Spent the afternoon in Kris’ iconic living room brainstorming how we build bridges and introduce more communities to the brilliance of @abdulelsayed. “Money out of politics. Money in your pocket. Medicare for All.” That has long been his message. But behind those words is a much bigger commitment: justice and equality, economic dignity, healthcare for everyone, and reproductive freedom. We cannot cross the finish line in November using the same playbook from the primary. This next chapter requires opening new doors, building new relationships, showing up in communities that haven’t always felt seen—and listening to people where they are. I believe Abdul can do it. And I believe more people will see what so many of us already do when they have the opportunity to know him. If you’re still unsure, what do you need to hear or see from him? My greatest revenge has always been my success—not against other people, but against my doubt, my imposter syndrome, and that small voice that once insisted I’d never become anything. Deep down, I always knew that wasn’t true. And in the end, my greatest success isn’t a title or accomplishment—it’s the family @leannemertzman and I have built together. We are deeply in love with the life we’ve created, and we’ve stayed committed to each other and our children through every season. Queer ladies, how many times have you had to explain to your OBGYN that yes, you’re sexually active... and no, you don’t need birth control because your current sexual practices don’t put you at risk for pregnancy? And then do it again the next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. It’s such a small interaction, but it’s a reminder that our healthcare system still defaults to cisgender, heterosexual assumptions. You shouldn’t have to come out, explain yourself, or defend your sex life just to get appropriate care. and yes, of course, there are 1 million reasons that queer women can still be on birth control if they choose. I’m sure you are a “Jesus follower” too. Anyway, I was sick with cancer. And we had a swim instructor who was a college student teaching our very scared 3 year old how to swim. So yea, Leanne wore a mask to protect me. So did the swim instructor. And since you’re a grandmother, I would hope you would do anything in your power to protect your children and grandchildren.
