After the explosive welcome @justwannaweekend gave The Chicks when they walked onto the stage I’ll never forget what Natalie Maines said… “Are there by chance any lesbians here?!” The way I spit my Don Julio…. The Chicks DELIVERED. They fully understood the assignment after seven years of enthusiastically pulling them closer and closer to our festival. This was their first show in almost 3 years and they didn’t miss a beat, a note or a dance move. Of all the stages they could have chosen to return to, they chose us. There are many miracles I’ve witnessed and indelible sounds I’ll never forget… but among them now is the sound of thousands of free thinking humans singing/screaming THIS when the first chords of The Chicks’ magical set rang out…. “Who doesn’t know what I’m talking about Who’s never left home, who’s never struck out To find a dream and a life of their own A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone” ☝️This says it all. Leaving LA and feeling proud, content and honestly lucky to be making music in these heavy days. I heard folks say some beautiful things and I dig the way musicians express themselves under pressure. There’s a lot of humanity in our community and I find it really refreshing. It was so fun to spend a couple days with my wild woman @jonimitchell. I was so happy for her when she won and as always, just proud to be her pal… also it never gets old watching her watch @brunomars lol I just fucking love watching people win shit lol 😂 Still screaming for @imwithherband @laufey @yungblud; I really like @zachtop; becoming a big @oliviadeano fan; I dig @lolayounggg; I loved watching @thisiswatt and @blakemills win for their vision… mother @mavisstaples… so many more than I can list here! I talked to Elton in the mornings and we made our predictions and talked shit. We didn’t win but we will always love our album and love each other - there’s something really pure about making something just for us in a way… it’s like an inside joke or maybe silently squeezing someone’s hand. For me it was the realization or some kind of manifestation of a powerful dream. ‘Who Believes In Angels?’ is proof of all things mystical to me. Congratulations to all of the winners and nominees!! I loved it! This album is out on October 24th. It’s called “Returning To Myself”. There are many reasons for this. It’s not a “solo” album. I’m always alone and never alone at the same time… It’s just that it comes at a time where I’m reflecting and realizing that learning to stand alone is something that people are supposed to do when they’re young. Like skiing or chickenpox. That if we miss our chance when the pain tolerance is at its highest, we may never do it. Fine with me. I’d rather fight off “aloneness” forever. Why is it heroic to untether when the tense work of togetherness is so much more interesting? …because I don’t want to do it. Because I don’t want to return to myself. And that’s why I will. It took a lot of steady souls to free me into myself on this project, including the Twins and my band. This album is produced by me, @thisiswatt, and @aarondessner, with some extra special fairy dust from Justin Vernon too. I have a lot more to say about this… What a wonderful thing to be carried and yet held up so high.
