ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER DEATHLY ADAGE ✨ Vaganova adage is very hard and needs to be so precise. Here working my BFF and getting her legs stronger. We love pushing each other. We laugh, we work hard and we have fun. Find those teachers and friends who push you further! In all honesty I used to HATE adage. My legs were crying having to try to hold them up, shaking and sweating like a pig ( similar to Jessie at my intensive 💪🏻) it’s so so hard. Are you a sweater?? 💦 I sweat SO much in class. It’s so worth it though because in the end I absolutely love adage and it’s so enjoyable to watch when you have the strength, flexibility and freedom of movement to do it! Because how often do people get to see up close how it can be done? How often do you get to have live demonstration from someone who can still “do it” to a high level? Let me tell you it’s quite rare. So while I can, I will because ultimately I love to dance and I love to share my passion with others, inspire and motivate. WE ALL HAVE THAT LEO THAT “HELPS” CLASS 😅✨ I used to have very very specific leotards I would wear for class - so much so I really believed I would do a better class and I often did!! It goes to show, it’s not about what you wear but how it makes you feel! Do you feel confident in that outfit today? Do you feel inspired to be the best dancer you can be. MY VAGANOVA DREAM ✨LIFE DOESN’T ALWAYS GO TO PLAN ✨ my dream when I was a child was to go to the vaganova Academy. I obsessed over it. Throughout my entire training, I would watch YouTube videos of my favourite ballerinas every evening. I had a Russian coach on the weekends, I was working seven days a week. When I finally got there, I thought everything was going to align and everything would work out. DID YOU REALLY DO A BALLET CLASS? 😅 While I do love barre workouts ( I used to teach amazing office ladies in their lunch break when I first started my teaching journey ) and gosh were those legs shaking!!! I’ve seen a lot of posts on how ballet is the “easy” thing to do between barre and ballet. Ballet is SOO much harder for many reasons, number one being the precision and technique needs to be so precise, aesthetically beautiful and easy to watch! We can’t show effort. It’s next level hard which is why it takes so long to master. I love both things but I suggest if you haven’t tried ballet try it! It’s so fun, rewarding, artistic and extremely technical and if you get the ballet bug, it’s all consuming and you will never look back! FOCUSED EYES MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE ✨ Having focused eyes makes a huge difference when you dance. This can be trained and should be already in every class exercises you do. It’s not something we add on later so much. We think about it NOW. Not only does it look confident but it looks so much better. What made my teachers so good at VAGANOVA was their honesty, blunt feedback and attention to detail and perfection. In ANY school you can get teachers who don’t know the boundaries and take things to far and if this post gets thst conversation going then good! WE CAN IMPROVE. LET’S TRY ✨ This post is about improvement. You don’t need to become super flexible. In the Russian school it was favoured. I wasn’t flexible so I put some effort in to stretch as I wasn’t. Surprisingly I improved a lot! This is not to say everyone will get super duper flexible but I think everyone can improve in their own way, and do what works for them with the right guidance around you and safely. I get so many comments saying, it is luck and some of us can’t do that. It wasn’t luck nobody believed in my skill, that nobody thought I’d have enough turnout. It wasn’t luck I decided to improve it. I used to look at Svetlana Zakharova and think, no way will I be like that. I accepted it. For a while. But then I decided to try. You can do the same, for turns, for jumps, for studying !! Yes there’s genetics that help. But hard work helps more. Let’s focus on improving, the rest will come. If you knew the amount of stretching and conditioning I did… the hours alone. You wouldn’t call it luck. As adults we place so many learned limitations on ourselves from our beliefs and surroundings. We rationalise our way out of situations, out of being able to do something. Balet aside it can be anything! I dare you to dream big and go after what you want! BARE FOOT IN HER POINTE SHOES ✨😅 INÈS MCINTOSH PARIS OPERA FIRST SOLOIST I had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful artist recently, asking her many many questions all of which you will hear soon but one thing that stood out to me was how Inès prepared her shoes and the fact she went completely bare foot in her shoes, no plasters, nothing! WHAT IS A WINNING BALLET VARIATION? 🩰✨ I once met a student ( she wasn’t my student ) who couldn’t understand why her variation didn’t win, she was so fixated on winning, and showing off the melt technique, that when someone ‘won’ with a somewhat, on the surface, ‘unimpressive’ variation, she couldn’t wrap her head around it. Well this ‘unimpressive’ variation, showed so much. Star quality, control, musicality, aplomb, dynamic and maturity. I thought this was yet another great lesson for younger students. Tricks don’t equal better. I remember Plisetskaya once said, “I danced white swan, and nobody asked what this was about, I danced Don Q and suddenly everyone asked, they were impressed by the fouettés, but this is just tricks, it’s not art, and if I wanted to do tricks I probably should do them better and do 100 fouettés” I am roughly translating, but it’s a good message to hold on to. Let’s remember that. Of course there are some amazing variations, that require more tricks, but that’s what those are tricks, while they are important to do well they aren’t the everything…otherwise dance becomes very boring suddenly. WHAT IS A WINNING BALLET VARIATION? 🩰✨ I once met a student ( she wasn’t my student ) who couldn’t understand why her variation didn’t win, she was so fixated on winning, and showing off the melt technique, that when someone ‘won’ with a somewhat, on the surface, ‘unimpressive’ variation, she couldn’t wrap her head around it. Well this ‘unimpressive’ variation, showed so much. Star quality, control, musicality, aplomb, dynamic and maturity. I thought this was yet another great lesson for younger students. Tricks don’t equal better. I remember Plisetskaya once said, “I danced white swan, and nobody asked what this was about, I danced Don Q and suddenly everyone asked, they were impressed by the fouettés, but this is just tricks, it’s not art, and if I wanted to do tricks I probably should do them better and do 100 fouettés” I am roughly translating, but it’s a good message to hold on to. 3 THINGS FOR TRIPLE PIROUETTES ✨💪🏻 When you start to do multiple turns - there is more than just a sense of balance. We have to find - Dynamic, maintain out alignment throughout ( keep working everything ) and understand where force comes from without losing our form. When we understand, we can practice and try to train these muscle patterns so we can repeat it again and again! Therfor getting consistent. If you do 3 good turns randomly but don’t know why they worked, therefor can’t repeat them then this is the tip for you! Part of being consistent is being knowledgeable and practiced enough! 3 THINGS FOR TRIPLE PIROUETTES ✨💪🏻 When you start to do multiple turns - there is more than just a sense of balance. We have to find - Dynamic, maintain out alignment throughout ( keep working everything ) and understand where force comes from without losing our form. When we understand, we can practice and try to train these muscle patterns so we can repeat it again and again! Therfor getting consistent. If you do 3 good turns randomly but don’t know why they worked, therefor can’t repeat them then this is the tip for you! Part of being consistent is being knowledgeable and practiced enough! BALLET DANCERS ARE DIFFERENT NOW 💪🏻✨ I think nowadays we value so much our health and longevity both in our career and life. Injuries and setbacks can change our lives and so we act from a place of much more gratitude now. Not only this but we want to be as great as we can! HOW CAN WE MAKE ADAGE EASY ✨ Growing up, I wanted to have easy, free legs to lift. I honestly thought I would NEVER have legs like Svetlana Zakharova but then one day, I decided not to give up. I knew I had to work harder. In class I tried my absolute best. When I moved to vaganova I was so intimidated by the level of adage the other girls had. It looked so easy, I thought will I ever get there?! I conditioned, I pushed through the long holds and I stretched. I went from the least flexible where I still couldn’t do the splits at 13 to becoming insanely flexible. It’s not enough to stretch, you need the right alignment, and strength in the body to access your core and turnout which will help you get the higher legs you desire! HOW CAN WE MAKE ADAGE EASY ✨ Growing up, I wanted to have easy, free legs to lift. I honestly thought I would NEVER have legs like Svetlana Zakharova but then one day, I decided not to give up. I knew I had to work harder. In class I tried my absolute best. When I moved to vaganova I was so intimidated by the level of adage the other girls had. It looked so easy, I thought will I ever get there?! I conditioned, I pushed through the long holds and I stretched. NEVER FALL OUT OF TURNS AGAIN 🙌✨ If you’re ever wondering how to land your turns well in fourth, this can really help you! Whilst it may look obvious initially, once you train your brain and body how to land, we end up not seeing it at all. I always say, your leg won’t plié by itself! So allow yourself to plié on that leg. You’ll be surprised how “off the leg” you initially will be if you have a habit of falling.
