He is known for heartbreaking and incredibly powerful works of fiction that explore memory, connection, self-deception and emotional repression. Next year, he publishes his new book, Miss Lambert Steps Aboard Danger. His most recent novel, the beloved Klara and the Sun, has been adapted into a new film by Taika Waititi, released in cinemas today and starring Jenna Ortega. Set in the near future, in a world where children are genetically edited to be more intelligent, it tells the story of Klara - an artificial friend bought as a companion for a teenage girl who is ill. It feels incredibly prescient, looking at loneliness in the era of AI and what it means to be human and to love. It was a total honour to speak to Ish about his own favourite books, from cult classics to living with The Count of Monte Cristo.
