California just released a new update on its long planned high-speed rail project that could eventually connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in about 160 minutes.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority’s 2026 Draft Business Plan says construction is moving forward in the Central Valley, where track installation and electrification have begun. If things stay on schedule, the first operating segment between Merced and Bakersfield could open in 2032.

Once fully built, the trains are expected to reach speeds of about 220 mph, making them the fastest passenger rail system in the United States. Not as fast as Japan, but we're getting there.

The project was first approved by California voters back in 2008, but it has faced years of delays, funding debates, and cost overruns, and the latest plan is now open for 60 days of public review.

By the way, we have a weekly newsletter with what's worth knowing about and doing in Los Angeles and San Francisco. One newsletter. Once a week. Link in bio.

It’s official: A League of Their Own just went pro ⚾
️
The Women’s Professional Baseball League will launch in 2026, with its first teams based in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. The league was co-founded by Justine Siegal, who made history as the first woman to coach professional men’s baseball.

This will be the first professional women’s baseball league in nearly 30 years, and the first of its kind since the days of A League of Their Own. It’s fully women-run, nationally broadcast, and built from the ground up to change what America’s pastime looks like.

From movie myth to modern milestone, the next era of baseball belongs to women. Would you go to a game in your city?

Now THIS is going to be a show.

For just the third time in the storied history of the Golden Gate Bridge, fireworks will launch from the iconic landmark as San Francisco celebrates America’s 250th birthday on July 4th.

The last time fireworks were launched from the bridge was in 2012 during its 75th anniversary celebration. Before that, the spectacle only happened once before, for the bridge’s 50th anniversary in 1987.

The display is scheduled to begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., with viewing opportunities from spots like Crissy Field, Marina Green, Pier 39, and the northern Embarcadero.

It’s not every year one of the world’s most famous bridges becomes a fireworks launchpad.

Women’s professional baseball is entering a new era.

The Women’s Pro Baseball League has officially unveiled the names and logos for its first four franchises ahead of its inaugural season this August.

Rather than choosing traditional mascots, every team is named after a woman who helped break barriers in history, celebrating pioneers in civil rights, medicine, firefighting advocacy and baseball.

The league’s first game takes place on August 1, with the New York Heights taking on the Los Angeles Queens, followed by the San Francisco Firebells and Boston Hunters the next day.

By the way, we round up the biggest stories every week into one newsletter so you don’t have to. One newsletter. Once a week. Link in bio.

San Francisco just shattered a 103-year-old temperature record.

Sunday’s high never climbed above 50 degrees, beating the previous coldest Nov. 30 on record from 1922. The culprit? Days of thick Tule fog drifting in from the Central Valley and trapping moisture near the surface.

The chill is statewide. Parts of Southern California are under freeze warnings, surf along the coast is hitting 10–20 feet, and king tides are set to bring minor coastal flooding through the week. Offshore winds will return midweek, briefly clearing the fog before temperatures settle back into a colder-than-normal pattern.

Stay warm out there.

One of San Francisco’s best days outdoors just got even better.

The new Golden Gate Dozen connects 12 iconic national park sites into one continuous 13-mile route stretching from Crissy Field to Fort Funston.

Along the way you’ll pass some of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Baker Beach, Lands End, Sutro Baths and Ocean Beach, all linked together by existing trails, sidewalks and park paths.

The full route takes around 4.5 to 5 hours to complete on foot, but you can also tackle it in smaller sections or explore it by bike.

Complete the trail and you can even pick up a limited-edition Golden Gate Dozen sticker at select visitor centers along the route.

For 100 years, the public couldn’t step foot here.

Now, one of California’s most untouched coastlines is finally open.

The Estero Americano Coast Preserve, a 547-acre stretch where Marin and Sonoma meet, has officially opened for free public access after being privately managed for a century. Think tidal marshes, wild coastline, spring wildflowers, and panoramic views straight to Point Reyes.

The trail welcomed visitors for the first time late last year, and now it’s fully open to hiking access.

No tickets. No reservations. Just walk in via the Shorttail Gulch Coastal Access Trail near Bodega Bay and explore one of the rarest things left in California: land that stayed wild.

Save this for a Northern California road trip 🌊

A massive act of generosity is about to change life for more than 261,000 Californians.

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Miranda Kerr made a multimillion-dollar donation to nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, helping erase $550 million in medical debt across the state. Californians whose debt has been cleared will start receiving letters in mid-July.

The biggest impact was in San Diego County, where the donation relieved about $99 million in debt for 40,369 people. In Los Angeles County, it wiped out $26.7 million for 17,466 people.

In a state where the cost of living already feels impossible, this is the kind of news that can genuinely change someone’s year.

Does SF have the best seat in baseball?

According to the Bleacher Report, it absolutely does.

Oracle Park was just ranked the #1 stadium in MLB by Bleacher Report’s 2026 ballpark rankings.

The full top 5:

1. Oracle Park (San Francisco Giants)
2. Oriole Park at Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles)
3. PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates)
4. Petco Park (San Diego Padres)
5. Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox)

From McCovey Cove home runs to the waterfront views and skyline backdrop, it’s one of the few parks where the setting is just as big as the game.

Even if you’re not a Giants fan, it’s one of those places you kind of have to experience at least once.
