Green is a goth color! Probably even the most goth! The reason I think this is pretty morbid. For about a hundred years it was quietly killing people.
The most wanted green of the 1800s was made with arsenic. They put it in wallpaper, dresses, fake flowers. People were poisoning themselves in their own bedrooms.
Add absinthe to that. The green fairy everyone swore would drive you crazy and green became the color that either poisoned you or drove you mad. People wanted it anyway! 🤘🏻
Why is green goth? Green is the only color that’s alive and dying at the same time. Leaves and mold. Growth and rot in the same pigment. That’s about as goth as a color gets IMO.

Purple has a dark history and relationship with death but black gets all the credit.
The Victorians made grief into a dress code. After a year or more in nothing but black, a woman was finally allowed a little color and the first one was purple. Her jewelry was amethyst.
Go back further and it gets even darker. The original purple came from thousands of crushed sea snails. It cost more than most people made in a year, only royalty could wear it, and for a while, putting it on without royal blood could get you killed.
It is mourning, power, and blood.

A bit of studded belt history (hint: it’s older than punk).
The studded belt started the way that we know it in the US in the 1950s with bikers and greasers. They hand-studded their belts so people would think twice about messing with them. Then punk picked it up in the late 1970s and so on and so forth with many alt subcultures now wearing studded belts. When you put on a studded belt you’re wearing over 70 years of outsider history. I should add that there is earlier history of studded belts just outside the alt subculture space. Didn’t cover that in this video.

There’s a punk club an hour and a half from Sacramento that banned @greenday
It’s called 924 Gilman. It’s a volunteer-run warehouse in West Berkeley that’s been putting on shows since 1986.
Green Day came up at @924gilmanstreet . Their old graffiti is still on a beam above the stage. Then they signed to a major label, put out Dookie, sold around 20 million copies, and got banned. This is why.
