Best way to level up your creative taste is by browsing Pinterest whilst watching old cinema. I call it taste maxing.

I once saw a picture online that inspired this, but I can’t find it now.

Over consumption of content is crazy, imagine getting to the stage where people are now demonstrating against viral content by making it unsearchable like what’s happen on the TikTok Farlands right now.

I can’t lie, this single style of photography has had a choke hold on me for the last 10 years. Somehow, I only recently found out about Hiromix and he work.

Honestly, I have no background in graphic design, most of my process comes from making endless mood boards on Pinterest whilst streaming anything David Attenborough narrates in the background.

Okay so since becoming a dad i don’t go raves any longer, but I swear I was deeply embedded in that scene back in the day.

I have a deep DEEP love for prints ad from the late 90s and early 2000s - there was something so over the top in their copy and imagery.

We need this level of literal metaphors back in our life.

There is a innate human desire to extract, to identify the most potent element, and refine it optimise it and reused it.

It was once a great survival trait and took us from tribes to organised settlements.

But the modern era and our vices turns this into hyper extraction, deforestation, species extinction and most recently individual human traits that can be commercialised and sold.

Alysa has an incredible story, but let’s not forget we are dealing with a young human being. I can only imagine how hard her rapid ascension to fame, can be on the soul.

The halo effect supercharged the advertising industry in the age of flow television, however its power still exists and might just be more relevant than ever if used properly.

I’m a firm believer that good ads, when cleverly written can move people - I still remember ads from my childhood. This is in part because of how they were written but even more so, because of the halo effect. The combination of the two is powerful.

Which is why @wearemntn is worth understanding, not only as a marketer, but even more as a creative.

Tell me I’m not the only one who has been seeing these photos for the past few years. I mean come on, this goes so HARD, if it didn’t mean I had to participate in my own funeral and sign up for monastic celibacy this would 100% be the squads outfit.

Everything aside, this is a stunning case study in preservation and perseverance, not to mention an awesome piece of inspiration to dive into.

I urge you to research what you find interesting, go down the rabbit hole.

You may or may not like this, but research is one of the most powerful tools in your toolkit.

Coming up with good ideas and being creative is driven by intuition and fuelled by research, insight and knowledge.

Two do my favourite books on research and the creative process are:

A Technique for Producing Ideas, by James Webb Young. Talks about a five step process for generating really powerful ideas, and various other creative techniques.

Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity, by Derek Thompson, reflects on the turning points for content distribution, psychology of popularity (going viral) and really interesting network effect of dark broadcasts.
