After decades of roadkill, California is finally giving wildlife the right of way. The Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, the largest wildlife bridge in the world, is almost complete. Built above the 10-lane Route 101 near LA, the $90M overpass will reconnect the Santa Monica Mountains and give animals like mountain lions, coyotes, and deer a safe path to cross. 💥 Over 12 mountain lions and 1 black bear were killed trying to cross the freeway 🦁 The project was inspired by the tragic death of LA’s iconic lioness, P-22 🌿 The bridge will be covered in 5,000 native plants and sound-blocking soil 📐 165 feet wide x 200 feet long Construction began in 2022 and now, just one step remains: letting the vegetation grow.
