Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were killed by a drunk driver the summer before the 2024-25 season in one of the most devastating tragedies the hockey world has experienced in modern memory. Johnny was beloved — not just in Columbus, not just in Calgary where he had his best years, but everywhere anyone had ever watched him play. He was electric, creative, genuinely joyful on the ice, and the kind of player who made you fall in love with hockey all over again just by watching him skate. Losing him and his brother the way they were lost was a wound that the entire sport is still healing from. 💔
