How to contain a square.

To make this video we examined all of the interesting hinged containers in our office: an airpods case, a pack of 🚬, an old toolbox, and of course our own Summit Card Case. Each of them has its own way of overcoming the problem of lids crossing the interior volume.

And so, we encourage you to take a closer look at the hinged things in your life: are they utilizing a higher hinge, dead space, or a swooped lid to make it work?

Not all containers are the same.

A solution for fidgeters.

A lot of pens are ruined if you mistakenly (or unconsciously) bend the clip past its elastic limit. It's especially problematic if you can't disassemble the parts.

We kept this in mind when designing our money clip. If case of fidgeting or abundant cash accumulation, you can bend the clip across itself to revive the original form.

It's just a little thing, but every millimeter counts when you're trying to keep your money (or pens) securely clipped.

The first plastic injection molded scissors were made in the 1960s. Since then, this sheet metal and plastic design has slowly replaced the solid metal scissors of the past. They are cheaper and easier to manufacture.

At Craighill, we want our everyday objects to be durable, satisfying, and inspiring. So, we sought to create a more contemporary version of the scissors our grandparents owned.

The result is a pair of scissors that doesn't cut any corners (in manufacturing or design).

We hope you enjoy.

Redesigning the ubiquitous waiter's corkscrew began by partnering with sommelier @andrehmack.

André brought us some of his favorite wine key samples from around the world and shared his expansive knowledge of what makes a great wine opener.

We worked hard to combine his chosen details and more into a cohesive multi-tool that we now call The Best Wine Key.

We hope it brings you as much joy as it has for us.

Carabiners got no chill.

If you firmly nudge the side of our Wilson Keyring, it springs open to its natural and relaxed form for easy threading of your keys.

We're making the most of all that tension.

To prevent creasing: hyperbolic paraboloid.

Many headphone stands with a simple bar or hook design can slowly crease and damage your headphone band over time.

We found that the Pringle shape was the perfect form to match a headphone band's curve and ensure no creasing occurs.

We love this form and are curious to know: what other objects share this saddle geometry?

Becoming undeformable.

Last week, we posted a horizontal version of this video to YouTube (check it out) and learned from our audience that two pens use a similar wire gate clip - the UniBall One and the Tombow Airpress. We made this video without knowledge of their existence. "If you build it, they will come" - "they" being the pen experts of the world to explain that we weren't the first.

So, we aren't the first to make a wire gate pen, but we are the first to make a cool video about it. May it serve as a guiding light to pen manufactures worldwide.

We want more wire gates.

Let us know what you think of this direction because it could become the clip on our next pen design.

Unleash your potential.

The swoop-down lid on our Summit Card Case doesn't intersect the internal volume, allowing you to use every cubic inch for whatever you want.

So, what would you put in here?

Extremely good at doing nothing.

In our effort to make the most precise and stable pocket-sized scale figure on Earth, we decided to use Invar.

Invar is a Noble Prize-winning alloy known for having an exceptionally low coefficient of thermal expansion. When exposed to great changes in temperature, the material hardly expands or contracts.

Machined into a cube with tolerances 1/4 the thickness of a sheet of paper, the Invar Cubic Inch is the most dimensionally stable and indisputably precise object we have ever held.

It's our scale figure of choice when we're photographing samples, references, and final products. We made it years ago to satisfy our impractical, but uncontrollable, desire for precision in-studio. Now, we are bringing it back in a limited run for everyone to enjoy.

Invar Cubic Inch for scale.

(Thank you @this_kebun for modeling and printing Hunter's cubic inch holster. This does not come included with the product, but I'm sure Kevin would share the files if you wanted them.)

It needs a tab.

So, we gave it one!

File tabs, battery ribbon tabs, drink seal tabs, and now, split ring tabs, help you identify the access point and get in there.

They're all around us, but there could be more. What needs a tab in your life?

Sometimes new designs hold onto old features that are no longer necessary.

Your typical catchall has a lip, is largely flat, and is made from a hard material. This works great as a food tray, but for a catchall tray, it's not ideal. Your stuff is rarely "caught" neatly and the loud noise is not nice to hear, especially at night.

So, we made some tweaks to create the tray we wanted by our bedside tables and near our front doors. The Little Cloud Tray softly catches your pocket dump (or other valuable things) and keeps it all organized until another day returns.

Let us know what you think. Do you miss the lip?

The reason why your trash can tapers.

Most injection-molded objects have a slight taper for easy removal from their mold. This taper is called a draft angle.

You see this design feature in everything from trash cans to phone charging blocks. However, some forms can't be helped by a taper. A plastic screw cap has threads that prevent it from being pulled out of its mold, no matter the draft angle.

So, how do you make a mold for a screw cap that allows the part to be removed without damage? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Same cut, new form.

When we first designed the Ripple Bottle Opener, we only had access to a 2D mill. We had to find a clever way to make the most of it.

Although we have more resources now, we still produce this object using the same manufacturing method. It's an elegant way to create a beautiful form.

Without a goal, you can't score.

We knew what we wanted: an excellent carabiner designed specifically for your keys. Having this clear idea in mind made all the decisions along the way easier to handle.

Often times, our design process isn't this straightforward. We usually figure out and change what we want as we go.

The Coachwhip Carabiner is a rare case where we knew what we wanted and got it. The result is a design that serves its key carrying purpose down to every little decision.

We love this little guy and hope you do too.

One benefit of a smoother transition line is that it allows for a smoother cut.

The jagged cutoff on most vintage scissors can snag itself on the material you are cutting through, especially if it's a longer material. A smoother transition from the blade to the handle helps the scissor slide more cleanly through. The functional difference is very marginal, but we thought it was worth sharing. Mostly, we just think it looks good.

What do you think of this little scissors detail? Was it worth the time?
