One of the weirdest, coolest things to do in San Francisco is also one of the most important.

Inside Cloudflare HQ, there’s a wall of 100 lava lamps that helps generate unbreakable encryption keys, securing about 10% of all global internet traffic.

And it’s not just for show. A ceiling camera tracks the swirling chaos, turning real-world randomness into digital protection.

And here’s the wild part:
🌐 The lava lamps help protect sites like Uber, OKCupid, and Fitbit
🕶️ Visitors are allowed, and even encouraged, to walk by
💡 The light, movement, and unpredictability you create helps make the internet more secure

In a world of high-tech encryption, sometimes the most powerful tool… is a lava lamp.

California just released a new update on its long planned high-speed rail project that could eventually connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in about 160 minutes.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority’s 2026 Draft Business Plan says construction is moving forward in the Central Valley, where track installation and electrification have begun. If things stay on schedule, the first operating segment between Merced and Bakersfield could open in 2032.

Once fully built, the trains are expected to reach speeds of about 220 mph, making them the fastest passenger rail system in the United States. Not as fast as Japan, but we're getting there.

The project was first approved by California voters back in 2008, but it has faced years of delays, funding debates, and cost overruns, and the latest plan is now open for 60 days of public review.

By the way, we have a weekly newsletter with what's worth knowing about and doing in Los Angeles and San Francisco. One newsletter. Once a week. Link in bio.

It’s official: A League of Their Own just went pro ⚾
️
The Women’s Professional Baseball League will launch in 2026, with its first teams based in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. The league was co-founded by Justine Siegal, who made history as the first woman to coach professional men’s baseball.

This will be the first professional women’s baseball league in nearly 30 years, and the first of its kind since the days of A League of Their Own. It’s fully women-run, nationally broadcast, and built from the ground up to change what America’s pastime looks like.

From movie myth to modern milestone, the next era of baseball belongs to women. Would you go to a game in your city?

San Francisco just shattered a 103-year-old temperature record.

Sunday’s high never climbed above 50 degrees, beating the previous coldest Nov. 30 on record from 1922. The culprit? Days of thick Tule fog drifting in from the Central Valley and trapping moisture near the surface.

The chill is statewide. Parts of Southern California are under freeze warnings, surf along the coast is hitting 10–20 feet, and king tides are set to bring minor coastal flooding through the week. Offshore winds will return midweek, briefly clearing the fog before temperatures settle back into a colder-than-normal pattern.

Stay warm out there.

For 100 years, the public couldn’t step foot here.

Now, one of California’s most untouched coastlines is finally open.

The Estero Americano Coast Preserve, a 547-acre stretch where Marin and Sonoma meet, has officially opened for free public access after being privately managed for a century. Think tidal marshes, wild coastline, spring wildflowers, and panoramic views straight to Point Reyes.

The trail welcomed visitors for the first time late last year, and now it’s fully open to hiking access.

No tickets. No reservations. Just walk in via the Shorttail Gulch Coastal Access Trail near Bodega Bay and explore one of the rarest things left in California: land that stayed wild.

Save this for a Northern California road trip 🌊

After decades of roadkill, California is finally giving wildlife the right of way.

The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, the largest wildlife bridge in the world, is almost complete.

Built above the 10-lane Route 101 near LA, the $90M overpass will reconnect the Santa Monica Mountains and give animals like mountain lions, coyotes, and deer a safe path to cross.

💥 Over 12 mountain lions and 1 black bear were killed trying to cross the freeway
🦁 The project was inspired by the tragic death of LA’s iconic lioness, P-22
🌿 The bridge will be covered in 5,000 native plants and sound-blocking soil
 📐 165 feet wide x 200 feet long

Construction began in 2022 and now, just one step remains: letting the vegetation grow.
Once it’s ready, it’ll help restore one of North America’s most ecologically important wildlife corridors.

San Francisco isn’t just walkable, it’s the only city in America where every single resident lives within a 10-minute walk of a public park 🌳

The city hit the milestone in 2017, becoming the first to meet the goal set by the 10-Minute Walk campaign, a nationwide initiative backed by more than 300 mayors across the U.S., including the leaders of NYC, LA, Chicago, and Houston.

Urban parks have been proven to boost physical and mental health, build community, and improve environmental outcomes.

A 10-minute walk equals about half a mile, and in San Francisco, you’re never farther than that from green space.

Could SF nightlife use a change like this?

A new California proposal, Assembly Bill 342, introduced by Assemblymember Matt Haney, would allow cities to create designated “hospitality zones” where bars and venues could serve alcohol until 4am on weekends and certain holidays.

The bill would apply statewide, but cities like San Francisco would need to opt in, define specific zones, and develop safety and policing plans before anything changes.

The proposal is aimed at boosting nightlife and helping bring activity back to downtown areas by increasing foot traffic and supporting local businesses.

It’s still under consideration in the California Legislature and must pass multiple stages before reaching the governor’s desk. If approved, it could take effect as early as June 1, 2026.

For now, it’s just a proposal, but it could significantly reshape nightlife in cities like SF.

Three domes. A pyramid. 360° visuals. Sound baths. Concerts. TEDx talks. Beer.

Yup, San Francisco is getting a Vegas Sphere-style immersive entertainment park, and it’s landing at Pier 70 as early as New Year’s Eve.

The new venue, called Elevation Sky Park, is from the team behind Wisdome LA (the same domes that hosted SZA, Steve Aoki, and fashion shows). It’s part art, part rave cave, part wellness hub.

Events will range from healing mornings to tech-house nights, with space for 200–600 people in each dome.

One dome might run IMAX-style films. Another could have a Grateful Dead cover band under full trippy visuals.

It’s like Burning Man meets The Jetsons, but in Dogpatch.

ETA: early 2026, just in time for the Super Bowl.

The USA didn’t exactly dominate this list.

San Francisco just ranked as the happiest city in the U.S. on the 2026 Happy City Index, landing at 45 globally out of 250+ cities.

It was also the only American city to even come close to the top 150.

 • San Diego came in at 155
 • San Jose at 172
 • Boston at 177

The rankings are based on 64 factors across things like quality of life, health, environment, economy, and mobility.

So yeah… SF wins the U.S. title.

But globally? Europe is still lapping everyone, with the top 5 including Copenhagen, Helsinki, Geneva, Uppsala and Tokyo.

By the way, we have a weekly newsletter with what’s worth knowing about and doing in San Francisco. One newsletter. Once a week. Link in bio.
