Someone was reacting to a line from Never Eat Alone, and it stopped me. "Luck comes when you're looking for opportunity."

Twenty years after I wrote that book, that's still the whole idea. The doors of opportunity open through other people. That isn't luck. That's you making it happen.

So here's the work. Identify the most important people who can open doors for you. Reach out to them. Be in their company. Build communities around them. And serve them.

Do that consistently and opportunity stops looking like luck.

Networking the way I used to teach it works, but it’s exhausting and rooted in scarcity. The real shift is building a community where relationships compound and opportunities grow without constant effort.

Most people introduce themselves with "I'm the head of X with Y years experience." That's a resume read out loud. And nobody remembers it.

My father worked 12-hour shifts at the mill but struggled alone. At the country club, I saw that real security is having a tribe on speed dial. Start building your network before you're desperate.

The most powerful room in any conference isn't on the agenda — it's the one built the night before with the right people, the right anchor, and the right strategy. One yes leads to another, and before long the social proof sells itself, turning hard no's into can't-miss yes's. This is the exact playbook used to fill a Davos breakfast with CEOs of the world's biggest tech companies.

20 years after Never Eat Alone, the same 10 lessons keep finding their way back — because the fundamentals of human connection don't have a shelf life. A strong network isn't built on a resume or a title, it's built on generosity, presence, and showing up before anyone ever asks. These are the truths readers keep coming back to, and they're just as true today as they were then.

I created something called a stress test and it's one of the most powerful team tools I've ever seen.

Here's how it works: the person shares what they've achieved, where they're struggling, and where they're going next. Then the team breaks into pairs, and psychological safety goes up 85% in smaller groups versus a big room. In those pairs, they write down what you might be missing, ideas to try, and where they're willing to help.

In a room of 12, only four people typically have the courage to speak up. But in breakout pairs with a written assignment, you get 100% participation and full candor. You just turned the culture you want into a simple process people actually follow.

I don’t walk into rooms alone. Even now I bring or find a wingman because the fastest way to build real connections is to move through the room together instead of navigating it solo.

Most speakers lose the room in the first thirty seconds. Not because the information is weak, but because they lead with information at all.

My biggest mistake on stage was believing an audience wanted my data more than my heart. I gave them everything I knew and watched them drift.

Open with a personal story instead. Capture their heart with authenticity first, and they'll follow you anywhere you take the information.

Save this before your next talk.

Ask most people what makes a high performing team and they'll say trust, communication, empathy. All important, but here's what 20 years of research actually shows: the highest performing characteristic is a challenge culture.

The best teams have candor. They speak truth even when it's uncomfortable, take courageous risks with each other, call each other out, and wrestle ideas together. It's not about being nice, it's about being honest.

High performing teams have a social contract for candor and transparency. If your team can't challenge each other in the room, you're not performing at your highest level, you're just getting along.

Most doors don’t open because you knock.
They open because you showed up early, did the little things… and someone believed in you before you believed in yourself.

Your network is your net worth.

Yet most people plan everything, except the relationships that unlock opportunity.
The most successful people aren’t always the smartest or most talented.

They’re the best connected.
For 20+ years, I’ve helped leaders build relationships that create real, lasting impact.

That’s why we created Beyond Connections—an 8-week accelerator for authentic networking, trust-based growth, and meaningful community.
If you’re ready to build your network with intention, not by accident, this is your next step.

The best teams do their thinking before the meeting, not during it. Positions shared early. Concerns surfaced ahead of time. So the hour together starts at what actually matters.

Tag the person who helped you, before you had anything to show.

Some people don’t enter your life with promises.
They don’t tell you they’ll change anything.
They don’t even realise what they’re about to mean to you.

They just show up.

I met Keith Ferrazzi at a time when I didn’t have much clarity about how the professional world actually works. No strong network. No polished plan. Just curiosity, honesty, and a lot of questions.

What stayed with me wasn’t his achievements (which are incredible), but his nature.
The way he listens.
The way he notices people.
The way he helps — quietly, without making it feel transactional.

He connected me to people I had no access to.
He trusted me before I had proof.
And he helped me take my first real step in my professional life — very unexpectedly.

I still don’t know what he saw in me that day.
But I do know this:
one conversation can change your direction,
and one kind person can change your starting point.

This reel is my way of saying thank you.
Not loudly.
Just honestly.

If you’re early in your journey and feel lost — stay open.
And if you’re further ahead — be kind.
You never know whose beginning you’re shaping.

What you say about someone when they're not in the room will build your reputation faster than anything you'll ever say about yourself.

You're surrounded by people who could help you solve the thing you've been stuck on for weeks. The problem isn't ego. It's a broken social contract that's been following you since childhood.

The 5x5x5 is one tool inside a much bigger system. If you want the complete operating system for turning the people around you into real coaches and collaborators, that's Beyond Connections.

Today I turn 60. Four things I wish I’d learned sooner, and the same four I’m doubling down on this year:

1. Ask for the truth. Make it safe for people to give it to you.
2. Co-elevate. Find the most extraordinary people and build cool stuff together.
3. Love. Give it the primacy it deserves. It changes everything.
4. You’re okay already. You don’t have to be perfect to go for it.

Happy birthday to me, and happy new life to you. 🎂

The CEO of Coca-Cola walked away because he didn't feel equipped to lead through the AI revolution — most leaders are quietly feeling the same way but staying silent about it. Falling behind on AI isn't a technology problem, it's a teamship problem, and the fix is the same as it's always been: find the right people, build the right group, and hold each other accountable until you get there. Seek it, learn from someone who knows more, and build a posse that won't let you quit.

Stop trying to go it alone and join a tribe that has your back. Beyond Connection is our 9-week program designed for leaders who want to co-elevate. Link in my bio to apply!

Ten thousand connections won't do anything for you until you organize them.

Think of your network as a funnel. At the top are the broad connections from social media and everywhere else. Stay in touch with them on their terms.

Then prioritize. Out of your hundred or your thousand contacts, who are the ten, the twenty, the thirty who matter most? Rank them A, B, and C.

Now set a pinging strategy, a set frequency for how often you reach out to each tier. Everyone gets treated differently so your outreach stays manageable.

Save this if your contacts feel unmanageable.
