The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award honours an actor whose contributions go far beyond the screen. That couldn’t apply more to Michael J. Fox.

You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t recognise his roles from Back to the Future to Teen Wolf. But he has also become known as an incredible advocate for finding a cure for Parkinson’s, a disease he was diagnosed with in 1991 at the age of just 29.

In Harcourt, dozens of houses and the town’s Coolstore burned to the ground after the wind change on Friday evening.

“It’s a bit like a kick in the guts,” said CFA member Tyrone Rice. He and his family – all senior members of the town’s CFA – spent the night fighting the fast-moving and unpredictable blaze, even as their own house burned.

For nearly 10 years, the Corkman Irish Pub in Carlton was a scar on the city.

It was a pile of rubble secured only by flapping tarpaulins and court injunctions. But last week, the scaffolding came down on a rendered facade almost identical to the building destroyed in 2016.

Moments after a woman was pulled onto the sand of Sydney’s Coogee Beach with severe wounds to her left leg and arms, a three-metre shark was swimming languidly in the clear water metres from shore.

Stephen Denneny’s drone captured the shark in the shallow water and dappled sunlight, as it slowly swam laps of the bay.

His dad Steve Irwin wrangled crocodiles in his path to American hearts. @robertirwinphotography has channelled the same charm – and the cha-cha – in his drive to promote conservation and kindness.

Now, Irwin’s at a crossroads. After winning Dancing with the Stars US, he will head to South Africa, where he hosts the Australian version of I’m a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here, a gig he committed to only after the series agreed to stop serving native wildlife in its eating challenges. But his stint as a dancing star has opened up a new world, he said, one in which he sees a future more rooted in the arts and working, at least part-time, in the United States.
