Sometimes, being an expert in one scientific field doesn’t translate to another. But then there’s Luis Alvarez, a particle physicist who helped expand our knowledge of the world by investigating everything from atomic bombs, to Egyptian pyramids, to what actually killed the dinosaurs. This video was inspired by Collisions: A Physicist’s Journey from Hiroshima to the Death of the Dinosaurs, a new book by Alec Nevala-Lee. If you’d like to check it out, head to the SciShow Bookshop page. Made in partnership with The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

While these concretions aren’t the remnants of a lost city, we do know that studying how they formed can give us insights into ocean currents, climate change, and could even give us insights into making cleaner, greener concrete. This video was inspired by Megalodons, Mermaids, and Climate Change: Answers to Your Ocean and Atmosphere Questions, a new book by Ellen Prager and Dave Jones. One day, we might nap our way to Mars. Researchers believe suspended animation or
hibernation is the best way to travel through space. Here’s how they want to do it.
Support for this video was contributed by the Translational Research Institute for Space Health
at Baylor College of Medicine. TRISH is an applied health research catalyst that funds
high-impact scientific studies and technologies to keep astronauts healthy during deep space
exploration. TRISH is empowered by the NASA Human Research Program, and a consortium

People have been trying to prevent the spread of infectious disease forever, yet we only got germ theory in the 19th century. This isn’t the alchemy you’re used to from modern pop-culture adaptations. In real life, alchemists weren’t fighting the forces of evil. They were conducting experiments, making observations, and drawing conclusions.

If that sounds like science to you, that’s because IT IS.

Learn about the real science behind alchemy, and Newton’s role in it, in our latest Deep Dive.

The ocean is our lifeline—it provides food, regulates the climate, and is home to vibrant ecosystems yet to be discovered. However, the ocean is also fragile and requires sustainable solutions to ensure its health for future generations.

This World Oceans Day, take a dive into this video from @thescishow, made in partnership with @seafoodwatch, that highlights the importance of sustainable seafood and innovative ways to reduce the capture of non-target species like sharks and turtles.

We are thrilled to announce that a second SciShow's Residency has just wrapped production!

The team knew they wanted to do another Residency after the first one was so successful. The only thing to decide was who the next Resident was going to be. SciShow received several suggestions and got to work researching amazing candidates for this opportunity. Ultimately, one familiar name stuck out.

SciShow's Editorial Director, Daniel Comiskey, said, "We had a new freelance writer named Madelyn Leembruggen, who was pitching so many great ideas. She had recently completed her PhD in physics at Harvard, so maybe it shouldn't have been a surprise. But I looked into her, and in addition to some great science TikToks, she had given a funny TED talk that used physics to argue that every food could be classified as a soup, salad, or sandwich. I knew we had our second Resident. The goal of the program this year is the same as it was last: help launch the career of a promising young science communicator and get some amazing SciShow videos in the process. I can't wait for viewers to see what Madelyn has cooking."

Please allow us to formally introduce you to Madelyn Leembruggen! Madelyn is a physics expert and a natural in front of the camera. She pitched, wrote, and hosted 10 episodes about everything from rainy weekends to the physics behind coffee spills coming out later this fall.

Check out Madelyn's TEDx Talk here: https://youtu.be/SL4mRlqK-qo?si=0K-w92wdpUeBKFno.
And keep an eye on the SciShow channel for Madelyn's episodes premiering in September!

In January 1925, the children of Nome, Alaska faced a deadly diphtheria outbreak. Every child in Nome and its surrounding towns were in danger. Their local doctor couldn’t stop the progression of the disease, and with the next closest doctor being 10 days away, things did not look good.

We make no assumptions here… but depending on your age, you might know where this is going. This story has a happy ending thanks to some very good boys and girls. One of these good boys, Balto, has even been memorialized in museums and on film. But how much of the 1995 animated movie is true?
