The Pope has entered the AI discourse.

In his first major teaching document, Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical warned about AI’s potential to deepen inequality, concentrate power, distort democracy, and create what he called new forms of “digital slavery.”

He also called for AI to be “disarmed,” arguing that technological power alone shouldn’t automatically give people the right to govern or shape society.

The 200-page document doesn’t just focus on chatbots and algorithms. It takes aim at bigger questions around who controls technology, who benefits from it, and what happens when too much power sits in too few hands.

And for the most part, the internet got behind it. Not in the AI-doomer side of discourse, but rather in the AI responsibility side.

Whether the latter becomes a reality is anyone’s guess.

It’s not every day the richest people in America unite over a common cause, but this time, it’s fear.

Leaked data shows 26 billionaires have spent $22 million backing candidates opposing Zohran Mamdani, the socialist frontrunner for New York City mayor.

Donors include Bloomberg, Ackman, Gebbia, Lauder, Diller, and more, all pouring millions into groups like Fix the City to keep him out of office.

Mamdani’s platform? Rent freezes, free buses, and higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy.

His warning? “Billionaires are right to see us as an existential threat.”

In a city built by workers and run by money, this race is shaping up to test who really runs New York.

The internet just created a national advertisement.

What started as a casual TikTok jingle by @Romeo.show turned into a national Dr Pepper ad during the College Football Playoff, all because millions of people decided it deserved to be one.

Brands flooded her comments. The algorithm did its thing. Dr Pepper listened. And yes, she got paid.

This is what modern marketing looks like now, where talent beats polish and culture moves faster than campaigns. Thankfully, real-life creators are increasingly setting the agenda instead of waiting for brands to do it.

When the internet agrees this loudly, companies don’t really get a choice. They either join the moment or miss it.

Judging by the comment section, this probably isn’t the last brand to come calling for @romeo.show

This weekend offered a clear lesson in how movie distribution is changing.

Markiplier’s independently financed film Iron Lung earned approximately $22 million worldwide after he promoted it directly to his 38 million YouTube subscribers.

Markiplier has said he spent a few million dollars making the movie, meaning it has already turned a huge profit.

By comparison, Amazon reportedly spent around $75 million to produce and market Melania, which brought in about $7 million at the box office.

This does not mean Hollywood is about to disappear. But it does raise a serious question about whether creator-led distribution will become a more common path for mid-budget films.

Kalshi’s billboard is turning NYC’s mayoral race into a live stock ticker.

The prediction market’s new billboard tracks real-time odds for who’ll become the city’s next mayor, with Zohran Mamdani currently holding a strong lead.

Business leaders have threatened an exodus from NYC if Mamdani wins, but his popularity has continued to surge with policies that aim to correct the cost of living and right the uneven economic playing field.

Meanwhile, Sliwa has said he’s turned down bribes to exit the race, and Cuomo is grasping on for dear life.

No matter where the @kalshi odds land, New Yorkers get the final say soon:

🗳️ Key Voting Dates
 Early voting: Oct 25–Nov 2
Election Day: Tuesday, Nov 4 (6AM–9PM)

Have you ever wanted to own an entire village?

Tut Hill in Pittston, Maine spans 42.5 acres and includes 21 buildings, from a Greek Revival home to an 1825 church, plus barns, garages, apartments, and apple trees lining the property. The asking price is $5.5 million.

It’s been pitched as a wedding venue, corporate retreat campus, or private estate. There are multi-bay garages for collectors, restored historic spaces for events, and enough land to feel like your own world.

For context, $5.5M in some cities gets you a luxury condo. Here, it gets you a village.

So… are we all chipping in?

AI companies want more human-written data. The solution? They’re buying physical books and destroying them in the process.

Companies have been sourcing older books, removing their bindings and scanning the pages to create digital copies that can be used for AI training. Anthropic previously used destructive scanning to digitize millions of legally purchased books for its internal library.

There’s a legal wrinkle, too. A federal judge ruled that Anthropic’s creation of digital copies from books it legally purchased constituted fair use, with the originals destroyed rather than kept alongside the scans.

Now, reports that older, out-of-print and potentially scarce books are being sourced for AI have triggered outrage online, with some critics comparing the practice to a modern form of book burning.

Even more dystopian? Older books are especially useful precisely because they were written before the internet became flooded with AI-generated content.

The American Dream isn’t dead, it’s just getting expensive.

New data shows the average household now needs over $5 million to hit classic life milestones like home ownership, kids, vacations, and retirement.

A 20-year retirement alone requires $1.6M in savings, while raising two kids and paying for college adds another $876K. Even weddings, cars, and pets push the total higher.

The median homebuyer is now 56 years old, and fertility rates have fallen to record lows, proof that for many, the dream has shifted from “white picket fence” to “financial survival.”

People aren’t just watching the Epstein documents drop, they’re betting on it.

Polymarket traders are speculating on which public figures could be named when the next batch of court records is unsealed.

These markets don’t say anything about guilt or wrongdoing. They only reflect what thousands of anonymous bettors believe will appear in the documents based on past reporting, court filings, and public info.

It’s a wild snapshot of how the internet now treats every major news event like the stock market.

A massive act of generosity is about to change life for more than 261,000 Californians.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr made a multimillion-dollar donation to nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, helping erase $550 million in medical debt across the state. Californians whose debt has been cleared will start receiving letters in mid-July.

The biggest impact was in San Diego County, where the donation relieved about $99 million in debt for 40,369 people. In Los Angeles County, it wiped out $26.7 million for 17,466 people.

In a state where the cost of living already feels impossible, this is the kind of news that can genuinely change someone’s year.

Shoutout to Pasadena’s pride and joy!

Trader Joe’s just ranked #1 on Forbes’ 2026 list of best large employers, beating out tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

Employees report strong benefits, consistent pay increases averaging around 7% a year, and a culture that actually prioritizes people over efficiency.

Even their biggest “business move” feels backwards in 2026…

They’ve refused to adopt self-checkout, doubling down on human interaction instead of automation.
And for SoCal… this one hits a little different.

Trader Joe’s started in the Pasadena area before growing into one of the most recognizable grocery brands in the country.

Melanie Perkins just proved you don’t need Silicon Valley to build a $42B tech giant.

Her design platform Canva turned a side project from Australia into a global staple with 240M users, and now, it’s minting employees into millionaires through a rare $42B share sale. Some staff cashed out as much as $3M in equity.

Why this matters:

Female-led unicorns at this scale are rare, and Perkins is now one of the richest women in techCanva’s employee-first equity approach boosts retention while rewarding loyalty.

- With an IPO likely in 2026, Canva’s valuation already beats Figma’s pre-IPO numbers
- Perkins and co-founder Cliff Obrecht pledged to give away 80% of their stake to philanthropy

A tech empire built on design, impact, and equity, literally.

These kids are alright.

New York’s newest housing breakthrough didn’t come from a startup or the city. It came from two teenagers who were tired of watching people they love get priced out.

Brooklyn high schoolers Beckett Zahedi and Derrick Webster built Realer Estate, a free AI platform that finds hidden rent-stabilized and undervalued apartments across NYC.

What started as frustration over endless, unaffordable apartment hunts turned into a tool that’s already helping thousands of renters save money and stay in their neighborhoods.

Even the mayor is shouting them out, and for good reason. When the system fails New Yorkers, New Yorkers build their own solutions.

Starting next month at the Milan Cortina Olympics, every U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athlete will receive $200,000 in long-term financial benefits for each Games they compete in.

The program is funded by billionaire investor Ross Stevens, who donated $100 million to create the Stevens Financial Security Award, the largest gift in the history of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee.

Here’s how it works:

 • $100,000 is paid out over four years, starting 20 years after an athlete’s first Olympic appearance or at age 45, whichever comes later
 • Another $100,000 is guaranteed to their family after death
 • Athletes earn $200,000 for every Games they compete in.

Three Olympics equals $600,000

The move addresses a long-standing reality: nearly 90% of Team USA athletes live paycheck to paycheck, despite training full-time and representing the country on the world’s biggest stage.

This may permanently change how elite athletes are supported after the spotlight fades.

In a world of apps, pickups, and drive-thru optimization, In-N-Out is going the other way.

The California-based chain says it will not add online ordering or pickup, despite years of pressure to modernize.

Owner Lynsi Snyder says the reason is simple. The brand is built on customer interaction, freshness, and consistency, and going digital would take away from that.

Instead of speed and convenience, In-N-Out is doubling down on what made it successful in the first place. Real people, made-to-order food, and a controlled experience from start to finish.

It’s a rare move in 2026, where most chains are racing toward automation and mobile-first ordering.

California real estate just went to auction.

San Diego County is putting 686 tax-defaulted properties up for online sale March 13–18, with some starting bids as low as $100.

The list includes 550 timeshares, 70 improved properties and 66 unimproved parcels. To participate, bidders must register by March 5, submit a $1,000 refundable deposit and pay a $35 processing fee.

If every property sells at minimum bid, the county could generate more than $18 million in tax revenue.

All sales are final, and current owners still have until March 12 at 5 p.m. to pay what they owe and pull their property from the auction.

So yes, you technically could bid on California property next month. Just read the fine print first.

You can find all the bidding info at the SDTTC website.

A new Forbes ranking based on employee feedback put the grocery chain ahead of companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple.

The list looks at things like pay, culture, benefits, and career growth, based on surveys from hundreds of thousands of workers.

Other top companies include St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia, with tech and healthcare dominating the list.

For midsize companies, homebuilder Toll Brothers took the top spot.

This might be the most San Francisco startup story ever.

The AI insurance company behind @corgi.cafe.sf, the viral 24/7 founder cafe in FiDi, just became a unicorn after raising $160 million at a reported $1.3 billion valuation.

The cafe has become a gathering spot for startup founders, coders, and VCs working late into the night, with branded “founder drinks,” laptops everywhere, and an atmosphere that reportedly feels somewhere between a hackathon and a coffee shop.

Meanwhile, a Forbes profile revealed that the company itself has embraced an intense startup culture, including 7-day work weeks and conference rooms with mattresses for employees pulling all-nighters.

Inspiring? Dystopian? That depends on how many startup founders you know.
