If someone told me they’re moving to Bali without a plan, I’d tell them this: 1) you’ll never be fully welcome here as a foreigner. Don’t get me wrong on that one, Indonesian people are super nice and balinese people are the sweetest ever, but there is a clear line between tourists or expats and locals 2) do some effort and learn about the culture. You’re moving your existence to a new country and a very special island with its own beliefs and culture so learning about it to understand what’s happening around you is the bare minimum. Learning the language also is part of it but a lot of foreigners - including myself I have to say - don’t prioritize this as everybody speaks english which leads to number 3 … 3) In popular tourist areas, life is happening in english completely. It took me a few weeks to realize this but all sports classes I went to for example were held in english - there wasn’t even a thought that they could be in Bahasa Indonesia. Isn’t that weird? They should be in indonesian language so people actually have to do an effort to learn the language. Thoughts? 4) don’t try and learn how to ride a scooter in Bali. This is something I say every single time but unless you’re going to the very west of Bali where there is nothing, just don’t get on a bike for the first time here. But then also, without being able to ride a bike you’ll always be very dependent and while there are apps such as Gojek and Grab where you can order rides, it’s not the same freedom & flexibility 5) Health care in Bali is EXPENSIVE. If you get into an accident and don’t have a good health insurance, you’ll have a problem. Make sure to get a proper insurance and not just the cheapest one on the market. Mine is amazing so far and I never had any problems. If someone told me they’re moving to Bali without a plan, I’d tell them this: 1) you’ll never be fully welcome here as a foreigner. This of course depends on the area you want to stay in as well as your living standards but let’s just say my mom pays less per month fir a 4 bedroom apartment in a big city in Germany than a 1 bedroom villa costs monthly in one of the popular areas if Bali (Canggu, Seminyak, Seseh & Uluwatu) 2) The food is amazing but somehow everyone gets sick or has some sort of stomach issues when living here. It doesn’t have anything to do with “western or local” food, people just get sick. Having a parasite for example is something almost everyone who lives in Bali has experienced at least once. 3) Don’t move to Bali if a gecko scares you 😂 they are everywhere, yes even in expensive hotels, villas and resorts, and you have to learn to live with them. They are harmless and actually eat all the stuff you probably like even less than a gecko 🕷️so appreciate them 4) if you decide to live in Canggu or Uluwatu you’ll realize that everyone (or almost) is into fitness and that these places are a hub for hot and shredded people. Amazing and motivating but can also be a killer for self confidence sometimes. With a sixpack you’re nothing special here, it’s average 5) Health care in Bali is EXPENSIVE. There are a lot of things I also miss about living there. Posted a Reel on that a few weeks ago, you’ll find it on my account @aylinkko But let’s get into a few of my reasons of leaving: 1) working culture - life is fully centered around work. After work people do their groceries if they have the energy and then mostly just get home and crash until they leave for work again the next day. Weekend? Household duties, other adult responsibilities and catch up with friends. Sunday after 12pm? People start complaining that monday is around the corner This wouldn’t be the case if more people really loved what they were doing but most of them don’t. Because they aren’t given the time to figure out what kind of job would truly fulfill them and just start the next best thing that makes good money 2) the weather - as much as I love having four seasons, I am a summer & sunshine person. I had really bad winter depression for the last years I lived in Germany and even with medication, light therapy etc 6/12 months per year were really hard and unenjoyable for me 3) the opportunities - you finish school or uni and then look on platforms which “box” fits you best. I kept scrolling and scrolling and not a single job description felt like a match and apart from that, even with a good masters degree in finance (top 15%) it’s hard to get a job if you didn’t commit extra time during your studies for more certifications, more internships and more volunteer work. Then you get pressure for wasting time because “how will that look on your CV?” 4) people - because so many people spent their lives working jobs that don’t make them happy, they feel exhausted, complain a lot and can be unfriendly. Also, people don’t like to see others having big goals in life. They like to see you do well but never better than them There’s more but my signs here are limited.
