But if someone wants a fluoride-free toothpaste, hydroxyapatite is no longer something I would dismiss as wellness marketing. And toothpaste isn’t just about fluoride vs hydroxyapatite. Those bacteria help convert nitrate → nitrite → nitric oxide, which plays an important role in blood pressure regulation. Some studies have shown small increases in blood pressure after suppressing these bacteria. That doesn’t mean everyone using mouthwash will develop high blood pressure, but it does challenge the idea that killing as much oral bacteria as possible is always a good thing.
