The California High-Speed Rail Authority’s 2026 Draft Business Plan says construction is moving forward in the Central Valley, where track installation and electrification have begun. If things stay on schedule, the first operating segment between Merced and Bakersfield could open in 2032. Once fully built, the trains are expected to reach speeds of about 220 mph, making them the fastest passenger rail system in the United States. Not as fast as Japan, but we're getting there. So yeah… SF wins the U.S. title. But globally? Europe is still lapping everyone, with the top 5 including Copenhagen, Helsinki, Geneva, Uppsala and Tokyo.
