A few weeks ago James and I found ourselves in need of transport from deep in the heart of central London, UK to the Cotswolds. Without much thought, we decided a Bentley would be nice. Might as well make it the new Flying Spur Speed, as we had some luggage. Good plan. Negative. Bad plan. The collective wisdom of both of us failed to remember that the Flying Spur is exactly 3 miles long. Which means it quite literally took us as long to get it out of the parking lot near our hotel as it did to drive it out of the entirety of London proper. The good news is that not only could we not hear any of the excessive noise outside because of Bentley’s damn near Rolls level sound deadening, but the passers by also couldn’t hear me inventing new curse words as I tried to avoid curbing wheels that cost more than my house. At one point James quietly reached over and turned on some classical music. Probably after seeing how red my face was. Anyway the Bentley: The Good: Stunning interior. One of the best in the world. You know there’s Audi hiding under there but it’s no lipstick reno. Genuinely special. Thunderous yet sophisticated straight line performance from a - now hybrid - 771hp TTV8. Gearshifts (one of our only previous gripes) are now smoother thanks to that hybrid stuff. A tremendous ride second only to a Rolls as long as you stay out of Bentley mode or Sport mode. They are pointless. True road presence. This car announces your arrival without uttering a single sound. The Bad: The hybrid means great fuel economy but a disastrously small trunk. If Sir and Madame were picked up by a driver from the airport, they wouldn’t be able to store two suitcases in the trunk. So if you were to purchase this car to be driven around in… it’s almost unusable if you travel. In conclusion, A Maybach doesn’t touch it for class. And a Rolls-Royce wouldn’t see where it went. At the quarter million mark, until Aston Martin decide to get back in the four-door game, the Flying Spur Speed owns this very niche marriage of Ultra Luxury and Sport. Still, the frugal part of me still feels the need to declare my undying love for the far less expensive Audi S8. @thomasholland_th

Last time I drove a diesel I was with @thomasholland_th on his honeymoon in Tuscany. Now you probably have questions about that statement so let me clear the air. It was a Ford Fiesta rental car with 75hp and a torque curve that died off immediately after 5K rpm. The diesel I drove before that was a U-Haul. My recent UK loaner was very different to those. For one thing, this Mercedes E450d Estate, despite being 2 cylinders down and with absolutely no AMG badges that I could find, has the same torque number as a BMW M5 CS. 553 lb ft from its hybrid straight-six. Which means even quarter throttle gives you the kick up the arse that I was promised my secondary school would provide, but never did. I also finally understand why my Grand Tour co-host @francis_bourgeois43 has swapped a (non-hybrid) motor with the same formula into his trusty old SL. It’s an absolute peach. The E450d is well mannered, has torque everywhere, is unintimidating to drive and comes with a supple ride thanks to its self-levelling air suspension as standard. Steering is calibrated to feel luxuriously light and seat comfort is strong. I’m told the boot isn’t that impressive for a wagon thanks to the hybrid stuff but I think the novelty of it and the fact that it did me fine meant I could overlook that. The fundamentals are there. However, it still falls victim to some ‘new car’ woes. Among other things, the interior has almost enough screen area to view The Odyssey as Christopher Nolan intended. Even if you could, you wouldn’t want to because of the amount of finger prints and dust it captures. The driver assist functions meant that parking it in my little space in London between two walls caused the car to keep turning off my throttle and slamming on the brakes as I was maneuvering. Very…very unwelcome. It was, however, a perfect family companion for those two weeks. It’s effortless, gets great mileage (40mpg ish) and kept making me say “oof thats bloody quick innit.” Which is good, because even though this particular piece of fruit is forbidden to North Americans, it’s an expensive fruit. £90K-ish as spec’d (US$120 converted). Oof, indeed. Does look nice though. @jamesengelsman

CREW. CREW. CREW. We are halfway through posting the films we made in California and each time we do this sort of trip, one unlucky yet spacious automobile must become the camel to carry our water. The donkey to bear our load. The cow to bring us our…milk? This time, it was the NEW Hyundai Palisade. A model that is really starting to lean into its first two syllables. Beautifully appointed, spacious, clean, and exactly what a Range Rover interior would be if you described it to an alien. The exterior isn’t nearly as clean as the RR though, as some of you may already be reaching with your thumbs to point out. And I get that, the front looks like a rack server in one of those farms that’s ruining the local water supply so that a certain elected official can pretend to beat up Canadians on ice. But it carried our gear and our cronies without complaint. Well, some complaint. But very small. Compared to the British marque it so criminally copies, third row passengers will have to deal with more wind and road noise. It is significantly louder back there than the front two rows. Also, the 2.5L 4cyl hybrid works well, and even feels spritely with 329 hp, but its less-than-musical note ruins the illusion that you are in something much fancier. Otherwise, from the driver’s seat, it genuinely feels every bit its 58K US asking. And that’s for this well spec’d Calligraphy trim. Hyundai knows how to play to their strengths. Even though the price point robs them of fancy air suspension or a sexy powertrain or rear wheel steer, they go ham where they can. Namely the cabin. Highly adaptable comfortable seats, double sunroof, softly sprung ride and all the creature comforts you could ever need are ticked, short of soft-close doors. That, and driver inputs require minimal effort and steering progresses naturally. Everything feels light and airy. Purposeful and honest. With just enough physical knobs to forgive the capacitive stuff. Would we take this over a Toyota Grand Highlander or a Honda Pilot? Dunno, haven’t tried the new ones of those, but this Palisade is good. Curious to try the new Telluride now and not just because of the orange DRLs. @jamesengelsman
