Happy 2025 ladies ✨✨
In all seriousness, I am delighted to be working with the @pilotmentalhealth campaign to update the FAA’s antiquated policies on mental health. Did you know 27% of pilots have admitted to misreporting their medical history to the FAA? 56% have avoided necessary healthcare for fear of their medicals being pulled.
For women, it’s even worse. 46% of female pilots have foregone medical treatment, 66% have withheld information from their physicians, and 83% have avoided basic healthcare for fear of losing their medical status.
On April 1, 2024 the FAA released the final Mental Health and Aviation Medical Clearances Aviation Rulemaking Committee Recommendations Report (ARC recommendations). As of March 2025 none of these recommendations have been implemented.
There’s a link in my bio that will take you to a site that will guide you through letting your congresspeople know that you want them to support the Mental Health in Aviation Act- which would force the FAA to implement the ARC recommendations within 2 years. One of these crucial recommendations is allowing pilots to seek talk therapy without reporting it to the FAA.
I don’t get in an airplane that isn’t properly taken care of, let’s take care of the pilots who fly them too 💕
(Oh and, this applies to controllers too!)

I couldn’t help it! The joke for this trend is RIGHT THERE. Once a (cedar)stripper always a stripper! 😅 My uncle @ottercreeksmallcraft (who flew in to help me in this video and builds cedar-strip canoes) recently signed an email off “freelance stripper”
ANYWAY here’s a lil sneak preview at the ~Xyla spin~ on the traditional Pietenpol design which is entirely fabric covered. But hey, I think Bernard Pietenpol himself would have done this if fiberglass and epoxy had been invented in the 1920s ;)
And before yall come after me on weight, the entire turtle deck after glassing weighed in at a whopping 2lbs 10 oz including all of the forms. Between all the spruce stringers and blocking, fabric, and dope I’d be surprised if the fabric one is much lighter or even lighter at all. And remember, I weigh a lil less in the tail than the average pilot too ;)

ASMR preflight ✨
I went to go fly on Saturday but ended up making the call during taxi to turn around. Winds were picking up and instead of gusting 20 kts down the runway it was swirling into more of a crosswind. One of the other pilots at the fuel pump who’d just landed in a much larger plane said the downdrafts coming off the hills were really rough, and a bunch of turbulence pireps started popping up. In an emergency I could/would have done it, but I had nowhere to really be, I just wanted to get airborne for a bit now that the rain is over.
I posted it to my stories kind of expecting a bunch of macho “go put your big girl pants on and quit being a little b****” responses but instead I got a surprising number of folks thanking me for normalizing / talking about the No Go decision days too. So… here’s to putting yourself out there I guess. It still feels surprisingly good to just go to the airport, soak up some sunshine, futz around in the hangar, fuel up, preflight, etc.
Something about it’s better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground

The reward for fitting and glueing all the struts? Gussets for daayyyyzzzzz. The gussets are where all the real strength of these joints comes from though so no slackin’ 🫡

“It’s gonna be so heavy!!” “How much weight are you adding??” “This is already a tail heavy airplane, can’t wait to see you die you stupid girl!!”
Here to put all the weight haters to peace. Turtledeck glassed weighed in at 2lb 10oz. I would be veeery surprised if the fabric is lighter than that— remember fabric needs spruce stringers, blocks, and the weight of dope and paint is not insignificant.
And there are plenty of fully plywood sheathed pietenpols flying just dandy ✈️

Finally, my big secret is out! I asked my amazing uncle @ottercreeksmallcraft to come out to LA to spend a week helping me CEDAR STRIP my airplane. There have been a handful of all-plywood sheathed Pietenpols but cedar stripping felt like a Xyla-spin on it that just HAD to happen.
For those new around here, I launched my channel in the peak of the 2020 lockdown from my uncle’s canoe-building workshop in Vermont. We built my beloved canoe together and it’s one of my favorite projects of all time and one of the first videos on my channel.
As I drove my uncle to the airport at the end of the trip, we had a really nice conversation about how fun it was to slip into a seamless flow of working together again, where we really didn’t have to say very much- we already trust each other not to f*@!ck it up. :)

🚨 THE MENTAL HEALTH IN AVIATION ACT (H.R. 2591) JUST UNANIMOUSLY PASSED THE HOUSE! 🚨
This bipartisan bill tackles outdated FAA mental health policies so pilots and controllers can seek care without fear. Huge congrats to @pilotmentalhealth, @repseancasten, @reppetestauber, and EVERYONE who called their reps—your voices were HEARDDD!!
Next stop is the Senate. 🏛️ The best way to help right now? Follow @pilotmentalhealth and donate (link in bio) so we can push this bill to the finish line. We are trying to raise $75k by the end of the year (turns out going to DC for over 200+ congressional meetings and counting, industry events, research, and raising support is expensive!) to keep the momentum going and finish the job. 🇺🇸✈️

Making steady progress on the Pietenpol project! Shaping the tail so that the side walls can be bent in and glued where they meet right on that centerline.

First half of the Pietenpol is glued up! (Actually, so is the second half but I’m a little behind with posting)
And always here to provide controversial glue takes. The scariest thing with wooden airplanes and epoxy is heat and tbh most epoxies have equally scary HDTs.
I waffled a ton and landed on my tried and true @totalboat Thixo, because I wanted a silica thickened high performance epoxy and didn’t want to mix it myself (it’s terrible to breath so I’d need to seriously up my PPE).

Finishing up the rudder on my Pietenpol Air Camper project! The tail feathers are admittedly taking longer than I thought they would, but that probably speaks more to my time estimation skills than the difficulty of the project itself 😅

I literally only posted this reel to use the @thumpasaurusmusic strut song, I only remembered of its existence after gluing and posting about 95% of the struts 😅 (it’s otherwise not that exciting of a video I’ll admit)

It took me forever to post this Reel because tbh I didn’t want to. Posting mistakes is hard and this was a pretty easy one to make, plus it feeds into all the old crotchety men on Facebook who are praying for me to crash and die because I didn’t use like casein glue or bubblegum from the 1920s to glue this thing together 😅 but hey! Inadvertent pull test, @totalboat Thixo epoxy wins 😬 (I’ve been painting the glue surfaces with high performance medium epoxy first for penetration and then gluing with thixo)
I filmed it horizontal for the YouTube video that will come out eventually, but the toughest part with this fix was ensuring it was perfectly square and aligned again in the reglue up. It didn’t really twist but I was very paranoid that it would/did haha.

Airplane progress! I was so head-down on building that I fell behind editing these videos for a week or two, but I’m back on it 🫡
I would say “any guesses on my turtle deck surprise??” but anyone who’s been watching my stories already knows 😉
