
🍛 Curry set: ¥2,000 (~$13 USD), Curry alone is ¥1,400
☕️ Coffee: ¥870 (~$6 USD)

NYC’s Stunning New Moroccan Restaurant 🇲🇦🐆🏺

Just opened in SoHo by the Maison Close team — velvet booths, carved archways, glowing lanterns, and luxe Moroccan details everywhere. Service is next-level too. Huge shout-out to Camille and Gabriel for being so warm and attentive.

Cocktails
🍸 Dellah $26: Jasmine tea mojito with loads of mint and a fragrant tea aroma (8/10)
🍹 Kammun $26: Tangy and acidity-forward with a bright cumin-spice taste and creamy foam (9/10)

Food
🐟 Black Cod Tagine $42: Served bubbling in a clay tagine; buttery, delicate, aromatic, bathed in saffron-ginger-preserved lemon sauce — one of the best dishes I’ve had in NYC this year!! (12/10)
🍚 Couscous Royal $46: Couscous topped with beef chunks, lamb meatballs, merguez sausages and a rainbow of veggies (squash, zucchini, carrots, turnips); comforting yet refined (8/10)
🥩 Lamb Shank $59: Braised with Moroccan spices. Exterior could be softer but still fragrant and satisfying (7/10)
🥕 Chhiwat Tower $48: A tall tower of Moroccan dips and salads. Fun presentation but mostly soft/puréed textures except for the carrots. After a couple of bites it can feel repetitive — skippable unless you’re a group looking to sample everything (6/10)
🍰 Pasicilla $16: Layers of thin, crispy pastry with orange blossom cream and tart raspberry on top — like a Moroccan mille-feuille (7/10)

Overall Rating
🐟 Food: 8/10
🍹 Drinks: 8.5/10
🛎️ Service: 10/10
