20 years ago today, #Shakira released “Hips Don’t Lie” featuring #WyclefJean. Shakira’s seventh studio album, ‘Oral Fixation, Vol. 2,’ was already for sale when “Hips Don’t Lie” was introduced to the era. In early 2006, the album was pulled from store shelves to repackage it including the new single, a decision that may have altered the trajectory of the songstress’ career. The track blends Latin pop, reggaeton and salsa and was met with praise from music critics. It became a globe-conquering smash hit, topping charts in 16 countries and reaching the top 10 in countless others. In the United States, it broke the record for the most-played pop song in a single week in US radio history, and became her first No. 1 single on the Hot 100. The track more than doubled the points of the No. 2 song that week, making it one of the most dominant No. 1s of the past 30 years. It went on to earn six VMA nominations, winning for Best Choreography, as well as being nominated for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the #Grammys. “Hips Don’t Lie” is now the most-streamed song by a female artist of the 2000s decade on Spotify (with over 2.37 billion plays) and has been ranked among the best pop songs of all time by various publications. The single somehow elevated Shakira’s status even higher. Already a certified global icon, it further solidified her as one of the all-time greats.

#ZaraLarsson has condemned ICE and the criminalization of drugs in newly shared Stories. She first posted: “I love immigrants I love criminals I love trans people I love abortions I love queers I love slutty women I love contraception I love welfare I love socialism I f**king hate ICE” The star then followed up with another Story after receiving messages from people saying that she was defending criminals. She explained that many people with criminal records have past drug charges, like her boyfriend who is barred from entering the United States because of a record over weed. “I’m just saying there’s thousands and thousands of people who go to jail and prison over none violent crimes like drugs, mostly black and brown people because of Ronald Reagan being racist in the 80s and f**king up communities,” Zara shared before finishing with a strong message: “Idk about yall but I’d rather have someone smoking crack on my couch than a f**king ICE agent ewwwwwwwww. They’re criminals too. Killing, kidnapping, violent, hateful ones.”

8 years ago today, #ArianaGrande released “no tears left to cry.” Ariana Grande returned with her heart on her sleeve in 2018, releasing “no tears left to cry” as the lead single from her fourth studio album, ‘Sweetener.’ The soaring dance-pop track combined a UK garage beat with a message of resilience and strength: Grande working through the hardships of the year prior. It was met with widespread critical acclaim, both for its message and Grande’s vocal performance. The single was accompanied by a Dave Meyers-directed music video, lauded as one of her best at the time, which paid subtle homage to the city of Manchester. The track was both an artistic and commercial triumph for the singer-songwriter, debuting at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and tying “Problem” for her highest debut on the chart to date. It topped charts in various countries worldwide and ranked among the top 10 biggest songs of 2018 in the UK. Beyond its commercial success, “no tears left to cry” as a whole is now viewed as a landmark moment in the pop star’s storied career.

3 years ago today, #PinkPantheress released “Boy’s a liar Pt. 2” with #IceSpice. The original “Boy’s a Liar” was released in November 2022 to critical acclaim and was later included on PinkPantheress’ EP ‘Take Me Home.’ It began to gain traction online and so in January of 2023, she reached out to Ice Spice to ask her to appear on a remix. “I didn’t want it to just be a song that passed on by,” she said of the idea, “I wanted to culturally, like, stamp this song into [2023].” Spice accepted, and the remix was released on February 3rd. Pink’s motivation behind the remix was clearly well-founded: it was met with equal praise from music critics and quickly exploded on the charts. It debuted at No. 14 on the Hot 100 and the next week became both artists’ first top 10 hit — eventually peaking at No. 3. The track was accompanied by a bubbly visual filmed in New York City, helping to propel it even further commercially (it has amassed over 278 million views on YouTube). “Boy’s a Liar” wound up as the 20th biggest song of 2023 in the United States — numerical evidence of its cultural stamp on the year. It served as the breakout mainstream hit for the two then-rising stars and remains one of the most memorable pop collaborations of the decade.

11 years ago today, #LittleMix released “Black Magic.” Little Mix kicked off the ‘Get Weird’ era with “Black Magic” - a boisterous pop track released as the album’s lead single. The group teased the track in February 2015 by confirming that they had selected the first single for their upcoming album and described it as a “whole new sound” compared to their past work. The song’s title was then accidentally revealed by Leigh-Anne’s mother on Twitter in April, a month before its announcement and release, when she shared the hashtag #MixersAreExcitedForBlackMagic. On May 21, 2015, “Black Magic” was released to both critical acclaim and commercial success. Reviewers praised its 80s influenced-sound and catchy nature, with The Huffington Post even naming it “one of the best pop releases of the year.” A week later, an accompanying theatrical music video was released - another new direction for the quartet. The single debuted at No. 1 in the UK, becoming Little Mix’s third chart topper, and spent three weeks at the summit. It has since been certified 4x Platinum in the country and is one of the group’s most successful singles worldwide, having amassed over 800 million streams on Spotify and more than 1.1 billion views on YouTube.

#CynthiaErivo has been reunited with her lost hat after a year. The star forgot the headpiece after the #Wicked premiere in London a year ago and had not been able to locate it since. In what has become a majorly viral video, a fan at the Paris premiere for #WickedForGood met #Cynthia and informed her that she had found the hat and kept it. Arrangements were then made for the fan to bring it to London and Cynthia has at long last been reunited with it. “You’re amazing, thank you for doing that,” Cynthia told the fan. “Thank you for holding onto it as well. It means a lot, thank you. You brilliant person!”

15 years ago today, Selena Gomez & The Scene released “Love You Like A Love Song.” Released on June 17, 2011 as a digital download, “Love You Like A Love Song” served as the second single from the band’s third studio album, ‘When The Sun Goes Down.’ The track is a midtempo dance-pop banger that explores the feelings of falling in love. It was initially met with mixed reviews from music critics, but has since become one of the most beloved early 2010s pop classics and a signature hit for Gomez. Commercially, the single reached the top 10 in Canada and the top 20 in Norway, Belgium, Brazil, Lebanon, Mexico and France. It also reached No. 22 on the US Hot 100, marking the band’s second highest-peaking song - just one spot below “Who Says.” The chart life of the song was enduring; it spent 38 weeks on the Hot 100 chart and has amassed over 830 million views on YouTube. Dubbed a “cult karaoke classic” by Pitchfork in 2017 (fitting for its music video), the 6x Platinum-certified smash now stands as a timeless pop classic with a healthy dose of nostalgia. #selenagomez #throwback #selenators #popmusic #reels

#ZaraLarsson has followed up further after receiving backlash over her Stories condemning ICE. The star originally shared a post that ended with “I f**king hate ICE,” to which she received messages from people laccusing her of supporting criminals. She first responded by discussing the criminalization of drugs and explaining that many people have criminal records over recreational drug use: “Idk about yall but I’d rather have someone smoking crack on my couch than a f**king ICE agent ewwwwwwwww. They’re criminals too. Killing, kidnapping, violent, hateful ones.” The next day, she took to her Stories once more: “Tr*mp supporters are suuuuper upset with me saying I love criminals when referring to my boyfriend and the silliness of him even technically being that for smoking a joint according to Swedish law lol. But... they voted for one... with 34 felonies... to become... the president?”

16 years ago today, #LadyGaga released “Telephone” featuring #Beyoncé. #Gaga originally wrote “Telephone” for #BritneySpears, intending for it to be on her 2008 album ‘Circus.’ Spears, however, rejected the track so Gaga kept it for ‘The Fame Monster’ and secured Beyoncé as a feature. It was released as the second single from the EP on January 26th, 2010 and was later accompanied by a short film music video. The track itself was reviewed positively by music critics, with praise targeted particularly towards its structure and production. Commercially, “Telephone” continued Gaga’s uninterrupted run of hit singles. It reached No. 1 in numerous countries, including the United Kingdom, and peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100. At the end of the year, the IFPI named it the 4th best-selling song of 2010 worldwide and in 2017, it was certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA. The Grammy-nominated track is now hailed as one of the greatest collaborations in pop history: a tour de force between two 21st century titans that remains referenced and acclaimed in today’s landscape. And fans are still pining for part two.

7 years ago today, #ArianaGrande & #VictoriaMonét released “MONOPOLY.” “MONOPOLY” was born from the longtime friendship between Ariana Grande & Victoria Monét, who had been working together for years. Titled due to Monét’s dislike for the board game, the R&B-trap-pop track is a carefree celebration of “friendship, freedom, protecting your energy and staying right in your bag,” according to Grande. It was released on April 1st 2019 to celebrate “7 rings” spending an 8th week atop the Hot 100 and was accompanied by a DIY-esque music video filmed just two days prior. Brimming with memes and references to their own careers, the playful track even makes reference to “7 rings” and its “My Favorite Things” sample, with Grande singing “Even though we gave up that 90% for the win.” Though not intended for mainstream success and billed simply as “a thank u to them fans,” “MONOPOLY” still managed to make some chart impact. It reached the top 20 in Ireland, Lithuania and New Zealand, and peaked at No. 23 in the UK. A fun way to cap off a wildly successful album cycle.

2 years ago today, #OliviaRodrigo released “obsessed.” “Obsessed” was originally included as a bonus track on a special color vinyl variant of Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album, ‘GUTS,’ having not made the cut for the standard edition of the record. It was one of several hidden bonus tracks, however, in 2024, Rodrigo performed it on the ‘GUTS’ world tour, helping the track to go viral online. On March 22, 2024, she released the deluxe edition of the album, dubbed ‘GUTS (spilled),’ and promoted “obsessed” as the focus track. The pop-punk banger displays a more crazed, grittier side to the star, detailing her infatuation with her current partner’s ex-girlfriend. It was praised by critics for its edge - especially in comparison to her past work. Rodrigo released a music video to accompany the song, during which she performs at a beauty pageant comprising her partner’s exes — an “Exes Gala” — helping to drive home the track’s hysteria. Commercially, the single performed well. It debuted and peaked at No. 10 on the Official UK Singles Chart, becoming Rodrigo’s 8th top 10 hit in the country, while also reaching the top 20 in Australia, Canada, Ireland and the United States. With over 335 million plays on Spotify, it is firmly the most-streamed deluxe track from the album.

3 years ago today, Tate McRae released “greedy.” Tate McRae shifted gears with “greedy.” The track was inspired by an encounter with a man at a bar who told her he found her mysterious; she agreed. “greedy” was thus birthed from a place of confidence and self-assurance, a rather stark contrast to her music up to that point. She crafted the song with Ryan Tedder, Amy Allen, and Jasper Harris, and told Apple Music that the first version of it was “absolute trash.” While Tate hated it, Ryan loved it and played it relentlessly for her at the beginning of studio sessions. Eventually, Tate conceded and told herself, “This song is either a big single with a big dance video and I go full pop girl, and I go fully that direction. Or I’m not putting it on the album.” “greedy” arrived on September 15th 2023 as the lead single from her sophomore album, ‘THINK LATER,’ equipped with a choreography-filled video set in no less than a hockey rink. It marked perhaps the beginning of her transition from moody singer-songwriter into full pop diva. The track quickly took off and found itself a globe-conquering hit. It became her first No. 1 hit in her native Canada, and also topped charts in Austria, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Malaysia and more. In the US, the song climbed as high as No. 3 on the Hot 100 (her first top 10 hit) and has since been certified 5x Platinum. “greedy” now sits at over 2.3 billion streams on Spotify. #tatemcrae #popmusic #throwback #reels

7 years ago today, #TaylorSwift released “ME!” featuring #BrendonUrie. Taylor Swift kicked off her ‘Lover’ era with the release of “ME!,” a bombastic, colorful celebration of self-love and self-acceptance. She called upon the frontman of Panic! At The Disco for an all-singing, all-dancing lead-off for her seventh studio album. The track arrived in stark contrast to the darker themes and aesthetic of her previous album, ‘reputation,’ symbolised through the iconic snake combusting into butterflies at the beginning of its music video. Critics were divided on the track: some found it endearing and cheerful, appreciating its uplifting nature, while others labeled it corny and immature. Nonetheless, it made a huge splash on the charts upon its release. The music video broke the VEVO record for the most views in 24 hours with 65.2 million plays in its first day, and the single broke a slew of Amazon Music records at the time. Over on the Hot 100, it debuted at No. 100 due to strong early airplay. The next week, it catapulted to No. 2, breaking the record for the biggest single-week upward movement in the chart’s history in the process, only to be blocked from the top by Lil Nas X’s mammoth “Old Town Road.” The single reached the top 10 in over 20 countries worldwide. “ME!” received less award show recognition than Swift’s previous singles, though its visual was a heavy hitter during MTV’s 2019 cycle. It won Best Video at the EMAs, Best Visual Effects at the VMAs and Best Female International Artist Video at the Japan VMAs. The single may have been less of a triumph than expected from a Taylor Swift comeback, but it was by no means a flop; it is now approaching 1 billion streams on Spotify.

10 years ago today, #FifthHarmony released “Work From Home” featuring #TyDollaSign. Fifth Harmony had achieved mainstream chart success after their stint on The X Factor with their debut album ‘Reflection’ and the single “Worth It.” In 2016, however, they were ready to take things to the next level, and “Work From Home” was the perfect song to do so. An undeniable pop smash packed with innuendos, the track blends in elements of R&B and attracted the group due to its “laid-back” and “chill” feel. It was originally titled “Work” and set for release at the end of January, but plans were altered after Rihanna dropped her smash hit of the same name that month. They subsequently regrouped, and on February 24, 2016, they announced the title “Work From Home” and the song followed two days later, bolstered by a Ty Dolla $ign feature, as the lead single from the ‘7/27’ album. The song was met with praise from music critics and quickly became a huge commercial success. It debuted at No. 12 on the Hot 100, marking the group’s highest debut and matching the all-time peak of “Worth It” on the chart, before peaking at No. 4. This made Fifth Harmony the first girl group to score a top 5 hit on the chart in a decade - the most recent being The Pussycat Dolls with “Buttons” in 2006. “Work From Home” also achieved international success, reaching No. 1 in the Netherlands, No. 2 in the UK, No. 3 in Australia and the top 10 in a plethora of other countries. Now certified multi-Platinum in 13 countries, it is undoubtedly the defining song of the quintet’s career.
