In high school, @petecarroll was the kid who looked like the team mascot. “People passed me up.” He’s still not over it.

He spent the next four years proving who he was, and he says that’s what made him the competitor he became. Decades later, with a Super Bowl won in Seattle, he asked himself what he’d do differently if he got to start over. His answer: he still needs to be coached up. And if he does, so does everybody.

In Episode 2, Pete sits down with @ryanpsweeney to talk about competition, the voice in your head, and how you learn to trust yourself when it counts.

Send this to someone who was ever told they were too small.

Tim Gallwey's idea is simple: performance is your potential minus the interference in your head.

Each episode sits you down with someone who has dealt with that interference at the highest level, so you can trust yourself when your next big event comes.

Every great performer has a moment they almost lost to their own head.

I take them back to it and get the exact words that were in their head.

Most mental performance content tells you to step back from pressure. This show is about stepping into it.

Fifty years ago, Tim Gallwey wrote down the formula: performance = potential − interference. You've already done the work. Your potential isn't the problem. The voice that judges, corrects and tightens you up at the worst possible moment is.

Every episode, people who've lived it — Pete Carroll, Bob Bowman, George Mumford, Brad Stulberg — go back to that moment and tell you what they said to themselves to get through it.

You won't just hear what the best think about pressure. You'll hear what they did in the moment — so you have it when yours comes.

Step into the pressure. Learn from the best. Be ready when it counts.

New episodes every week.

Michael Phelps failed a million times. Bob Bowman saw every one.

Over more than 20 years coaching him, Bob saw how failure usually lands. Athletes feel ashamed and get emotional about it. But that's where the learning happens. Why did we fail? What did I do, what didn't happen, and what will get us to the next level?

Once athletes see failure as feedback, it becomes part of the process of success. And Phelps was "never more motivated than after he had a setback." Get beaten in a race he shouldn't have lost, and it fueled the next six months, every day.

“Everybody works hard. But are you working hard the right way?”

@zallen94 wasn’t a first-round pick. It took him six seasons to make his first All-Pro. Then came a four-year, $102 million extension from the Broncos, and with it, the pressure. He started pressing, saw more double teams than he’d ever seen, and by his own account was not a joy to be around.

What turned it around wasn’t more effort. It was less. A coach reminded him that his best games come when he’s having fun. So he started a ten-minute gratitude practice on Thursday mornings, and it became his best year yet.

And when he’s in a rut, he asks himself one question. What would you have said ten years ago if someone told you that you’d be here? You would kill for this.

Tim Gallwey put the whole idea in one line in The Inner Game of Tennis back in 1974: performance equals potential minus interference.

Pressure is interference, and the show is built on 50 years of learning how to lower it and leverage it.

Where other apps are designed to have you step away from pressure, the Inner Game is built to have you step into it.

@bradstulberg has spent almost 20 years studying excellence, and he defines it simply: being yourself and going all the way.

He draws a line between an excellent result and the process of excellence. The result gets judged by your field. The process is yours. It’s giving the things that matter to you everything you’ve got.

When he asked Grammy-winning musicians how they’d feel if a machine could make their winning song at the press of a button, every one of them said the same word. Empty.

The fulfillment was never in the trophy. It was in making the thing.

Two wolves. One of them is running your nervous system.

George Mumford tells the old parable. A grandfather says there’s a battle going on inside him between two wolves: one is fear, one is love. His grandson asks which one wins. “The one that I feed.”

Then George takes it down to the cell. Bruce Lipton, The Biology of Belief: a cell is either in survival mode or growth mode. It can’t be in both.

The fear wolf lives in survival mode. Your brain goes looking for danger, and nine out of ten thoughts turn negative.

So notice when you’re in survival mode. Then get yourself into growth mode.

His boss said never do that again. Pete did it the next day.

Early in his career, @petecarroll asked his players what they wanted to work on in practice. His boss heard about it and smacked him right in the teeth: you're in charge, you're the coach, "don't you ever do that again."

Pete respected him, loved him, and walked up to his office bummed. Then he sat down and admitted what he'd seen: "That was amazing what happened with those players." So he built the next practice around exactly what they'd asked for.

That was the start of it. The first moment he realized he wasn't as traditional as the hard coaches he grew up under.

Pete tells @ryanpsweeney the story in episode 2 of The Inner Game Podcast.

Send it to the coach who got told to do it the old way.

Every athlete has a voice that gets louder the week of a big event. @george.mumford has spent decades teaching athletes, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant among them, what to do with it.

Tim Gallwey had a name for the fear wolf: interference, the Self 1 voice that judges every shot and tightens you up before you’ve even started. George’s view in this episode: working on your self-talk helps, but changing from survival mode to growth mode is a lot easier, and the self-talk follows.

Bowman’s debrief works because it trades a verdict for a diagnosis. Tim Gallwey made the same point in The Inner Game of Tennis: a slump lasts as long as you keep calling it bad, and seeing a result clearly is what lets the change start. Michael Phelps broke his wrist. It won him a gold medal.

@george.mumford had never met @coach_bowman before this table, but he'd heard the story. Phelps broke his wrist, and Bob's answer was to focus on his leg strength. "Am I wrong?" Bob confirms it: that's what they did, and one of those gold medals Phelps won because of his kick.

For George, that's pure performance: being with what is, as it is, and being yourself authentically. You don't get there by thinking about it. You live into it, by practice and by struggle, by showing up again and again to the life in front of you.

Broken wrist. What am I going to do? "How can I be Michael in this situation?" Bob reminded him that was the job.

Bob and George sit with @heroicbrian and @ryanpsweeney for episode 1 of The Inner Game Podcast.

A Russian kid broke the world record. Michael Phelps was in the next heat.

@coach_bowman goes back to the meet where Phelps first really broke through, five world records at about 16 years old. In Spain, in a butterfly event he hadn’t swum that well, Phelps was in the second semifinal. In the first one, a Russian swimmer went out and set a new world record.

Bob was a floor up, looking down into the ready room. Phelps looked up at him with the kind of look Bob figures Michael Jordan would have had. Bob’s only thought was that the Russian kid was “gonna hold a world record for one minute.”

Bob is one of three coaches at the episode 1 table, with George Mumford and Brian Johnson, hosted by @ryanpsweeney.

Ten years into his run in Seattle, @petecarroll asked himself a question most people never get to ask: if he started over, with all the wisdom and all the scars, what would he do differently?

What hit him wasn’t a scheme or a hire. “I still need to be coached up.” Still learning, still growing, and fine with it. He says it’s the thing that keeps him curious.

Then the second thought, the one that matters for the rest of us: if he still needs it after all those years, who doesn’t?

Freud said a good life comes down to two things: your work and your love. Brian Johnson adds a third, your energy. If you’re not eating, moving and sleeping right, good luck showing up for the other two. Your self-talk runs on your physiology as much as your psychology.

And you’ll never hold all three in perfect balance. Like a tightrope walker, you keep correcting as you go.

Someone can lose an arm and still feel pain where it used to be.

@george.mumford uses phantom limb syndrome to show how closely the mind and body are linked. The brain holds a map of the body, and after a loss that map can take time to change. In his words, “they’re still relating as if their arm is there.”

The same can be true of chronic pain and trauma. When something hard keeps returning to the mind, the body can feel like it’s still there too. That isn’t a weakness. It’s what happens to us as human beings.

He sees visualization as a tool that works in both directions: it can help us heal, or it can keep us stuck. Paying attention to what we hold in mind, with care, is part of the work.

Full conversation is episode 1 of The Inner Game Podcast: George Mumford, Bob Bowman and Brian Johnson around one table with host Ryan Sweeney.
