𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟕.
Some movies hit you in the gut. Atonement (2007) punches you in the soul, then whispers sorry through a typewriter. I walked out of the theater back then in complete silence. My girlfriend and I didn’t say a word for at least twenty minutes. Not because we didn’t like it. No, we were wrecked. Because Atonement (2007) lures you in with sweeping romance, then rips the floor out from under you and leaves you gasping at the screen, wondering what the hell just happened to your heart. The plot? Can’t say too much. Honestly, the less you know, the better. Here’s what I’ll give you: a young girl tells a lie, one she doesn’t fully understand, and it destroys three lives. That’s it. That’s the premise. But the way it’s told? Masterclass.
James McAvoy delivers a career-defining performance as Robbie. A man caught in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong last name. His chemistry with Keira Knightley (as Cecilia) is off the charts. The unspoken tension between them. The sheer ache of what could’ve been. Keira Knightley is at her best here. Forget the pirate corsets, this is her most refined, restrained, and raw performance. But the real surprise? Saoirse Ronan. As the 13-year-old Briony, she carries the weight of the entire plot on her tiny steely shoulders.
This film is precision-crafted heartbreak. It’s a film that says: life is unfair, stories lie, and the truth often comes too late. It doesn’t hold your hand. It challenges you. And that final twist… I won’t spoil it, but it gutted me. One of the best closing sequences I’ve ever seen. Ever. Atonement (2007) is the reason we watch movies. For beauty. For pain. For that rare moment when everything (the acting, the writing, the music) aligns, and you just sit there, jaw open, unable to move.
If you want to read my full opinion piece and analysis of Atonement (2007) and my top 150 movies, you can find it all in my book “𝟏𝟓𝟎 𝐅*𝐂𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐆𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐌𝐎𝐕𝐈𝐄𝐒”.

In 1995, at the MTV Movie Awards, Cameron Diaz and Chris Isaak were presenting an award when an unexpected moment unfolded. What was meant to be a fun, light-hearted interaction quickly turned unsettling when Isaak leaned in and kissed Diaz. The surprise kiss caught everyone off guard, leaving the audience and Diaz stunned. The spontaneous act, intended as a playful gesture, created an awkward moment on stage. Jim Carrey reacted by swooping in with his own outrageous “revenge” kiss for Isaak. Carrey’s over-the-top gesture diffused the awkwardness and turned this moment in to one of the most memorable moments in MTV history.

Scarlett Johansson’s water ballet scene in “Hail, Caesar!” is a homage to classic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. Directed by the Coen Brothers, the sequence was inspired by Esther Williams, famous for her elaborate synchronized swimming performances. Although Johansson trained extensively for the role, the scene also cleverly plays with Hollywood illusion: what looks effortless is actually the result of precise choreography, camera placement, and editing. The Coens use this moment not just for spectacle, but as a playful commentary on studio-era filmmaking and the manufactured glamour behind the scenes. 🔱

Julia Roberts made history with Erin Brockovich (2000), becoming the first actress ever to receive $20 million for a single film, breaking Hollywood’s gender pay gap at a time when only male stars like Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks earned that amount.
She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the dogged legal assistant who took on Pacific Gas and Electric Company, with the real Erin Brockovich claiming the film was “98 to 99% accurate.”
When asked about her salary negotiation tactics, Roberts said her approach was simple: “Come on. Let’s get real. Let’s be fair.”
One of the best roles of her career and a turning point for women in Hollywood.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐲 is an absolute triumph. Somehow, it feels like Nolan’s most Nolan-esque film while simultaneously being unlike anything he’s made before. It isn’t 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫. It isn’t 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It isn’t 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐫. It stands entirely on its own. Being the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX 70mm, it absolutely deserves to be experienced that way. I was completely blown away by every aspect of the production. The performances, the cinematography, Ludwig Göransson’s score, the scale... everything works together in perfect harmony. There were moments where it genuinely felt as if I was sailing across the Aegean Sea alongside Odysseus and his crew.
The landscapes in IMAX 70mm are simply breathtaking. Endless oceans, towering cliffs, deserted beaches and rugged mountains become characters of their own. And then there are the moments that audiences will be talking about for years. The Greeks hidden inside the Trojan Horse as it’s dragged into Troy is one of the most suspenseful sequences Nolan has ever directed. Matt Damon delivers what may genuinely be the performance of his career. And Samantha Morton’s sequence is destined to become iconic. And then there’s Benny Safdie as Agamemnon. Coming from someone who absolutely loves 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐲 (𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟒), where Brian Cox portrayed Agamemnon as a king consumed by greed, I wasn’t sure how Safdie would compare, especially after seeing the costume designs online. The armor and helmet sparked plenty of debate before release, and I had my doubts too. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Benny Safdie absolutely owns every scene he’s in. His Agamemnon is the modern-day Darth Vader. An absolute final boss.
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐲 will go down as one of the best movies of this decade. At this point, it feels like the clear frontrunner for Best Picture (unless Denis Villeneuve somehow manages to surpass it with Dune III). Chirs Nolan truly delivered. He sailed through storms, ignored the noise surrounding the project, and emerged with a movie that reminds us exactly why this story has survived for over 3000 years. Timeless.

A Bronx Tale (1993) is one of those rare films that feels less like you’re watching a story and more like you’re being told one. Based on Chazz Palminteri’s real-life experiences and brought to life by Robert De Niro in his directorial debut, this is a movie about the choices that shape a life. And the people who shape those choices.
It’s one of the most heartfelt, underrated films of the ‘90s. A masterclass in restraint. A love letter to fathers, sons, and the neighborhoods that raise us. Robert De Niro directed only two times but with this movie, he didn’t need to again. He said everything he had to say.

This is PRIME Bruce Willis: an iconic ’90s performance from The Last Boy Scout (1991). 👀
This movie came out at a time when the macho action thrillers popularised in the 1980’s were starting to die out. It also took a beating from critics, many voicing their displeasure at the foul-mouthed dialogue. It’s a shame really, as looking back, The Last Boy Scout (1991) really represents the pinnacle of this overly masculine sub-genre, even though it arrived at a time when audiences were growing tired with it. Yes, it’s preposterous, crude and slightly misogynistic, but it’s also funny, clever and features Bruce Willis at his most quotable best.
God I miss Bruce so much in movies… 💔

Charlize Theron shaved her eyebrows and gained between 20 and 30 pounds (10 – 15kg) for her Oscar Winning role in 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 (𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟑).
She said that after she won the Oscar, instead of people talking about her acting abilities, she had to deal with every interviewer obsessing over how a pretty, thin person could possibly be “brave” enough to gain weight and, as it has since become known in the industry, “go ugly.” When the first photo stills from Monster were published, no one could believe that Theron would downplay her ‘greatest asset’ to become a homeless lesbian prostitute and serial k*ler.”

𝐂𝐇𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐍𝐎𝐋𝐀𝐍 is more than a film director. He’s an 𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐒𝐓!
After being rejected from film school, Nolan taught himself how to make films. He scraped together just $6,000 to finance his first feature, Following (1998), shooting on weekends with friends using leftover 16mm film stock. That independent mindset has never left him. Unlike many modern filmmakers, Nolan has a 𝐍𝐎 𝐂𝐆𝐈 𝐑𝐔𝐋𝐄. never relied on CGI as the foundation of his movies. His philosophy is simple: capture as much as possible in-camera and don’t be solely dependent on CGI.
His new 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐝𝐲𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐲 is perhaps his best example yet. To bring the Cyclops to life, Nolan used a giant practical puppet suspended inside a real cave in Greece. The giants were portrayed by 7-foot stunt performers, while ancient cities were constructed from the ground up. The production built a 35-foot Trojan Horse, recreated a massive section of Troy large enough to hold more than 2,000 extras, and physically dragged the horse across the beach for the cameras. Instead of relying on green screens, the film was shot across breathtaking historical locations, including a centuries-old castle, making Homer’s mythical world feel astonishingly real.
Now let’s take a look back at some of the incredible scenes he brought to life throughout his career.
Which one is your favorite? And what do you think is Christopher Nolan’s greatest achievement?

When 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐘𝐨𝐫𝐤 premiered, the reaction was far from enthusiastic. Early screenings were met with hostility. some audience members reportedly walked out, while others booed at the film’s morally ambiguous tone. Critics were divided, unsure how to respond to its raw style. Director Abel Ferrara had deliberately pushed against genre expectations, which initially alienated viewers. Over time, however, perceptions changed. The film was reappraised for its boldness and influence, eventually earning a reputation as a defining cult classic of 1990s crime cinema.

Ethan Hawke later admitted he was not fond of 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟖) due to its main theme of classism but was intrigued by Alfonso Cuarón’s artistic modernization of it and was eager to work with him and Robert De Niro. He also notes that despite good reviews, it did not do well in the box office due to it being released during James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) mania, but did rather well in the home rental market, VHS (and DVD) sales, and movie channel views. To this day, people still approach Hawke and tell him this is one of their favorite romantic movies.

In a January 2013 interview with the New York Post, director Steven Soderbergh said that the film was originally intended for theatrical release, but was ultimately produced by and aired on HBO instead because the story was seen as “too gay” by all of the major Hollywood studios: “Nobody would make it, we went to everybody in town. They all said it was too gay. And this is after Brokeback Mountain (2005), by the way, which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us.” Despite this, the film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, where it received its worldwide premiere. It was also theatrically released in Europe and the rest of the world.

Ten Things I Hate About You (1999)was Heath Ledger’s first American film and the one that introduced him to a wider audience. He won the role of Patrick Verona over Josh Hartnett and Ashton Kutcher, bringing a mix of humor and ease that stood out in the late ’90s teen genre.
The movie was filmed entirely on real locations, including Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington. The building was first designed as a chateau-style railroad hotel, but after a fire, it was rebuilt as a school. One of Ledger’s best moments, when Patrick plays with the fire in the chemistry lab, was improvised on the spot and kept in the final cut. The film not only made Ledger a star but also showed the natural screen presence that would define his later work.

In Malcolm X (1992), Denzel Washington delivers one of the most mind blowing performance that will be remembered for generations.
Speaking to a crowded room of Black men, his character challenges centuries of racialized religious imagery, using faith as a lens to expose how power and identity have been shaped by white supremacy. When Malcolm points to a picture of a white Jesus and asks why Black people worship an image that looks nothing like them, he forces the audience to confront how deeply colonial narratives have entered their consciousness. This monologue reflects a larger theme in Malcolm X (1992): the struggle for self-definition. By dismantling the false symbols imposed on his community, Malcolm redefines faith as empowerment rather than submission. Religion, in his view, should not reinforce oppression but challenge it.

Although Shia LaBeouf wore fake cauliflower ears in “The Tax Collector” (to indicate that his character is an experienced fighter), he went even further by getting real tattoos all over his body highlighting his dedictation to director David Ayer.
The Tax Collector (2020) is set in the same cinematic universe as David Ayer’s earlier films Training Day (2001) and Harsh Times (2005). Characters and gangs connect these three movies: the Blood gang member “Bone” which Alonzo Harris interacts with in Training Day (2001), is referenced in both The Tax Collector (2020) and Harsh Times (2005). These links reinforce a shared world across Ayer’s films, adding depth and continuity to the narrative universe.

1. He was nothing like Tony Soprano. Despite often playing intimidating characters, Gandolfini was described by friends and co-stars as gentle, thoughtful, soft-spoken and surprisingly shy.
2. He almost played Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction. Gandolfini was considered for the role that eventually went to John Travolta. The two were very good friends and their families knew each other before either became famous.
3. He almost became Michael Scott. Gandolfini was reportedly offered $4 million to join The Office. HBO, not wanting Tony Soprano appearing on another network, reportedly paid him $3 million not to take the role.
4. He went to extreme places to become Tony. To get genuinely angry before scenes, Gandolfini said he would sleep very little, bang his head against a wall and even put a small sharp rock inside his shoe.
5. He quietly shared his Sopranos money.
After learning he was receiving money from DVD profits while other cast members weren’t, Gandolfini reportedly gave several of his co-stars substantial checks from his own earnings.
6. Before Hollywood, he was a Manhattan bartender. Gandolfini spent years bartending while struggling to establish himself as an actor.
7. He was musical, too. He could play both the trumpet and saxophone.
8. He transformed his body for The Mexican. He lost more than 40 pounds, then had to regain the weight before returning as Tony Soprano because producers didn’t want a noticeably thinner Tony.
9. Robert De Niro was his idol and he worked with Brad Pitt three times: True Romance, The Mexican and Killing Them Softly.
10. His life ended far too soon. Gandolfini died suddenly in Rome on June 19, 2013, at just 51 years old. Later that year, Spike Jonze’s “Her” was dedicated to his memory.

Twenty-five years ago, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives in a single day. Countless more had their lives changed forever.
This year, New York City released thousands of previously undisclosed records concerning the city’s response to the attacks and their aftermath. Among them are documents showing that officials raised concerns about air quality and potential health risks around Ground Zero while the public was being reassured that the air was safe. More documents are expected to be released in the coming months.
We will never forget the victims, the families whose lives changed forever, or the extraordinary bravery of those who ran toward danger when others were trying to escape.

One of the most unforgettable scenes in 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐞 (𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟕) is the infamous gala dinner sequence, where performance artist Oleg, played by motion-capture legend Terry Notary, slowly transforms an elegant black-tie event into absolute chaos.
What makes the scene even more fascinating is that many of the guests Oleg intimidates weren’t actors. They were drawn from the real Swedish art elite, including some of the country’s wealthiest collectors and museum patrons. Terry Notary didn’t even know this until filming was almost over. “They were so into it,” he later recalled. Rather than targeting the volunteers who wanted to interact with him, he deliberately chose the people who looked the most uncomfortable, creating reactions that feel startlingly authentic.
Director Ruben Östlund said the sequence was designed as an experiment in human behavior:
“These people that in the beginning were sitting in tuxedos and eating their nice, fancy dinner, I wanted them to be uncivilized animals in the end. I think that the most uncivilized thing about our time is the collective rage against individuals that are acting uncivilized. Isn’t that the scary thing about us?”
The scene is also a study of the bystander effect. Everyone waits for someone else to intervene while Oleg’s behavior grows increasingly violent. As fear spreads through the room, the sophisticated guests become frozen, more concerned with not becoming the next target than with helping anyone else. Östlund has said that, like herd animals, humans often become paralyzed when confronted with unexpected danger.
