Some New York (and motherhood) stories never leave you.

In 1996, a stray cat later named Scarlett was living with her kittens inside an abandoned garage in Brooklyn when a fire broke out. As firefighters arrived and flames spread, Scarlett ran back into the burning building again and again, carrying each kitten out one by one.

By the time she was done, her eyes were burned shut, her ears and paws badly injured, and most of her fur singed away. Witnesses said she touched each kitten with her nose to make sure they were safe before collapsing unconscious.

Scarlett and her kittens were rushed to North Shore Animal League, where they were treated and eventually adopted. Her story spread around the world, inspiring thousands of letters and leading to the creation of the Scarlett Award for Animal Heroism.

Scarlett spent the rest of her life in Brooklyn and passed away in 2008, but her story is still one of the bravest New York has ever told.

NYC really humbled Joe Jonas this week 😂

A fan posted a viral TikTok showing him spending seven full minutes trying to parallel park in the city, and Joe jumped into the comments with the perfect line: “And I saw you watch and not help once.”

He later posted his own video joking about how the city has been treating him since, and honestly… anyone who has ever parallel parked in Manhattan deserves emotional support and a tax credit.

It’s not every day the richest people in America unite over a common cause, but this time, it’s fear.

Leaked data shows 26 billionaires have spent $22 million backing candidates opposing Zohran Mamdani, the socialist frontrunner for New York City mayor.

Donors include Bloomberg, Ackman, Gebbia, Lauder, Diller, and more, all pouring millions into groups like Fix the City to keep him out of office.

Mamdani’s platform? Rent freezes, free buses, and higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy.

His warning? “Billionaires are right to see us as an existential threat.”

In a city built by workers and run by money, this race is shaping up to test who really runs New York.

Which of these Knicks logos could replace the real thing? 🤔

Back in 1991, designer Michael Doret explored dozens of wild concepts, Empire State Building silhouettes, subway-token monograms, hand-drawn lettering experiments, all before the league landed on the cleaned-up version that debuted in 1992 and still defines the team today.

Some of these early sketches feel straight out of a different NBA timeline.

Kalshi’s billboard is turning NYC’s mayoral race into a live stock ticker.

The prediction market’s new billboard tracks real-time odds for who’ll become the city’s next mayor, with Zohran Mamdani currently holding a strong lead.

Business leaders have threatened an exodus from NYC if Mamdani wins, but his popularity has continued to surge with policies that aim to correct the cost of living and right the uneven economic playing field.

Meanwhile, Sliwa has said he’s turned down bribes to exit the race, and Cuomo is grasping on for dear life.

No matter where the @kalshi odds land, New Yorkers get the final say soon:

Harlem just made subway history.

The 110th Street-Central Park North stop on the 2/3 line has been officially renamed 110th Street–Malcolm X Plaza, planting one of the city’s most important Civil Rights icons directly onto the MTA map.

The change was timed with Harlem Week and places Malcolm X’s name right at the intersection of Central Park North and Malcolm X Blvd—just steps from the newly redesigned Harlem Meer and Davis Center.

Governor Hochul also signed legislation creating a new Harlem Renaissance Cultural District, stretching from 110th to 155th Street, recognizing the neighborhood’s lasting impact on Black culture, politics, music, and art.

It’s not just a name change. It’s a reminder, every time the train doors open.

Halloween in a puffer coat?

🧊 The Farmers’ Almanac just dropped its winter forecast and New York is in for an early, icy slap. They’re calling for:

• ❄️ First snow as early as October
• 🧊 Frigid blasts in January and February
• 🌧️ Chaotic rain-snow mashups all season
• ☃️ At least a few “decent” Atlantic snowstorms

They even used spider webs and goose migrations to predict it, so yeah, we’re listening.

Skiers might be thrilled. Midtown slush warriors? Less so.

If you’ve ever called your dog your kid, you’re officially not being dramatic.

A Brooklyn judge just ruled that a dog counts as immediate family in court and it could change everything for pet owners going forward.

On June 17, 2025, Judge Aaron Maslow made a precedent-setting decision: Duke, a dachshund tragically killed on July 4, 2023, while leashed, qualifies as immediate family under New York law.

That means Duke’s owner’s mother, Nan DeBlase, who witnessed the accident, can now sue for emotional distress, a right previously reserved for humans.

The ruling is limited: it only applies when a dog is leashed and the person is in the “zone of danger.”

But it’s historic, New York is now the first court in the U.S. to give a pet that level of legal recognition.

And yes, Duke wore a green tux in his tribute post, because he truly was a part of the family.

The ruling is limited: it only applies when a dog is leashed and the person is in the “zone of danger.” But it’s historic, New York is now the first court in the U.S. to give a pet that level of legal recognition. And yes, Duke wore a green tux in his tribute post, because he truly was a part of the family. Follow @mustdonyc for more like this! Media via @trevdeblase / Shutterstock #mustdonyc #newyorkdogs
