9 years of marriage today. I know anniversary posts can be cheesy but I absolutely love the chance to scroll through years of photos and videos and see the adventure we are living together.

Never in a million years would we have thought life would look the way it does for us today, but that's just because our imaginations aren't good enough to imagine this kind of crazy life.

2016: Elopement day (📸 @benjhaisch )
2017: Picking up Kramer - first family photo!
2018: Leaving our life in Seattle to buildout our first van
2019: Entire year was spent traveling in the van and a highlight was driving the Alaska Highway
2020: Buying our first home
2021: Inaugural trip in our newly completed second van in Glacier National Park
2022: Wearing hanboks in Korea
2023: First family photo with our new camper
2024: RAGBRAI (cycling across Iowa)

Today was one of those pinch me moments. We were honored to speak at @chickfila headquarters.

The team, atmosphere, and hospitality were genuinely something else. Everyone we met was warm, sharp, and made us feel like we belonged there (we’re still not sure we did). Getting to share our story with that room was one of those “wait, this is our job?” moments we don’t take lightly.

Also, we sat on the famous red couch… which if you’re wondering, the springs in the middle need a more support. I guess it just means they’ve met a lot of people and heard a lot of good stories. ❤️

Thanks @chickfila for having us

NEWS: I am officially a Kentucky Colonel.

This came in the mail. Real letterhead. Governor’s seal. My full government name.

Kentucky has given out this honor since 1813. Muhammad Ali had one. Colonel Sanders had one (before or after the chicken, unclear). Winston Churchill had one. And now me, a guy from Kentucky who left to live in a van.

My stated duties are to “spread Kentucky’s good name” wherever I go. I’ve been doing that for free for six years from a moving vehicle, so this feels long overdue.

I have already asked Sara if she has to salute me. She said no. I’m looking into whether that’s legally accurate.

Updating the email handle to Colonel Chris immediately.
Kentucky, I won’t let you down. 🫡

Okay, so we kind of disappeared from posting a few months.

Not in a dramatic way.

Nobody was in the hospital, we didn’t quit, nothing fell apart. We actually never stopped filming. We just stopped posting any of it. A few months slid by, and now here we are explaining ourselves on the internet like you do.

Here’s the actual story. Part of it is that we’ve been heads-down on some big stuff we’re not ready to talk about yet. But the other part is simpler. We just wanted to be here.

In the U.K., driving the ridiculously narrow roads, and letting Kramer sniff every wall that’s older than our country. We’ve filmed almost all of it, we just haven’t been in a hurry to hit publish… but we will soon.

And honestly, when this is your job, that messes with your head a little. There’s a quiet fear that if you’re not posting, you’re not working. That if nobody sees it, it didn’t count. That you look away for one second and everyone forgets you exist.
But going quiet didn’t break anything.

The pull between living your life and posting your life is always going to be there. We spent a long time treating it like a problem to fix. It’s not. It’s just the deal. And it’s actually the thing that keeps us balanced, as long as we don’t let go of either side.

So swipe through. This is the UK. This is what we were doing instead of telling you what we were doing.

We didn’t really go anywhere.

We’re still here.

Y'all, Scotland's beaches are INCREDIBLE. What's even crazier is that all of these photos were taken on the same little island! Scotland alone has over 4,000 miles of coastline, many of which miles feature crystal clear blue waters and sandy beaches.

Keep in mind that it gets COLD in Scotland. When these pictures were taken it was about 45 degrees in June with a windchill making it feel much colder.

That being said, visiting these beaches is 100% worth it if you have the time. But my biggest piece of advice: don't rush it.

Take your time. Drive slow and soak it all in. Scotland is a place that is meant to be appreciated at a slower pace with a cup of hot coffee (or a whiskey) in hand. Bring your camping chair, a blanket, and a good book and just relax. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Shoutout to @highlands2hammocks for introducing us to the beauty of the Outer Hebrides! We were introduced to their account a few weeks before we arrived and have loved finding so many incredible places from their page.

Do you ever feel that feeling that’s similar to homesickness but yet you want nothing more to be somewhere new and discover new places? Somewhere between burnout and just general exhaustion?

That’s where we are right now. I suppose we’re simply exhausted.

We’re struggling with wanting to see everything but also preserving our mental and physical well-being by taking it slower and resting when our bodies are telling us they need rest more than adventure.

It’s a weird feeling to be somewhere where you want to see everything but yet somehow you know what you NEED is to sit down with old friends over a cup of coffee and catch up on all the mundane life things.

Europe has been a literal dream come true, but with all of the excitement and newness comes a new type of tiredness. We’ve been go-go-go for over four months now; We’ve been trying to see and do as much as possible, and that’s left us feeling worn out and hungry for the soul-nourishing stuff: people. Our people.

We’ve met countless kind people across Europe over the last four months, but there’s nothing quite like those friends who get you and know you on a more personal level. We’re hungry for good conversation and the simplicity of a bit of routine.

We’ve been so worn out the last few days that we even contemplated booking tickets home for two weeks just to reset. It’s still not entirely out of the question, but we also know it’s not the most responsible decision since we have to be back in Germany at the end of the month.

So for now we’re trying to reset while in a place that’s tempting us to want to try and see everything. Right now we’re struggling with the feeling of “Wow, we’re in this once in a lifetime place experiencing things we’ve dreamed of for year” and “oh my gosh, I’m exhausted!”

Balance. I guess that’s really what we’re after right now. We need a bit of balance so we can continue exploring the places around us.

Side note: There’s no new video this week. Our next vlog is going to be extra long (we’re lumping all of Belgium into one super vlog) so it’s taking a lot longer to edit than we expected.

We’ll be back on YouTube in a few days, but for now, enjoy a few pictures from Belgium.

Good news: Our brakes went out on the sunniest day we've had in Scotland so far. And we problem solved it all on our own!

Bad news: we did this in a parking lot at a golf course drawing very unwanted attention. 🙄

We knew when we bought a 35+ year old truck that it would have little hiccups here and there. This is really only the second mechanical issue we've had in the truck and both times we've had issues they've been pretty straightforward (thank goodness).

We're by no means mechanics but our skills are slowly improving. 🛠️ I'm going to go ahead and add "diesel mechanic" to my resumes skill set section.

Also, Toyota is the best. It's amazing how much we trust and love this truck. It might be slow and noisy, but it's a tank that'll get us there safely. 🛻

Drop KRAMER in the comments if you want the link to the trailer and we’ll send it over.

We spend a lot of time out on our bikes, and it always feels better when Kramer’s along for the ride. The Burley Tail Wagon has pretty much become part of our everyday gear. It’s easy to pull and makes every trip feel like a little family adventure.

Kramer gets the front-row seat to everything we do, and we love that he can be part of all the miles and memories with us. If your dog insists on coming everywhere too, this trailer makes it simple to bring them along. Burley is running their summer sale from 7/17-7/21 and here is a coupon code for an additional 10% off your purchase during the sale period: SS10-CS

Reality of traveling with a dog: having to take turns in museums. It's not ideal, but it's also has its benefits.

Taking turns in museums allows us to go at our own pace through the exhibits while the other gets a bit of time at a coffee shop reading, journaling, or (as in this case) sitting and people watching on the museum's front steps because it's a surprisingly not-rainy day in Scotland.

Oftentimes @travelingkramer is fine alone in the camper for a while or even a hotel room if we're traveling without the truck, but on long days in the city where we took the train in from the park and ride, it's not possible to drop him off for a nap in the camper for a bit so we have to improvise.

If you travel with a dog we'd love to hear your pro tips for making it easier for the whole group.👫🏼🐶

One year ago today we picked up our truck from a cargo ship in Southampton, England. After a year and a half in Mexico and Central America we were ready for something totally different: Europe.

Since the truck met us in the UK we’ve bounced back and forth every 3 months between the EU and UK to make sure we don’t overstay our visa-free travel allotment in each region.

While we’ve loved something about every country we’ve visited, the last year has been specially in a whole new way.

Europe always seemed a bit unattainable to us, at least in the capacity we wanted to visit by traveling slowly. Hotels, eating out, and flights back and forth would have been beyond our limited budget.

This little truck, while yes, it does consume a good bit of liquid gold (aka diesel), has been a much more affordable way to allow us to see places we’ve only dreamed of.

Not only has it been cost effective, but we’ve been able to travel in a way that many tourists never get to. We stay on farms, at pubs, and campgrounds with other domestic tourists. We venture down one lane backroads and stop in off the beaten path towns that rarely see tourists, much less American tourists.

We regularly get the comment, “well you’re a long way from home!” when folks see our license plate. I suppose we are far from our technical home address, but to us this little truck feels more like home than any physical address and it goes wherever we do.

Seven years on the road so far and no plans of stopping anytime soon. ❤️

Have you caught any of our Christmas in Europe mini series on YouTube? So far we have three vlogs out (Munich, Nuremberg, and Stuttgart) and they’re the perfect thing to put on the tv while wrapping Christmas presents or if you find yourself at home having a quieter holiday season than usual.

Our hope is that wherever you find yourself this Christmas that we can join you virtually through these videos and spend a bit of time with you and share a bit of Christmas traditions from around the world.

Enjoy these photos from Munich vlog! 👀 🎥 🎄

July, you were one for the books. We swam in lochs, hiked mountains, explored caves, drove to the northern most point of Great Britain, walked the streets of Glasgow, Inverness, and Edinburgh, camped in wild places, got too many midge bites to count, and ultimately fell more in love with Scotland (not even the wee midges could keep us from loving this place).

After 2 1/2 months in Scotland we officially crossed the border back into England and are heading to the continent Monday. We still have three more vlogs from Scotland so stay tuned! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our first vlog from England is now live on Youtube!

This video is sort of a first impressions type video, but I'll be honest, we really struggled with this video because how do you try and squeeze all of your first impressions from a place like the England into one video?!

Our new English friends have DELIVERED with the UK recommendations and we're more excited than ever to get exploring this island.

For now go checkout the video over on YouTube and let us know in the comments where you think we should go in the UK. 🇬🇧
