I always loved this version of @cw_calvinwan Calvin Wan’s FD3S RX7 Turbo. After enlisting the help of @gtrchung Henry Chung at Motorsport Dynamics, Calvin put together one of my favorite FDs with automotive style that still looks good 20 years after he originally built it. 

This FD had so much presence on the street, especially with those SSR D5R wheels framed with Falken Azenis tires. What a baller - can’t believe C.Wan built a car like this in his twenties.

As Calvin drove the streets of San Francisco in the FD so I could take these photos (back in 2005 with my Canon 20D crop-sensor camera), I remember how nervous we were about getting pulled over by cops, because this fully caged competition car was definitely not legal for driving on the street. 

This car already attracts so much attention visually - but the signature wind-up of its rotary engine boosting with the Apex’i turbocharger (What a legendary sound!!!) definitely had heads turning too!

Man, I love this FD. Can’t wait to see it back on the racetrack.

If you’re involved with the drifting community, by now it’s likely that you heard the news that Alex Pfeiffer @battleversion passed away recently.

I tried to dig up some old photos of him that were different than what others have already posted up. When @cw_calvinwan @drift_historics and I met him in the SF Bay Area back in the late 90s, Pfeiffer was the first person we ever met who could actually drift his AE86 well and link turns. 

I dug up an old photo album and took a pic of old film photos of his OG red AE86 coupe that he had back then. He took us on some pretty intense ride alongs in his AE86 while hitting mountain roads in the middle of the night, wearing shorts and slippers while kicking the clutch in.

If anyone has some memories to share about Alex, please share them in the comments.

Finally installed the new @boslla C4 Chameleon LED bulbs into my AE86’s H4 headlight housings. These bulbs outperform the previous halogen H4 bulbs I had, AND they allow you to easily switch the color temperature of your headlights from 6500k (bright white) to 4300k (yellowish white) to 3000k (foglight yellow) just by turning the headlights on and off. Am I the only one who thinks Nevada license plates look SUPER UGLY?!

Whoever designed all these ugly license plates for the Nevada DMV should be transferred to a different department that does not allow creative control of any artwork or design.

The Raiders one has decent typography and colorways, but I don’t want a sports team logo on my car. 

I hate to post negative things, but damn. These plates look horrible. 

The choice of typeface on that light blue background with dark blue letters and yellow + brown + green… YUCK. And the mountain design (the artwork isn’t bad, but it could use better colors and layout) bleeding into the letters…

On a positive note, at least I’m happy that my AE86 is smog exempt now, with classic car insurance and classic rod registration. 🙏 

Individual throttle bodies, no problem! 🤩

I’m just waiting for F1 Las Vegas to make a license plate design. What are you guys waiting for, F1 Las Vegas Grand Prix?

My AE86 loves high rpm. 

When we first brought my zenki 86 from LA to Vegas, it was on a trailer. A friend installed the new engine and transmission, but I couldn’t drive my AE86 on the street because the throttle was unresponsive and it had a hard time idling. The exhaust was so loud it would make your eardrums bleed, and the headlights/instrumentation didn’t work. 

I’m super thankful to my longtime friend Ross from @garage_boso for going through the car to make it streetable.

Also huge thanks @raysfactory for taking the time to reweld the cracked pipe on my vintage discontinued 5Zigen exhaust so my titanium exhaust could be removed.

The brakes still don’t work well - they’re currently pretty sketchy. I was told the car needs a vaccuum block to make the brake booster function correctly. That’s on the to-do list! 

I’m just glad this thing is running again, and thankful to everyone who played a part in getting this car together.

It’s funny to think once upon a time, I used to drive this car to take chicks out on dates in Downtown LA and Hollywood. 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

The evolution of my Lexus IS300.  IMO, the Lexus L-Tuned aero lip wing for the USDM JCE10 IS300 looks clean and elegant, and the angled shape of the wing perfectly matches the subtle body lines of the car’s rear quarter panel. 

Authentic L-Tuned wings are rare and expensive. They are much more aggressive than the factory wing, which looks weak IMO. I really hate the factory wing design, so I think L-Tuned or TRD are the best.

The second to last slide in the carousel shows the huge ugly US market factory rear bumper, which protrudes due to North America’s 5mph crash bumper laws. I dislike the US rear bumper even more than the factory rear wing. In fact, even just changing the rear bumper to JDM SXE10 Altezza OEM style makes an IS300 look better.

The very last slide shows the Japanese SXE10 Altezza “Elegance” front bumper option with TRD front lip, and J-Blood aero grill on top. The bottom image shows the JDM Altezza Gita front lip and bumper, which doesn’t have the ugly license plate cutout in the front. JDM Altezza Gita bumpers also have different shaped fog lights.

My friends and I consider ourselves extremely lucky to have experienced car culture during the D1 Grand Prix era, where everything was new and exciting, and most car enthusiasts in the United States were just beginning to discover drifting and Japanese car culture. 

True aficionados of Japanese cars will agree… so many of us were inspired by the (now nostalgic) styling of the early 2000s drift cars in D1GP videos, Drift Tengoku, and Battle Magazine.

I’m so lucky I got to attend and shoot trackside photos of so many of these events. 🙏🥹
