DOB inspectors and engineers will remain on site to monitor the progress of work and continue their investigation into the structural failure." Formerly the headquarters of pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the building at 235 East 42nd Street had been undergoing renovation work to convert it from office space to more than 1,600 high-end apartments — including the addition of four new floors and the extension of several other levels. Fire crews were called to reports of falling masonry at the site on Tuesday morning local time. A 'frozen-zone' was established from 40th to 45th Streets and from First to Third Avenues, which saw the area closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic and buildings evacuated. Difficult day unpacking the dark and complex history of Berlin's abandoned Tempelhof Airport. Built by the Nazi Party in the 1930s and designed to intimidate, this vast structure is some 1.2-kilometres long and features over 7,000 rooms, including huge hangars and chilling deep underground bunkers used for processing aerial reconnaissance photographs. From witnessing the darkest chapter of human history to its role in the Cold War, and its airfield's modern status as the world's largest inner city park — this building records so many chapters of Berlin's history. I'll be frank: this was a challenging shoot. At times I felt sadness, at other times anger, but quite often I felt disgust - especially in some of the bunker areas. Most of those spaces remain unaltered from 1945 and I felt a weight on my chest from the moment I stepped into them. Built by the Nazi Party in the 1930s and designed to intimidate, this vast structure is some 1.2-kilometres long and features over 7,000 rooms, including huge hangars and chilling deep underground bunkers used for processing aerial reconnaissance photographs. From witnessing the darkest chapter of human history to its role in the Cold War, and its airfield's modern status as the world's largest inner city park — this building records so many chapters of Berlin's history. I'll be frank: this was a challenging shoot. At times I felt sadness, at other times anger, but quite often I felt disgust - especially in some of the bunker areas.
