How to contain a square.

To make this video we examined all of the interesting hinged containers in our office: an airpods case, a pack of 🚬, an old toolbox, and of course our own Summit Card Case. Each of them has its own way of overcoming the problem of lids crossing the interior volume.

And so, we encourage you to take a closer look at the hinged things in your life: are they utilizing a higher hinge, dead space, or a swooped lid to make it work?

Not all containers are the same.
Not all cheese is round.

Becoming undeformable.

Last week, we posted a horizontal version of this video to YouTube (check it out) and learned from our audience that two pens use a similar wire gate clip - the UniBall One and the Tombow Airpress. We made this video without knowledge of their existence. "If you build it, they will come" - "they" being the pen experts of the world to explain that we weren't the first.

So, we aren't the first to make a wire gate pen, but we are the first to make a cool video about it. May it serve as a guiding light to pen manufactures worldwide.

We want more wire gates.

Let us know what you think of this direction because it could become the clip on our next pen design.

The objects in our lives shouldn't just do their jobs — they should inspire us as well.

Modern lighters lost the magic that vintage lighters possess. Older designs often have these elaborate and clever mechanical interactions to send a spark towards the wick. It's a small miracle that a little tool in our pocket can create fire, so it makes sense to celebrate that moment.

Inspired by these vintage references, we spent two years designing a lighter that doesn't just spark a flame, but that also feels delightful and fun to use.

We hope you enjoy the Swingtop Lighter, available now online.

Even more important than sharp blades is good pivot hardware. As we’ve discussed in previous videos, scissors don’t just cut like a knife. They make use of shear force - each scissor half pulls the material in a different direction and it shears apart. Even if your blades are sharp, a loose fastener prevents a tight pass of the blades, leading to an unsatisfying slice.

The D-shaped sex bolt is our favorite way to solve the problem of unthreading without removing the threads. It ensures a tight and clean shear through years and years of use. And if your scissors ever need servicing, it allows them to be taken apart. Please see the pinned-comment on this video for notes on disassembly.

If you’re in the market for any pivoting object, we recommend taking a close look at the fastener to see if they are designing for unintentional unthreading.

The ideal measuring device for us didn't exist, so we designed a new one. The Metrolog has the right balance of precision, functionality, and beauty, to make it our go-to 90 percent of the time when we need to take a measurement. We use it everyday and hope it can find a place in your practice too.

Let us know what you think below.

Zip ties, socket wrenches, and surprisingly vintage lighters all use ratchet mechanisms to enable motion in one direction only. We loved figuring out how this little part worked so we could bring it into our design. We hope you find it as satisfying as we do.

Vesta cases, sovereign cases, and snuff boxes (all shown above) have fallen out of use with the decline of matches, coins, and snuff. We were attracted to the look and tactility of these Victorian references, so we used them as inspiration to design our own pocketable case for cards (or anything else you can fit inside). The Summit Card Case brings some mechanical satisfaction and material joy to our modern phone-centric daily carry.

Let us know: would you add this to your routine? If not, what's your favorite thing to keep in your pocket?

One benefit of a smoother transition line is that it allows for a smoother cut.

The jagged cutoff on most vintage scissors can snag itself on the material you are cutting through, especially if it's a longer material. A smoother transition from the blade to the handle helps the scissor slide more cleanly through. The functional difference is very marginal, but we thought it was worth sharing. Mostly, we just think it looks good.

What do you think of this little scissors detail? Was it worth the time?

Making cool wallet, cooler.

We have been working on the Summit Card Case redesign for over a year now. We fell in love with the feeling of this cam mechanism and did everything we could to do it justice. The new Summit is more satisfying, more durable, and more secure.

We hope you enjoy!

Comment ✂️ if you want the STL files!

We 3D print a lot of educational props and experiments for our videos and have been thinking about creating a page on our website to host the STLs for all of you to enjoy. Let us know if you'd be interested in that.

And also, which scissors stand is your favorite?

Thanks everyone :)

A flashlight fit for display.

When we were designing the Temple Flashlight, we collected a ton of references: mini EDC flashlights, camping flashlights, cheap plastic flashlights. While many of them were bright, feature packed, and durable, they were often not aesthetically considered enough to leave out on a desk or shelf.

That's exactly why we find ourselves using phone flashlights around the house and on short walks. The real torches are usually hidden away in a toolbox or drawer.

So, we designed the Temple with the essential features (USB-C charging, 3 light intensities, and a durable construction), and most importantly, a form that makes it display-worthy.

We are excited to keep this out on our desks, bedside tables, and entryways, and hope you find a place for it in your home too.

Thanks for watching!

No matter how much testing we do in studio, there will always be surprises when we release a design and begin to use it in our lives. It's been over half a year since we shipped V3 of the Summit Card Case and here are three things we've noticed through daily use:

1) The slip joint closure is more than we expected. Not only does it keep the case securely closed, but it is so satisfying to use that we often find ourselves meditatively playing with it during our commutes and at our desks.

2) The smooth and rounded metal form makes the case way easier to slide in and out of our pocket (compared to your traditional leather card wallet). If we're rushing to catch a subway, the Summit comes out easily without dragging anything with it or catching on our pants. We went with rounded corners primarily because it looked nice - the functional benefit has been a pleasant surprise.

3) For better or worse, now we get asked about our wallet all the time. Some people think it's an old iPod, others think it's a lighter. The best moment is handing it to the inquisitive cashier or bartender and watching them interact with the object for the first time.

There are no negatives yet (which is rarely the case), but that's what happens when you iterate 3 times on a product over 5 years. If you have feedback from your use of the Summit, drop it below. We'll take it into account for V4.
