Torches were lit, shields bearing the names of the fallen were laid on the ground, and illumination rounds were fired into the fog. Now as I continue to write he is in Sevilla at the bull fights. And by the time you read this tomorrow, he will be on his way back to Ukraine. And I’m quite sure in a month’s time I’ll see him at our clockwork biannual meeting in the piazza outside of Fortezza da Basso in Florence. Pitti Uomo being the pause button on his coverage of conflicts around the world. I just completed the Copenhagen Marathon this morning. My first and likely my last. I wore a lot of technical fabrics, but I wore a wool t-shirt, and I only realize this now as I’m writing, but… wait listen to this story. I run nearly every morning in Florence. I invite people to join. Now that running is “cool”, we are a large group meeting up to taste pennies at dawn. Back when I invited Robbie to run, we were two. Robert arrives at the medieval meeting point wearing a gray cashmere crewneck sweater, some very short shorts, and I believe, Converse. I give him a “what the actual fuck” look, most likely followed by a “what the actual fuck” exclamation. He spoke of wicking, odor-resistance, and US Marine Corps standard issue. I spoke of impact, knee injuries, and the difference between athletics and aesthetics. We ran up the hill together.
