A chain of solar eruptions (coronal mass ejections) from sunspot region 4274 hurled plasma toward Earth, compressing our magnetic field and igniting brilliant auroras visible far beyond the Arctic Circle. The colors are dictated by gases; oxygen produces green at 100 miles (160 kilometers) high, while nitrogen produces pink and purple edges. I shot these photos in Boulder, Colorado, as the northern lights danced over the iconic Flatirons and Longs Peak, the state’s northernmost 14,000-foot (4,267-meter) peak. If you look closely, you can see headlamps from rock climbers as they made their way up the Third Flatiron. It must have been an incredible way to experience this celestial event.
