It saddens me that it has to come to this but a full exposé is in order… Third‑party testing revealed Vital Farms’ eggs are about 23.5% linoleic acid, similar to or higher than canola oil on a percentage basis. Testing conducted by @nourishfoodclub But the real story here is a Wall Street takeover. The company started as a single Austin pasture with 20 hens, selling expensive truly pasture-raised eggs directly to local buyers. But everything changed in 2020 when the company went public. Today some of Vital Farms major shareholders are the likes of BlackRock, Vanguard, and Amazon. Where the noble mission of farm to table eggs turns into a profit equation. VF today? - Fed on corn and soy: cheap inputs - Yolks artificially colored darker - Pasture-Raised yes…but not necessarily regenerative/rotated to fresh pastures Are these better than most grocery store eggs? Yes. But the problem comes when consumers pay a premium for something you can’t back up: - cutesy packaging - darker yolks presented to be higher quality - bold marketing claims like “BS Free” Then when lab results come through…it tells a different story. VF a $1B+ company calls me a BS influencer for calling them out with facts yet can’t explain why consumers are concerned. This problem goes so much deeper than Vital Farms: it is the industrial food complex of Big Ag that subsidizes production of corn and soy + PE that optimizes for profits above all. My suggestion for us as consumers: get closer to the source. Ask about feeds, pasture rotation, etc…

This is a side of the food system that is not pretty right now… The AI revolution requires hyperscale data centers that drain community resources and take up valuable land that could be used for food production. Regenerating the land requires resources as well but sites like this one in Saline sold at roughly 5-7x the fair market value it would as regular farmland. A lawn is a way of saying, “I’m so wealthy I can waste productive land on decoration.” The first push mower in 1870 transformed what had been an aristocratic luxury into the expectation that every homeowner should maintain a trimmed grass yard. And we haven’t really looked back despite this making zero sense compared to actually having self-sufficient food supplies. The real flex is using your land to have a garden, fruit trees, chicken coop, etc… Grow as much of your food on your own. Buy what you can’t grow from small farmers. Coincidentally, it also has the second-highest childhood cancer rate of any county in California. At 22.5 childhood cancers per 100,000 children, the rate is more than 38% above the statewide average of 16.3. Over 5,060 acres of pesticides linked to those same cancers are sprayed in the Pajaro Valley every year to grow 40% of California’s strawberries. Worst of all, it’s often next to schools and homes where children spend most of their time. According to the latest data, over 2,000,000 pounds of pesticides were applied just in this school district’s area alone. Driscoll’s is reported to apply two together: 1. 1,3-D: fumigant used to sterilize the soil, officially listed by the state as a carcinogen, causes tumors in multiple animal studies 2. Chloropicrin: originally deployed as a chemical weapon in World War I, so toxic that it kills or disables test animals before scientists can even evaluate its long-term carcinogenicity But yeah it’s probably just a coincidence all the kids are getting cancer? This is why you need to be buying local and seasonal fruit. Do not trust major corporations to do the right thing for our food or health.
