Weller is back to feeling fine and dandy 💙🌼

After a really rough week, Weller is finally 100% better! Thank you so much for all the kind messages, prayers, and well wishes. I truly appreciate all the love and support you all have shown us time and time again. It warms my heart to know so many people love and care about Weller (and Annie).

Weller’s fecal results came back positive for Campylobacter jejuni… most likely from chicken poop🥴

I had been dogsitting for two weeks prior to Weller getting sick and the sweet family I dogsit for has 3 dogs and 6 chickens. Weller and Annie always go with me to stay at their house because all of the dogs get along great together.

As many of you have seen in some of the stories and reels I’ve posted in the past, Weller is absolutely obsessed with the chickens. He LOVES them. He typically ignores all of the other dogs and instead chooses to follow the chickens around as they free range in the backyard. He’ll happily spend hours watching them and following them around.

The chickens are VERY well taken care of and are super clean. However, I’ve learned that even the healthiest and cleanest chickens (and all poultry for that matter) can be “silent” carriers of Salmonella and Campylobacter, which can, in turn, be present in their droppings.

I never actually saw Weller eating chicken poop and/or licking his paws to clean them, but considering how much time he spent with the chickens for two straight weeks… there was plenty of opportunity. I wiped his paws before he came in the house, but he definitely could have licked them while he was still outside.

I’m so glad we have an answer for what made him so sick. Unfortunately for Weller, this means no more unsupervised chicken time for him when I’m dogsitting for this sweet family. He will only be allowed to be around the chickens if I’m standing right there with him to ensure he doesn’t eat any chicken poop or lick his paws.

The most important thing is my sweet boy is back to being his happy, goofy self and ready to get back to putting a smile on everyone’s face… starting with his iconic dandelion pictures 😉💙🌼

I allowed my heart to be broken, so his heart could heal ❤️

Buster didn’t deserve to die alone in a shelter. He deserved to be in a loving home. To be happy. To be unconditionally loved and cared for. To have someone finally choose him, even knowing a heartbreaking goodbye was right around the corner.

He deserved a peaceful place to land. A final chapter filled with comfort, joy, and unconditional love. I knew I could provide that for him, and I’m so glad I was able to.

I’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Getting the opportunity to experience Buster’s love for 27 wonderful days was worth the tremendous heartbreak that came with saying goodbye to him so soon. He was such a special boy ❤️

If you’ve ever considered adopting a senior pet, take this as your sign to do it. It may be hard, but I promise it will be worth it and you won’t regret it.
________

I still have one more adventure from Buster’s Bucket List that I haven’t posted yet. I plan to post that bucket list video sometime soon along with a fundraiser in honor of Buster.

Thank you again for the outpouring of love and support you’ve shown us regarding Buster’s passing. We appreciate it so much❤️

Over the weekend, we had to say goodbye to our sweet cat, Sullivan💔

Though Sullivan wasn’t largely featured on our social media accounts, he was such a huge part of our family. He was sweet with just the right amount of spice, undoubtedly the boss of the house… and the berners knew it. Every one of our dogs loved him, and he loved them right back.

When Sullivan was diagnosed with lymphoma a little over two years ago, we weren’t sure how much time we’d have with him. We are forever grateful for the extra two years we got to spend together, thanks to our incredible GP veterinarian and Sully’s veterinary oncologist. Those two extra years were such a blessing, though no amount of time could ever be enough.

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Sullivan and his stoic presence in our home will always be missed💜🌈

Thank you for attending this very important meeting. I know I look like a hot mess in this, but this was just too important for me not to share😉

Meet some of our adorable 8 week old fosters from @barcberners “Aviation” crew ✈️

I meant to post this video several days ago, but things quickly took a turn for the worse over the weekend. One of the puppies from the litter, Wings, tested positive for parvo and had to be hospitalized at an emergency vet clinic. She is currently in critical condition fighting for her life ❤️‍🩹

Due to the highly contagious nature of parvovirus, and the level of exposure each of these puppies had, all 9 other puppies had to be treated prophylactically with the parvo monoclonal antibodies.

One of the puppies I was fostering, Pilot, was also severely anemic due to him having coccidia. With his positive coccidia results, the rest of the litter also has to be treated for that as well.

Parvo has a 14 day incubation period, so unfortunately, we won’t know if we are in the clear for another 11-12 days. We are hoping and praying that Wings continues to improve with the around the clock care at the emergency vet clinic and we hope the other puppies were treated soon enough with the parvo antibodies that their bodies can fight off this potentially fatal virus.

Between Wings being hospitalized multiple days and nights, treating 10 puppies with the parvo antibodies, as well as treating 10 puppies for coccidia, the vet bills BARC has taken on in the past 72 hours are now totaling in the several thousands already. BARC could really use your help to save Wings and the other puppies. I will share a donation link to my stories, if you are able to donate. Another way to help is to share @barcberners recent post about Wings so more people can see it!

*Any donations beyond the costs needed for this litter will be used to cover the vet expenses for other berners in need. BARC has several other owner surrenders that are needing some major orthopedic surgeries soon and BARC is having to cover those expenses as well (bilateral TPLO, a total hip replacement, and bilateral elbow scopes).

Here are 3 tricks I use daily with Weller, beyond the basic commands like sit, stay, place, and come.
(Banana knows the 1st one… when she feels like it😂)

1. BACK UP (aka beep beep):
If you have a stage 5 clinger/velcro dog, you know they are always right beside you. I use our “back up” or “beep beep” command if I need Weller and Annie to move out of the way. In the kitchen, I also use Weller’s “place” command a lot too, but there are some situations outside of the kitchen, that I don’t have a spot for him to go to for his “place.”

*Weller typically barks at me during this one. I think he thinks it’s a part of the trick and I’m not sure how to get him to stop, so if you have any advice, I’m all ears. It honestly doesn’t bother me though.

2. FIX IT:
I taught Weller this one as soon as I started teaching him leash manners as a puppy. My previous senior rescue berner, Gita, would always wrap herself around a mailbox or light pole on walks, then refuse to move until you dropped her leash or walked around whatever it was to fix it for her.
This one helps the most when I’m walking both him and Annie together.

*Weller can walk in a perfect “heel” (on both sides—I have a different command for each side) when asked, which avoids him wrapping himself around something in the first place. However, I very, very rarely have him walk in a heel like a robot. We don’t live in a big city where that would be necessary and our walks are Weller and Annie’s time to sniff and enjoy.

3. STAND:
I think we can all agree that dogs know how to find the most inconvenient places to lie down. Weller likes to plop down in front of the cabinet doors and/or refrigerator when I’m cooking, so I use this one a lot.

This is one is also great for grooming! I use Weller’s “stand” command a lot during baths and when I’m blow drying him!

What are some tricks/commands that you use most for your dogs!?

*Disclaimer: I am NOT a dog trainer*

Best $45 I’ve ever spent 🥹🦈

In honor of Shark Week starting today, I figured I’d share this throwback of Weller and Mr. Sharkie. I bought the giant hammerhead shark plushie for him back in November of 2022 and it’s still going strong (with a few extra stains lol).

Mr. Sharkie is actually a children’s body pillow, not a dog toy. I found it at HomeGoods back in 2022 and it was made by FAO Schwarz. I’ve never been able to find another one like it 😭

(@faoschwarz if you see this and happen to have any extra Mr. Sharkies lying around, I would happily pay for another one😉)

I love how these turned out🥹❤️

I’m SO proud of Annie! Last year she was far too scared of the wrapping paper to participate, so I only did it with Weller. I figured she would still be scared this year, so I wasn’t planning to even attempt taking pictures of her— I will never purposely put my dogs in a situation they are uncomfortable with for a silly picture.

To my surprise, Annie decided she was a brave banana this year and pushed Weller out of the way and shoved her head right through the paper… she obviously had to make sure she didn’t miss out on getting some extra treats too 😆

Early last week when Buster was still feeling well, he got to have another big Bucket List Day. He had the best day relaxing in his ice pool, sipping on his bone broth pup-a-rita, and enjoying all of his favorite treats on his barkcuterie board ☀️ sponsored

I’m so glad he got to check off another item on his bucket list while he was still feeling up to it. I miss getting to spoil this sweet boy, but I’m so happy we made so many wonderful memories during our short time together. Buster was such a special boy.

Thank you @chewy for helping Buster check off one last bucket list item 💙

Four years with my favorite boy 🖤

HAPPY GOTCHA DAY, WELLER!
I can’t believe this boy has been my best friend and sidekick for four whole years. The past four years have flown by in the blink of an eye. They say time flies when you’re having fun, and I think we can all agree that Weller knows how to make life fun 😉

He’s been through more than any dog should ever have to go through in 4 short years— vet visit after vet visit, being diagnosed with angular limb deformity at just 16 weeks old, being diagnosed with severe bilateral elbow dysplasia as well as severe bilateral hip dysplasia, and ultimately having to undergo two total hip replacements. He’s never let any of that get in the way of his happiness and he’s continued to make me and millions of people on the internet smile along the way.

4 years ago, I was supposed to rescue another senior female berner… I never in a million years expected to adopt a male puppy through the rescue, but I’m so glad I did. Weller was exactly what I needed without me even knowing it. I truly don’t know what I’d do without my goofy boy. I’m so thankful and feel so lucky that he’s mine🥹🖤

Weller’s gotcha day was actually yesterday, but the day got away from me after taking our 3 foster puppies to the vet for a few tests and their next round of shots. Trying to wrangle 3 wild puppies is quite the task. Lol

Buster is refusing to eat any dog food right now, so I figured this was a great item on Buster’s Bucket List to check off first. Nothing like eating a $2 frozen burrito for dinner while your dog enjoys a full “surf and turf” meal😂

Buster has done really well the past two days. He’s been eating steak, mahi mahi, salmon, pork chops, lean ground beef, and scrambled eggs. He also loves goldfish crackers 😆

For those that don’t know his story, Buster is an 11.5 year old hospice bernese mountain dog that I adopted from @tuscarawascountyhumanesociety last weekend. Buster has lived a very hard life and has never been cared for like he deserved.

I took him in to my incredible vet, @snodgrass_vet, and we did bloodwork, xrays, and an ultrasound to see where we were at health wise. We found that Buster has tumors on his heart and spleen, most likely hemangiosarcoma, and he was severely anemic as a result. This type of cancer is highly malignant and aggressive. Buster received a blood transfusion and was hooked up to fluids most of the day before coming home a couple days ago.

Buster doesn’t have much time left, but rather than counting down the days, we are trying to make every day count. Buster deserves to know what the good life is all about, so we are going to make the most of whatever time we are blessed with.

Follow @thebernerbunch to watch this sweet old man finally experience the love and care he’s always deserved in his final chapter ❤️
