🇸🇳 In Senegal I met a family that didn't have much. Multiple generations living under one roof, working hard together to put food on the table. After a lot of hard work, they bought a car. That car became a taxi. The extra income paid for school books at the local school. 📚 Community isn't a concept it's a strategy of living. And somewhere along the way, we forgot that. We have so much to learn from that. The village raises the child. The community builds the future. And I left Senegal wondering why we ever thought we could do any of this alone. 🌍

5 things I learned over the past 2 years of fulltime backpacking: 📌 but first: SAVE this for your next trip & follow @f.a.q.backpackers for more travel inspiration 🌸 It's not about the destination. It's about the journey. • After 1.5 years on the road, I met some backpackers who were so excited about the 5 destinations they'd visit in 2 weeks. Don't get me wrong, everyone has their own journey 🫶 But I had just spent months in West Africa, and just thinking about that pace made me tired. Slowing down changed everything for me. ✨️ Not following the path of society doesn't make you behind in life. • After a year, I went home for a short visit. Friends were getting engaged, married, buying houses,… And me? I came home with barely any savings left. I started doubting my choices. But once I was back on the road, meeting people with a similar mindset, I realised there's more to life than one fixed timeline. 🎀 You need way less than you think. • My first backpack weighed 15–17kg. I thought I did great 😅 The amount of clothes I never wore and medication I never used was crazy. Now I travel with hand luggage only and it feels so light. Do I miss my beautiful clothes? YES, I DO! But the money I save and the back pain I avoid? Worth it. Haha. Bring what you really need, the rest you'll find locally. ☀️ Say YES more often to things that scare you. • Don't lose your common sense, but try new foods and hang out with locals. They know the place way better than you do. Step off the beaten path, because that's where you learn the most about the communities you're visiting. Book local! 🩷 Adapt to local customs, habits and values. • You're not home.Observe, talk, listen and read about the place you're staying, to understand why people do things the way they do.
