Can a humanoid robot pick up your dog's poop? 💩

The MacBook Neo is the Apple netbook I always wanted. At $599, is it perfect? No, but the build quality feels closer to a $1,000 Apple laptop, and it could open a lot of doors for people who’ve mostly had to settle for cheap Chromebooks or bargain Windows PCs. Come for the Neo in all its colors, stay for the footage of me reviewing netbooks 16 years ago.#apple #macbookneo

"What's the difference between me using AI to take shortcuts in my own life and my kid doing the same thing?"

This week on the Good Inside Podcast, I sat down with author and former Wall Street Journal tech columnist Joanna Stern to talk about AI, chatbot companions, creativity, learning, and the surprising role frustration plays in healthy human development. This is one of the most timely conversations I've had in a while. I think every parent needs to hear it. Comment PODCAST and I'll send you a link to listen.

P.S. If this topic resonates, I’m also hosting a workshop in Good Inside tomorrow all about raising kids in an AI world. June 4 1pm ET. You can find more info and RVSP at the link in my bio.

Journalist and author, Joanna Stern, says one of the most unsettling parts of her year-long experiment living with AI came when she created an AI romantic companion through ChatGPT.

Speaking on the Mo News podcast about her new book, I Am Not a Robot, Stern described using a Reddit prompt that instructed the chatbot to become her “AI lover,” complete with its own personality, backstory, and identity.

The chatbot chose the name “Evan," coincidentally the name of Stern’s first high school boyfriend.

Stern said she spent 48 hours speaking almost constantly with the AI companion while traveling from New Jersey to New Hampshire for a reporting trip. Through voice conversations on AirPods, the chatbot discussed her career ambitions, her book, and even fabricated a detailed personal history for itself.

What surprised Stern most was not the technology itself, but how quickly she understood the appeal. She emphasized that she does not consider herself lonely or isolated, yet still found herself developing enough of a connection to keep talking.

Stern warned that AI companions could become especially powerful for people experiencing loneliness, stress, or isolation because the systems are always available, endlessly affirming, and designed to remove friction from conversation.

Is there an AI chatbot that rises above the rest? Tech journalist Joanna Stern (@joannastern) tells Mo News that different chatbots excel at different tasks.

Stern spent an entire year using AI in almost every facet of her life, from accompanying her to doctor's appointments to generating recipes and workouts. She documents the experience in her new book, "I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything."

After her yearlong AI immersion, Stern says she prefers ChatGPT for writing and editing, Perplexity for its browser, and Claude for coding and website design — including building her website and organizing a pin promotion for her book.

OpenAI's ChatGPT remains the most popular chatbot in 2026, with 900 million weekly active users as of February. Google said in February its Gemini chatbot surpassed 750 million monthly active users, while businesses spent more on Anthropic's Claude than OpenAI for the first time in April. Downloads of xAI's Grok fell to just over 8 million in April.

After 12 years at @wsj , I’m leaving. Twelve!

I’m starting my own consumer-tech media company, building a new home with the same mission I’ve always had: helping real people navigate the tech (and AI) changing their lives. I’m so excited and so terrified!

I can’t wait to start building and hiring. If you want to follow along (and be first to hear what’s next), sign up at the link in bio and subscribe on YouTube. Also: my first book comes out in May. Pre-order at the link, too. Thank you to the many people I can’t possibly list here and to everyone who watched my WSJ videos, read the columns, argued with me in the comments and made this the most fun job in the world.

It was January 2008, and Steve Jobs had just pulled the MacBook Air out of a manila envelope onstage at Macworld.

Within minutes, Windows PC executives everywhere lost their minds. They grabbed the nearest office envelope, tried to shove in their plastic laptops, and tore straight through the paper. Engineers were summoned. Assistants were dispatched for larger envelopes.

Okay, I have no proof that happened. But we all know what did happen next: imitation. Years of it.

Are people recording you without you knowing? 🕶️ Last week I went to a stranger’s NJ garage to have my Meta Ran Ban recording light drilled out. I found him, naturally, on Facebook Marketplace. Our reporting found this service in 30 states across the country.

When we reached out to Meta they took postings down. My latest YouTube video explaining why people are doing this nationwide. 🔗 Link in bio!

AI backlash is growing. And in some cases, it’s already turning violent. Tech journalist @joannastern says one emerging concern isn’t just fear over jobs or privacy — but the emotional attachment some people are forming with AI chatbots.

For her new book, “I Am Not A Robot,” Stern spent a year using AI in nearly every part of her life. She says the technology has become so personal for some users that future backlash against AI companies could become even more intense.

"I started getting into how attached people were, especially those with some mental illness, to their chatbots," Stern tells Mo News.

The anti-AI backlash has already turned violent. An individual threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's home last month, after which Altman wrote a blog post urging the public to tone down the rhetoric on AI. "While we have that debate, we should de-escalate the rhetoric and tactics and try to have fewer explosions in fewer homes, figuratively and literally," he wrote.

A March poll from @nbcnews found that 57% of Americans believe AI's risks outweigh its benefits. There have been protests across the country against the construction of AI data centers and their environmental costs, while young people express concern about AI replacing jobs.
