Brown girls, I’m gonna let go of your hand so you can stop letting go of yourself. It’s time to stop abandoning yourself & reframe your mindset. Choosing yourself isn’t disrespectful. Outgrowing expectations isn’t betrayal. Wanting a different life doesn’t mean you’re ungrateful. And being misunderstood doesn’t mean you’re wrong. I spent a lot of time thinking I had to navigate my identity by making everyone else comfortable with who I was becoming. Now I’m learning that maybe navigating your identity isn’t about choosing between where you come from and who you want to be. Maybe it’s about learning how to hold both. So if you’re a brown girl figuring out how to honor your roots, trust yourself, set boundaries, take up space, and become someone you weren’t necessarily taught to be… consider this your sign to stop asking for permission. And if this felt a little too personal, send it to the brown girl who needs to hear it too.
