Palm trees overlooking the water. It felt Mediterranean, almost cinematic. The day we visited there was a steampunk event on which made it even more surreal. Full costumes, music drifting through the village, such a fun atmosphere. They host events throughout the year so it’s always worth checking what’s on before you go. It wasn’t built to copy Italy, but it was heavily inspired by Italian and Mediterranean architecture. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis began creating it in 1925 to prove that colourful, theatrical design could sit beautifully within nature rather than damage it. Every building was carefully positioned to frame the estuary and protect the woodland around it. There’s an entrance fee for day visitors, or you can stay overnight and experience it once it goes quiet. It’s named after Jane Austen, who spent time here and set scenes from Persuasion in this town. 🌊 Walk The Cobb **Currently closed** A historic seawall with sweeping views along the coastline, and one of the most iconic spots linked to Persuasion. πŸͺ¨ Explore Charmouth & the South West Coast Path Part of the Jurassic Coast and perfect for a slow seaside walk with incredible scenery. πŸ¦• Spot fossils at Monmouth Beach Fossils from millions of years ago are scattered through the rocks. Tucked away on the North Devon coast, this historic fishing village is known for its steep cobbled streets, flower-covered cottages and a small working harbour that’s been here for centuries. **Save for a future trip** πŸ“ Location at the end πŸ“ @amyenvoyage for more UK travel inspiration I was visiting the Peak District when I saw a photo of a cable car rising over a limestone gorge and I genuinely didn’t think it looked like somewhere in the UK. So while I was close by, I had to go and see it for myself. At the top is the Heights of Abraham, which first opened to visitors back in 1787. Long before the alpine-style cable car arrived over 40 years ago, people would’ve had to walk all the way up. Now you can ride up for views right across the valley, explore old lead mining caverns inside the hillside, wander the woodland paths and even catch a traditional Punch and Judy show in summer. But that’s only half the story. For centuries, this place has been known for its natural thermal springs and their health benefits, the water still flows at around 20Β°C, shaping the village’s spa heritage. And somehow, even though it’s nowhere near the coast, it feels like a seaside town. Arcades, fish and chips, ice cream, boats on the river. Did you know the UK has rainforests? 🌿 This is one of the UK’s rare temperate rainforests. These rainforests are incredibly rare, covering less than 1 percent of land in the UK and only a tiny fraction of forest types worldwide. I’d wanted to visit one for such a long time, so when I was back in Devon visiting my family I finally made it here and took my mum with me. We had the nicest walk, moving slowly, watching the wildlife and taking in just how green and alive everything felt. Temperate rainforests form because of constant rainfall, mild temperatures and moisture rich air. That steady damp allows mosses, ferns and lichens to grow over everything, not just the forest floor. Many of these rainforests are thousands of years old, developing gradually since the last Ice Age. Only small pockets now remain mainly in the South West, parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, and along the west coast of Scotland. I loved being able to step inside homes, chat to the costumed characters, explore historic shops, ride the vintage fairground and even go down a mine. It made British history so much more interesting than I ever expected. The museum takes you through 250 years of history, with areas spanning the 1790s to the 1960s, so there’s loads to explore. Some of my highlights: 🧼 Wandering through the cast iron homes with floral wallpaper and black and white TVs. 🎢 Browsing records in the 1950s shop. 🍬 Buying sweets that reminded me of childhood. 🏫 Watching Luke nearly get the cane in the Edwardian classroom (don’t worry, no Lukes were harmed πŸ˜‚). 🍟 Eating proper fish and chips fried in beef dripping and wrapped in paper. 🎑 Exploring the vintage fairground with penny slots, a ghost train and traditional gallopers. ⛏️ Going underground to experience what life was like working in a Victorian coal mine. You might recognise it without realising, it’s been used as the filming location for Doc Martin (as Port Wenn), and also features in the Fisherman’s Friends films. It’s also home to one of the narrowest passageways in the UK, just 18 inches wide 🀯 We didn’t find it this time, but it’s definitely on the list for our next visit.
