In 1971, José-Luis Saavedra Sr. started cooking up his family’s hot sauce recipe in a tiny warehouse in Vernon, California, just a few miles from East LA. He bottled each batch by hand, put on the now-famous charro label, and sold it to local tiendas out of the trunk of his car. No big investors, no corporate help… just pure hustle, corazón, and a dream. By the ’80s, Tapatío was in supermarkets all over California, riding a wave of Mexican-American pride and flavor. Today, it’s a worldwide brand, from taco trucks in LA to kitchens in Japan and it’s still owned and run by the Saavedra family. For Mexican Americans, Tapatío isn’t just hot sauce, it’s proof you can start from nothing and build something that represents your people everywhere.
