📰 Cult-Favorite Dessert Duo Preparing Second Location in Meyerland 🆕 Houston favorites @UndergroundCreamery — known for its limited weekly flavor “drops” — and @PudgysFineCookies are expanding their partnership with a second location at Meyerland Court at 4798 Beechnut. Opening in August, it builds on the years-long collaboration between the two businesses. The new space will be larger than the original at 1010 North Shepherd, and will include indoor seating. Van Teamer, owner of Pudgy’s Fine Cookies, and Josh DeLeon, owner of Underground Creamery, say the expansion reflects a philosophy that independent businesses can achieve more by working together. 🍪 “It’s the best of both worlds,” said Teamer. “We each have our own businesses and creative freedom, but we also get to share ideas, support one another and celebrate each other’s wins. Even though we’re doing our own thing, we’re working toward the same goal of creating a great experience for our community and helping each other succeed.” 🍦 Guests can expect Pudgy’s signature cookies and cookie sundaes alongside the debut of Underground Softies, soft-serve ice cream from Underground Creamery. The business’s limited-edition flavors have developed a devoted following. (Some recent selections include Malted Peanut Butter Specula and Death Road — Valrhona chocolate ice cream with candied pecans and vanilla bean marshmallow fluff.) The weekly releases, announced via text message to subscribers and sold at the Underground Creamery website, frequently sell out. However, DeLeon says that soft-serve will have a “less dynamic” menu. Guests will still have options for creative toppings — and naturally, plenty of cookie and ice cream combos. 🤝 “It’s been such a great arrangement,” said DeLeon. “I think more people should do it if they feel like it’ll work. Of course there are boundaries and everyone has to be on the same page, but sharing knowledge has helped both of us grow faster than I ever imagined.” 🎉 Grand opening celebrations and exclusive collaborations will be announced soon. ✍️ @PhaedraCook 📸 @EmilyWalling #HoustonNews #FoodNews #HoustonFood #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonBusiness

Fresh off chef @chefevelyngarcia’s appearance on @FoodNetwork’s “Beat Bobby Flay,” another James Beard Award-winning Houston chef is taking him on. Chef Thomas Bille (@ChefThomas812) of Belly Of The Beast (@BOTBFood) appears on the “Mole Mania” episode on Tuesday, August 4 at 7 p.m. Central. 🚨 Coming Soon: Justin Yu (@tetsujustin) and @BobbyHeugel to Open House of Louie (@HouofLouie) in Montrose 🤝 James Beard Award-winning chef Justin Yu and Bobby Heugel of Thorough Fare Co. are bringing a new neighborhood restaurant to Montrose later this summer. Called House of Louie, the restaurant will open at 1931 Fairview, taking over the former Vibrant space (previously the original McGowan Cleaners). Yu said via a press release that the concept is named after the California restaurant his aunts Betty Louie and Josephine Yeun founded in 1981. It was also where he got his first restaurant job bussing tables, washing dishes and scooping rainbow sherbet. 👨🏽‍🍳 @kirk0hbangz formerly of Leo’s River Oaks and One Fifth, will lead the kitchen as executive chef and coordinate with Yu on the menu. Expect takes on French and Italian dishes “flanked by the smirk of Modern American cooking”. 🍝 Some of the already-revealed dishes are Fried Lasagna with ragu bianco and Comté cheese fondue, Yellowtail Alla Scapece, Spot Shrimp with Patis and Fennel, Maison Louie Salad and Duck With Chartreuse. 🍸 General Manager Tyler Jay Wang, whose background includes Boston’s acclaimed No. 9 Park and Drink, will oversee a beverage program encompassing classic cocktails, seasonal house creations, martinis (“always served as cold as possible”) and a roughly 60-bottle wine list. Bobby Heugel (owner of Anvil, Refuge, Donna’s and more) will also provide oversight for the bar program. 🌳 The former Vibrant has been refreshed while preserving its elevated design and lush greenery. 🪄 “House of Louie was how I fell in love with restaurants. There was a magic there,” said Yu. “It was always a happy place for me, and for all its guests who came from all around the Los Angeles area to go to it. It was just one of those restaurants where it was exactly what you wanted, when you wanted it, but also a restaurant that gave you more than you expected. I can’t wait to share that in Houston, the city I’ve grown up in, returned to, made my life in and which inspires me daily.” ✍️ @PhaedraCook 📸 @kirstengilliamphotography

📰 Closed Sushi Restaurant in The Woodlands is Getting a New Life ➡️ After closing their longtime restaurant, @therealunisushi at Market Street in The Woodlands in late January, owners Angel Barragan and Rosie Izaguirre have announced that it is reopening at 7 Switchbud Place at Grogan’s Mill Village Center (@grogansmilltwtx). 📆 The new Uni Sushi is expected to open next year. 👨‍🍳 If you haven’t yet experienced executive chef Christian Hernandez’s cuisine at @BarbacanaHTX at 907 Franklin in @DowntownHouston, I highly recommend visiting. Hernandez brings talent honed at top Houston restaurants such as Oxheart, Pax Americana and, more recently, MARCH. I recently visited with my friend @JohnFrels, founder of @HoustonHeightsFoodies and other local Facebook foodie groups, and we wondered: why are more people not publicly fawning over this remarkable restaurant? 🥩 It’s hard to choose a favorite dish; so many were note-perfect, including the stars of the show: dry-aged duck breast dusted with pistachio dukkah and anchored by date demi-glace, and TX Wagyu Bavette with an artful pool of mole Manchamantel (a rich red sauce; the name means “table-stainer”), framed by crema Oaxaqueña. 🐟 Several courses incorporated bread or pastry, each with distinct textures. We started with Masa Cornbread in a cast-iron pan with a goodly amount of cultured butter, and I was utterly enchanted by the Masa Fries, seasoned with ribbons of Benton’s Country Ham and topped with smoked trout roe, providing pops of earthiness and salinity. The tartine, piled with cool ribbons of fresh bluefin tuna accented with smoked butter and fried anchovies, is stuck in my mind, too. 🥮 This was my first Börek: a savory, intricate knot of flaky pastry filled with spinach and Fontina. (It reminded me somewhat of the bastila I used to enjoy at the original Mi Luna, without the baking-spice flavors.) I’m still craving the crunchy filo and silky filling. 🥃 I thoroughly enjoyed the no-playing-around Bayou Old-Fashioned with cacao-infused bourbon, maple and cinnamon. I hope it stays on the menu year-round. For something lighter, try the El Catrin with tequila, Cardamaro, pear and Benedictine. 🍽️ Barbacana is ideal for a pre-theatre dinner—which is what John and I did—but when I return, I’m going to block out the night for the dining experience. Curtain time made me feel a little rushed. Next time, I want to linger and savor every sip and nibble with no limitations. ✍️ + 🎞️ @PhaedraCook #HoustonRestaurants #DowntownHouston #Hous

🍜 Had a chance to visit the combination restaurant concept @CrawfishCafe + @PhoPrimeRestaurant — and I had a lot of fun. Pho Prime specializes in Vietnamese noodle soup with upscale meat options, such as the beef belly I had last night. You can also select Prime Add-Ons. I chose the bone marrow, initially. It wasn’t available so I got the oxtails instead and, wow, for an $8 add-on, these were huge! In addition to the namesake dish, Pho Prime also offers vermicelli bowls, banh mi and plated classics such as bò né (ribeye steak and eggs). 🦞 It’s crawfish season, so from Crawfish Café (which helped popularize Viet-Cajun cuisine in Houston) I selected Boil Combo 2, which comes with half a pound of crawfish, a big snow crab cluster, corn on the cob and a potato, in the Viet Cajun sauce. I shamelessly demolished it (that bib was necessary), and I thought the crawfish and snow crab were perfect to have together. Other seafood selections include shrimp, little neck clams and Gulf blue crab, just to name a few. I didn’t find the Viet Cajun sauce at the “spicy” heat level to be all that threatening, so my pro tip here is to ask for a side of extra-spicy or reaper sauce in case you want to add more excitement to your experience. 🍹My server was outstanding — truly attentive. He noticed that I wasn’t drinking my first cocktail, the Vietnamese Mojito (it was regrettably excessively sweet) and helped me find a suitable replacement. The New Orleans Lemonade, with Southern Comfort, rum, lemon and lime soda, was less sweet, more sturdy and more to my taste. 👯I had a blast, enjoyed very good food and would not only come back but bring friends to help me demolish one of Crawfish Café’s larger seafood selection. Or, if I was back on my own, I’d continue working my way through Pho Prime’s dishes — perhaps the rarely seen Pho Tom (shrimp in beef broth) next. #HoustonFood #HoustonRestaurants #HoustonVietnamese #VietnameseRestaurants #Houston

I’ve been honored to serve as a competition judge for several years at The Grand Tasting & Chef Showcase, the capstone event of @WineandFoodWeek in The Woodlands. Year after year, it proves to be one of the premier tasting events in Greater Houston, and I’m always amazed by the creativity and skill the chefs bring to the competition. Chef David Skinner’s (@eculent & @ishtiatx) scallop in corn sauce set a high bar for everything that followed. Also memorable was @zanticucina’s duck tortellini in wild mushroom consommé. The broth was so good that I picked up the bowl and drank every drop. (Zanti really needs to put this on the menus at both its Woodlands and River Oaks locations. I’d make a special trip just to eat it again.) Now for what you came here for: the photos! 1. It was a treat to meet Top Chef winner @cheftristenepps and hear his perspectives on the dishes. Keep an eye out for his forthcoming Houston restaurant, @BuboyHTX. 2. @houstonchron restaurant critic @baohaus brought out his chef’s jacket for judging duties. 3.
