I wanna try every hobby + learn everything 👾

So I’m building an app for people like me, with @trycursor.

It’s an ambitious app, and I’ve pivoted it recently (full story on my next YouTube video). This kind of app would need a full team a few years ago, but I’m using Cursors new look around agents, to build it out.

Follow along to see this journey from building, marketing and releasing it out in the wild

Exploring what ‘AI-powered’ actually means through LeetCode challenges and a deep dive with @ibm’s Quantum Ambassador on building smarter businesses with AI.

I flew to London to hang out with Luke Johnson, a Data and AI Technical Sales SME. We spoke about what success actually looks like in AI for a business (i.e not just putting AI powered on your website 💀), and how a business can integrate AI deeply into their processes. Not AI theatre (surface level use of it, with small superficial benefits).

IBM has implemented AI in businesses like Wimbledon, transforming their processes internally and externally for the fans, so they practice what they preach.

Link in bio to learn more about what makes a Smarter Business.

You’re a Software Engineer and can’t work from home anymore

True story, I was once working from home and went to Thailand randomly.

But I didn’t tell the company In was working for (it was a train wreck of a company anyway). But they laid me off whilst I was there.

To my surprise they said I could finish early, and not work my notice period and I had to send the laptop the next day 😅

Ib - @ellisflurry (follow them!) software engineer edition. I watched their reel and it reminded me exactly of this old engineer I used to work with so felt compelled to make a SWE version

Nerd vs Hackers part 3 : a CyberSecurity series

Your webcam, baby monitor, or smart device could be streaming to the world, without you knowing.

Tools like Shodan.io scan the internet for unsecured devices, making it fairly easy for hackers to peek into your home.

*There are certain searches you can perform on shodan to access random webcam feeds (these are all over youtube)*

How to protect yourself:
- Change default usernames & passwords immediately
- If you’re paranoid AF like me, cover webcams if you aren’t using them with tape
- Disable remote access if you don’t need it
- Keep firmware & software up to date
- Use a firewall and secure your network
- Never expose smart devices directly to the internet

An aim of the app I’m building (@thepolymathapp ) is to reconnect with this part of myself.

Does alcohol make you better at coding? 👾🍷

I did the research so you don’t have to.

Who knows the origin of the Ballmer Peak? It speculates that a programmer intoxicated, will reach a peak state of programming skill at 0.1337% blood alcohol content.

Listen I’m not judging, this is just what happens ok. 👾

Some of the logic behind every coding question you have.

(This is not 100% accurate but encapsulates how far we’ve come from Google searches, to the logic involved working with AI)

why are ‘the girlies building Cyberdecks’? 👾

Not sure how long this trend will last for, but it is very fascinating to me. Whilst there are creators doing it for views/the aesthetic, for others there’s real ethics and a politics involved in it. I wonder if the next extension of the trend involves Linux.

give me a second to process this

*the role is going to evolve and be less about writing code, more about the human elements. Validating LLM output, working with others to translate a business needs into a feature or product, ideation. Not necessarily a bad thing, embrace it.

This is not a doomsday post (by an ‘ai influencer’ who’s never worked on a professional codebase in their life and doesn’t understand the role). It’s me mourning that I won’t be hand coding much in the future. Which I will miss. But things change, I wouldn’t want to do the same thing in 10 years time. And change is exciting to. The SWE role will evolve, and I’ve written extensively in my newsletter and also talked about it in my YouTube videos if you’re curious 👾

My simple life as Software Engineer in Bali

I say it’s simple, as I don’t own a car, rarely buy anything materialistic, and prioritise exercising. Whilst building a career, and investing what I earn and prioritising experiences.

I read, gym and code/build things. I travel when I can (I used to be a full time digital nomad, but now only do it when I’m excited to travel or escape the European winter).

I like the idea of disappearing and isolating yourself from the world if you are not happy with where you are.

In 2020, I wasn’t happy with where I was in life. So I did this. I shut myself off from the world and just led a simple life. Went to the gym and studied, sometimes 10 hours a day. That was it pretty much.

Only years later do I appreciate the sacrifice of that time and what it has given me today. Physically, mentally, career wise, financially, the lot.

This caption was originally inspired by a YouTube video from The Maths Sorcerer (altho I changed it a lot in the end, and I don’t know physics lol)

Become an AI Engineer by 2027 👾🤖

comment ‘AI’ for a full list of resources I hand picked.

This role is exploding, and there will likely be more of these than machine learning engineers. This how to become one and build a SaaS

Tech resources I which I knew earlier part 4 👾

This is a really cool react.js site for animations. It’s especially good if you’re making your own app or site (without a design) as you can just copy and paste it in, with minor tweaks.
