Dolly traded in her butterfly wings today. I felt her leaving all week and I’ve been singing “Coat Of Many Colors” with I’m With Her and asking folks to pray everyday. I don’t even know why. She took my face in her hands and prayed over me once. I’ve never been the same since. Her prayers were maybe more powerful than mine or anyone else’s, because that prayer has had a very long rainbow colored halo and I hope it lasts me my whole life. I’m married to an agnostic Londoner, and I can’t help but laugh out loud when I think of the raptured audience at Glastonbury in the palm of Dolly’s hands, as she ended her once in a lifetime set by shouting “can I get an amen?!” The sound of two hundred thousand immediate British “AMENS” is something that causes me to burst into American hysterics at least once a week! Dolly had a way of deeply belonging to every one of us, and yet somehow still not being of this world. There’s really only one other person in human history I can think of who has held that light. I loved Dolly with all my heart. Before I met her, I loved her because she took a risk and accepted me (and all of us) for being gay in a time where she didn’t need to say anything. And she has been asked to comment and speak on MANY things over the years… choosing only to speak on that which brings love and mercy to real people, and shutting down any line of questioning that won’t. She never wavered on accepting anyone for who they were and who they were meant to be. After I met her, I loved her for being obscenely generous, whip smart and possessing the kind of otherworldly discernment I’ll never stop chasing. Dolly was the boss to beat all bosses and I’m one of the lucky few to experience that side of her. She was a musician’s musician, with expectations higher than the scariest roller coaster at Dollywood! A bona fide rockstar, a preacher and the quickest comedian I ever took a shot from. And yet I’m nobody and everyone all at once. Just a heartbroken Dolly fan at the end of the day with a head full of memories, prayers and songs left behind by a big breasted angel with a twinkle in her eye and the whole world in her hands. Thank you Dolly - you changed

“God mend thine every flaw” I woke up this morning struggling to caption our performance at the Statue of Liberty 🗽for a Fourth of July post.. the lyrics to this historic song say almost everything I believe about America and the hope I hold for her. Instead, I’d like to share what Monique and Chauntee (@sistastrings) said about what that powerful experience meant to them: “We stood together- three women with three very different lives representing our communities and the change we want to see in our country. It wasn’t lost on us as we stood in the shadows of the Statue of Liberty that our ancestors didn’t gaze on her with the hope of a better future that so many immigrants to this country did. Out of America’s 250 years, Black Americans have been free for 161 years. The statue steps on broken chains as a representation of the abolishment of slavery. As children of the enslaved, we played our instruments with the strength of our lineage that went through the impossible so that we could have every opportunity. For every ancestor who couldn’t dream beyond surviving to our daughters and nieces whose dreams are bigger than life- we offered up a prayer. America the Beautiful.” This is what America 250 and the Fourth of July mean to me this year. To all who celebrate the dream of America and resolve to keep pursuing it. Let me tell you why I am so deeply moved to have been chosen as one of @time’s Women of the Year… There are hard times and times that call for celebration through history so I know we aren’t entirely unique…but this year feels like it weighs a thousand tons. This group of 16 women are profoundly inspiring to me for even managing to wake up everyday and put one foot in front of the other, let alone move the needle in the way they’re moving it. To know I’ve made a difference in troubling times is life affirming and more than I deserve. To @time and the other women on this list: thank you for letting a little more light into the world

This group of 16 women are profoundly inspiring to me for even managing to wake up everyday and put one foot in front of the other, let alone move the needle in the way they’re moving it. To know I’ve made a difference in troubling times is life affirming and more than I deserve. To @time and the other women on this list: thank you for letting a little more light into the world

After the explosive welcome @justwannaweekend gave The Chicks when they walked onto the stage I’ll never forget what Natalie Maines said… “Are there by chance any lesbians here?!” The way I spit my Don Julio…. The Chicks DELIVERED. They fully understood the assignment after seven years of enthusiastically pulling them closer and closer to our festival. This was their first show in almost 3 years and they didn’t miss a beat, a note or a dance move. Of all the stages they could have chosen to return to, they chose us. There are many miracles I’ve witnessed and indelible sounds I’ll never forget… but among them now is the sound of thousands of free thinking humans singing/screaming THIS when the first chords of The Chicks’ magical set rang out…. “Who doesn’t know what I’m talking about Who’s never left home, who’s never struck out To find a dream and a life of their own A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone” ☝️This says it all. Thank you @thechicks we hear you loud and clear —— 📸 @jenhortonwho @anmariekittysnaps
